From the folk music, to the eclectic art on the walls, to the overall warm and inviting atmosphere, Dun-Well Doughnuts felt immediately like home. Prior to my visit, I had just eaten lunch so I wasn't in the mood for a doughnut, although I really wish I had. They all were totally drool-worthy, especially the lime and cinnamon sugar. After looking over the menu and chatting up the blue-haired barista, I opted for an iced pumpkin spice. Keep in mind, this place is vegan friendly, so they only offer soy and almond milk as an option! After being recommended this place by 4+ people, I decided to check out the vegan doughnut hype. Food: I was really pleased by the large selection of all vegan donuts that they have. I love variety, so the daily-changing menu makes me happy. No flavors seemed to be in short supply - so no worry about your favorite flavor selling out quick. I ordered a half dozen: French toast, pb&jam filled, coffee vanilla, powdered jelly filled, mango vanilla, and cinnamon sugar. French toast and pb&jam were clear winners and must trys. Coffee vanilla lacked flavor and mango vanilla just didn't work as a donut flavor. Overall, they were tasty, but went stale by the second day. These do not hold well so only get what you intend to eat while fresh. Price: Decent prices ($14 for 6 donuts). Some places overly price just because they're "artisanal" and "vegan" so I appreciate the normal, decent prices at dun-well. Interior: The location is very SMALL! Don't plan to stay - grab and go. I went inside with my boyfriend. We decided to sit and stay to keep out of the cold weather, but as soon as a family walked in, it was way overly crowded and uncomfortable. We left immediately. Service: The servers were very willing to help me choose flavors and show us attention. They were nice. Overall, these taste like regular donuts even though they are vegan; you won't know the difference. But they're just ok donuts. i originally came here just because i heard that they sold good doughnuts. i literally had no idea that all their doughnuts were vegan until now! i ordered in store a little before midday, and they were already sold out of some flavors. they post their flavors everyday on their instagram story, but some flavors change on rotation. i paid with card, but i'm unsure if they accept cash. they also don't have any outdoor seating set up. you can also get them through delivery on ubereats and postmates, but only if you're planning on buying a half dozen or a dozen. i enjoyed my experience here, and all of their doughnut flavors sounded so good! the only downside was the the employee there didn't seem to be in the mood to answer my questions, when i asked about if she had any recommendations. they're similar in size to krispy kreme doughnuts, in my opinion. i love how these doughnuts don't make you feel super heavy after eating them. but, you might find yourself eating a lot in one sitting, since they're really light and pretty small. since this place is so affordable, i'll be rating the flavors below based on mostly taste. if i factored in price, the individual ratings would probably be higher for each one. 11/27/20 -cinnamon sugar doughnut: this is available almost everyday from what i know, but you should probably still check their instagram story in advance just in case. i'm an avid lover for cinnamon, so i was excited to try this out. needless to say, i was pretty happy with it! the doughnut was soft, not too sugary, and enjoyable to eat. it was only $2.50, and i couldn't really find anything to critique about it. (3.5/5) -pistachio yoda doughnut with coconut flakes: the pistachio flavor of the glaze wasn't strong enough in my opinion. even though this was a specialty flavor at the time, it didn't stand out to me as anything new. i still liked the consistent texture of the pillowy dough, and it had just the right amount of sweetness. it was a bit more expensive at $3.50 and a bit larger in size than the others; i probably would've been fine if i never got to try it out. (3.5/5) -maple french toast doughnut: i'm unsure if this is only available during the fall season, but i was glad that i tried it out! i had high hopes for this, and i wasn't disappointed. i expected this to be on the sweet side, but the maple flavor was pretty subtle. but, i do think that this doughnut could've used more cinnamon. but, it had an overall satisfying bite with the crunchy maple glaze outside and the fluffy dough inside. for only $2.50, this was definitely worth it! (4/5) -peanut butter and jelly doughnut: this had a delicious peanut butter glaze! i do wish that there was more pb&j filling, though. although i've had better pb&j doughnuts from other places, none of them come close to this one in terms of price. it only costed $2.75, and i found myself enjoying it a lot. while it was on the sweeter side, i really have