The cumin lamb was a highlight, super tender and the spices tingled the right amount in my mouth. The mung bean noodles were very refreshing, while the braised lamb shoulder was also super tender, you can taste how much effort and time was put in cooking it. They let me wait for a long time before taking the order. When I asked a question, the young waiter showed inpatient and he was rude. My question was helped by a costumer. The ambiance is crapping and uninspiring. At the bill time, a waitress showed me the bill on an iPad, and she expected me to tip 20%. She got really mad when I tipped 16%. There are few dishes that ward off the winter cold as well as "big pan chicken", "da pan ji", or "Monstrous Plate Chicken" as Dun Huang calls it. Skinless chicken thighs are stewed with plenty of sweet, warm spices (star anise, cinnamon), dark soy sauce, red chilis, and potato. The resulting soupy, spicy, hearty dish warms you from the inside out. Ordinarily, the dish comes with thick wheat noodles; Dun Huang didn't send any with our order so be aware that you have to purchase separately! The version here was solid: chicken thighs remained tender and juicy. Although there was an appropriate amount of heat, it derived completely from the red chilis; I didn't detect any mala from peppercorns at all, sadly. It was too salty to eat alone, so I cut it with some rice we had on hand. Another main course of "Sliced Fish or Beef" ($20.00) was also disappointingly mala-free, but otherwise fair. There was plenty of sliced fish in my version (my protein of choice), but without the infusion of mala heat, I wasn't really feeling the copious amounts of red chili oil that was used to dress the dish. (All that oil is wholly authentic, by the way, used like a tadka in Indian cuisine, to "finish" a dish.) I liked that the dish was not even the slightest bit "fishy," but it was so oily and salty that my favorite part was actually the cabbage and mung bean sprouts for their palliative effect. This dish something you'll want to eat in moderation with a LOT of rice -- which you need to purchase separately. The Pint of Beef Broth ($3.00) was dark, warmly spiced, and somehow still hot despite the delivery distance. It was (like everything we tried) too salty, but the salinity was easily remedied with a bit of boiling water. As someone who always loves the broth better than any other part of a soup, this pint of straight-up broth was gold. A Woodear Mushroom Salad ($8.00) was nicely dressed with vinegar and red chili pepper, and the woodear mushrooms retained a pleasant bite, but they were of course too salty. A final side dish of Marinated Braised Beef Shank ($9.00) was lusciously tender and fragrant. More fat was sliced into the dish than what many home chefs would include, but that (and the oversaltiness) were the only flaws there. Overall we enjoyed this lovely meal and the pleasant staff on the phone when I called. And we have a heckuva lot of leftovers to contend with. Tomorrow, I think I'll boil some noodles, add the leftover broth and beef shank, and pretend like I made dinner. read more

The broth in the extra bowl of noodles ($3) was too salty, and didn't match the bowl it was accompanying. They overdid it a bit on the ma-la flavoring as well. Additionally, their prices are very odd. Grilled fish for $38 when a bowl of Lanzhou noodles is $9? A plate of cabbage and black bean for $13 when a side dish of cabbage is $5? The wait staff could use some training as well. They kept bringing more dishes out and squeezing them on to our overfull table rather than cleaning up our old empty dishes to make room for the new dishes. They also forgot to put in our order for Lamb Rice Pilaf. All this is definitely forgivable but it just made me realize that this type of experience does not warrant five stars. So this location was open about a month ago and so far it's the first branch I been to(apparently they have 3), I was pretty hungry so I got 4 apps and 2 main courses to try the best out of it with my maximum stomach capacity. All my apps were great,thumbs up for the fish rolls(cigarettes size)and eggplant salad ,they were all in proper portion(not too much,not too less) so it's a really a good way to start,I would recommend 2apps for an adult. I had the cumin lamb it was" okay"nothing surprising meat was deep fried and the cumin seasoning,just be aware that it doesn't come with rice so you need to do the extra order. The Lanzhou ramen I do recommend, it's like a bowl of brisket pho soup with ramen noodles instead of the rice noodles,and you can choose the size of noodles you like, the traditional is the regular size though! Service was great, they checked the tables once in a while and my water glass was never empty even though I drank lots of water(the food was spicy)! I came here after class with a friend and we shared four dishes (I came to taste he came to eat) we tried three Cold noodle dishes: spicy noodle, orange noodle and one simply called cold noodle, and the traditional noodle dish. Of the four dishes, I'd come many times just for the traditional noodle dish. It makes the other dishes forgettable. The spicy noodle and cold noodle were both spicy and cold - both were good but the spicy noodle was pretty salty. The orange noodle tasted similar to mayonnaise mixed with candied orange peel. Wasn't something I was used to but I'd eat it again. Service was quick, and the size of the restaurant is deceiving by the narrow entrance. There's a larger seating area down the hall. When I was in China, I always go to the grilled fish restaurants. It is good to have that similar flavor here in NYC. It is really tasty! If I must complain something, it can only be that the fish is smaller than the one back home but the price is more expensive(you can get double with the same price in China). Don't forget to ask for rice. They go really well with the sauce from the grilled fish. We got the spicy flavor but as a person who can never handle spicy food, I would say it is not spicy at all. We also got Coca Cola chicken and Bok Choy for the sake of our health :) First time trying coke chicken using breasts instead of wings. They are sweeter than the normal coke chicken I got before. We came here on a Thursday night and were asked if we'd mind sitting in one of the shared tables by the entrance. I responded "no," but upon going to the restroom, I saw there were plenty of tables for 2 available. So that was weird. Although the shared table was fine, our seats were right next to the beverage refrigerator. So every time it was opened, the light shined in our faces like an alien spaceship about to land and abduct us in some cornfield. The other odd thing was that after we placed our entree orders, the waitress asked us "what rice do you want?" Had we known we'd be charged for it, we wouldn't had gotten it. For the entrees, we ordered the Spicy Popcorn Chicken and the Spicy Crispy Eggplant. Both were fried perfectly but both were too salty. I downed my entire glass of water and it still wasn't enough to slake my thirst. Nor did any server come back to refill it. So service post order is non-existent. Came here on a rainy night and the restaurant was busy. Many of the items on the menu looked spicy and we don't have a high tolerance with spice so we both ordered the Lanzhou Noodle and had the eggplant appetizer. My boyfriend got the thin noodles for his Lanzhou beef noodle and I wish I did the same thing instead of getting the thick noodles. The thick noodles were very hard to chew and were all different shapes. The thin noodles were softer and the texture was overall a lot better. There was only two pieces of beef in the soup. I was not surprise because it was about $8 for a bowl. The eggplant was tasty, but like some other yelpers have mentioned it was too salty on the bottom. It was very garlicy though which I really like. If you cannot get down to Chinatown I do recommend coming here for beef noodles, however it cannot beat Chinatown of Flushing's beef noodles. Ask for chili oil on the side, would definitely recommenced adding it to the broth if you like a kick of spice. For dessert we got the crispy glue pudding. Yummy, although I was surprised to find they're basically tang yuan (aka fried sesame balls) and there are only 6 of them. You can choose your noodle type: thin, regular, thick, wide, extra wide.