nothing to complain about. I came here on a Sunday before meeting up my friend for dinner and drinks. I looked up the place before I went there and saw how cutely decorated it was in the video with the owners. I was a bit disappointed to see that the place didn't look as new or clean. I got there around 5 and there weren't too many flavors left which is understandable as it was closing in a couple of hours. Still, there was a steady influx of customers coming into the store. I ended up ordering the PB&J donut (creamy kind) and was so excited to get a log plate, as seen in pictures, but was handed a blue plate. I later got a log plate. I also ordered the horchata iced latte. The donut itself was pretty standard and it didn't taste like it was vegan. There were a large variety of flavors and I ended up choosing the glazed lemon poppyseed doughnut and let me tell you , IT WAS AMAZING. We went here after having breakfast at Champs diner, around the corner. We recognized other people from the diner here as well. Like minds... The service was distant. This place couldn't possibly be more hipster BUT I thought the place was lovely none the less. Walking inside Dun-Well Doughnut (mostly a coffee shop) transports you to the early 1900s between the old music, styling, and dark woods. Countering the dark woods is a wall of windows bathing the shop in light. It's really a welcoming atmosphere. The friendly service was also a nice change of pace. If only the prices were from back in the day I'd be much happier. Their regular donuts are $2.50 while the filled ones are $2.75 and the smaller cake donuts (drop donuts) are $1.25. Techinically they're all vegan and organic but you can't tell they're anything different then a regular donut. They had about a dozen types of donuts when I was there, I'm fairly sure many of the flavors rotate with the season. Of the 12 types, 2 were filled (regular jelly and pb&j), 1 was a cake donut (banana bread with a maple glaze), and the rest were raised yeast donuts. I had the banana bread and a elvis (peanut butter and banana). The Elvis would have been better with what the king loves, bacon. But being a vegan shop that wasn't going to happen. I've been vegan for over a year and a half, and I don't like doughnuts. For the most part, they are way too sweet for me, and I always get the worst stomachache from all the sugar and glaze and frosting. But, since going vegan, I've been giving certain foods a new try. Dun-well has been on my list for a while, so I decided to stop by. I had the vanilla pistachio mini and an apple cider peach. I loved the flaky airyness of the doughnuts. But, yeah, SOOO sweet. But then I got a doughnut, so what could I expect? The vanilla pistachio was alright. I was expecting more of a pistachio flavor than the sprinkled nuts on the top, but it disappointed me. The apple cider beach was much better because there were peaches in the middle! Staff was really nice and patient. There were a good amount of people in the place but no wait for the line. They also have coffee and ice cream (some black coffee would've paired wonderfully with the doughnuts). Location: the only way for people who don't have a car to get there is by taking the L train. I got off at Mentrose ave and felt a completely different vibe from Brooklyn. I felt their sun is much warmer compared to Manhattan's. Their neighborhoods are more interracial than Manhattan's. And of course, it's more relaxing here than in Manhattan. Dun-well is right by the subway station entrance/exit. The store is very ... creepy. My stereotype of a vegan place is built by someone who is female, late 20s and will pay attention to making their store look cute. But this is not the case here in Dun-well. No decoration all things are wood-based. A little bit disorganized. So I questioned myself: are their donuts gonna be good? Food: yeah, my worrisome seems to be redundant. It's good. It is of course the best vegan donut but it could be top 3 if we are only competing based on the way they make their yeast. I love the chewiness of their dough. First bite will be followed by second bite and when you got to the last bite, you will regret how fast you finish this donut and turn to buy another one. YEAH, THEY ARE GOOD. Dun not so well. Glazed flavors = fun inventiveness, donut based = just a'ight. Compared to other donut shops, the donuts here are fine- good consistently but have too much sugary glaze. The donut itself is nothing special - soft and savory but not as good as 7th aves yeast donuts which are even softer and lighter which we had earlier today on a donut crawl. The savory comes from an herbal essence that permeates the dough but is overshadowed by the thick flakey glaze that gets everywhere. I like the inventive flavors but they need some classics. I've probably gained 5lbs of doughnut weight. Fat and happy? Sounds about right. Cursed (blessed?) with a crazy sweet tooth, safe to say, I was probably searching for something sweet in the hood. After a week of drooling over the computer keys, browser history dominated by their website, doughnut dreams, I was brimming with anticipation. From the get go, what appealed to me, is that they rotate flavors every week. Tradition can do no wrong, your classic glazed or chocolate glazed, but I love that they have unique flavors, constantly workin on the science of tasty doughnut deliciousness. Christopher and Dan and are like doughnut scientists. Better yet, artists. I can't wait to see what the newest concoctions are behind that glass. I make it a point to try a new flavor every time I stop by. From Guava, to Root Beer (HOLLA), to Black Walnut, I've had at least 15 different doughnuts since the beginning of this love affair some three months ago. Yes...FIFTEEN. I have mixed feelings about how this sounds. My favorite was the Lemon Poppy Seed, wasn't a fan of the PB&J, but I am all about the "drop" doughnuts, specifically, the almond drop. All are light, fluffy. they are the bomb diggity yall. I usually get em to go (nothing to do with the fact that I've almost always gotten two, and Id like to keep up the illusion that I'm getting one for someone else and not secretly devouring both in my apartment; I also feel less shame when I get a regular sized and a drop since it's roughly half the size--it's like a little side kick!) but I have stayed in the shop a few times. Never overly crowded, always a place to sit. I usually people watch from the barstools. Hot or ice, the coffee is a good bet to accompany your tasty treat. I'm a fan of the milk selections and go for the almond. Hailing from Texas, Shipley's was the thing. It's been awhile since I've had one from there, but I'm sure if we did a taste test, I'm picking Dun-Well. Never a doughnut lover, I AM in fact madly in love with Dun-Well. Oh, and theyre vegan. Wow - didn't realize vegan donuts exist but then again - why wouldn't they? Tried three different donuts: chocolate dipped, pink lady and peanut butter and jelly. The chocolate dipped was good but I think I was able to taste done sort of wine (not sure if it was part of yeast raising process). The pink lady is cake based which was yummy but a little too sweet. I have been to this place twice recently. Doughnuts were all right, but not extraordinary in anyway in my opinion. They have a big selection, but really just all the same kinds of doughnuts with different glazes, which I don't get that excited about. I would have liked to see an apple fritter, maybe some more cake doughnuts, a crueller, etc. Staff was nice and the place is comfortable, but I would have trouble recommending this as a destination, or even a must-try if you were in the neighborhood. Believe the hype, Dun-Well is amazing! It's now almost a tradition for my family to have Dun-Well doughnuts for special occasions. We even served them at our wedding, and they were a huge hit. They're constantly upping their game, putting out new, amazing flavors all the time, especially during holidays. My all time flavor is chocolate cherry pie. They don't serve it that often but you can special order a dozen. You can pretty much special order a dozen of any flavor you like. You can't go wrong with any donut that has chocolate or peanut butter icing. They're incredible. They serve local vegan ice cream from Klein's. You can even get a donut sundae. It's best to go earlier in the day, when they have the largest selection of flavors because they often sell out. I walked in and there was no one there and it took a few minutes for someone to come out but we got two donuts, the maple glazed and raspberry jelly. We also got an iced tea ($1.75) and a lavender lemonade ($3.00) because i saw it had good reviews. OMG, the lavender lemonade is so amazing. It doesnt leave that tart lemonade taste but its also not SUPER sweet which is the issue i usually have with lemonade. Highly suggest it! The donuts were sooo yummy. Definitely not a let down. The iced tea tasted kinda like tap water (im assuming from the ice cubes) so dont suggest it. ------------- Got a toasted coconut donut and an iced matcha latte. The donut was great, soft yet a bit crunchy. The guy made my drink super quick considering it seemed like he was the only one working. The reason I took off one star was because the matcha latte had major chunks of matcha powder. It gets kind of hard to mix it up when you add it to a cold drink so you're supposed to break it up pretty well before you add the milk and ice. I guess he didnt so it was more like a cup of milk with matcha chunks at the bottom. I love how they replicate regular milky/buttery donuts but the best part of theirs is that it's 100% cruelty free & vegan. The price for each dessert is very affordable.
