I came to Galena for labor day weekend. You can substitute any burger with chicken filet, turkey and vegy burger, which is great for those who doesn't want to eat red meat. Also they have good varity of fish melt and plate options, well more than most place anyway. We started with CHEESE CURDS. There were basic fried mozarella balls. They were good but not as cheese curds. I had the TOMBSTONE BURGER with chicken filet no bacon. It was amazeballs. It was huge and juicy and slightly sweet taste. My hubby had MUSHROOM SWISS BURGER with chicken filet. His was good too(I tried his) it was more neutral(not sweet or spicy). Mine was better! Service was good. They were pretty quick. We stopped in this place because of the good reviews and also because they were one of the few places open past 7 on a week night this time of year. The place was fairly empty we were seated quickly and our server came over to get our drink orders. My wife had a long island iced tea and I had a mudslide boozy shake. Kudos to our server who offered us water with our drinks (most places make you ask). We ordered the cheese curds as an appetizer. They came with a homemade ranch for dipping. Being this close to Wisconsin the curds were decent. The food was good I had the Ruben and my wife had the chilli dog. Both my wife and I agreed the food was good. Wondering if anyone else has been asked by the manager of this restaurant to leave their table so another group can use the table at this restaurant? On Friday, September 23rd, 6 of us were eating dinner & only seated 1 hr 10mins! We were asked to leave so another group sitting at the bar could use be our table & sit together. But, there were 2 tables next to us that could have been pushed together to seat 8!! Absolutely no reason for this! My wife went with her girlfriends after I paid for them to eat on a $50 tab to go, drinks included. She opted out of of tipping on a card once they saw the restaurant was empty enough to comfortably eat there. We enjoyed a weekend in Galena and we recommended to eat here. Oh my yum! So good the kids wanted to go two times! The Shut The Front Door burger was a hit for my teen boys. Service was great. Never have I ever seen or eaten something so dang big and tasty before in my life. They had so many burgers to choose from I couldn't decide, so I went with a chili dog. Im glad I did... it was packed with flavor til the last bite. They could have left the cheese melt on top for another.minute in the broiler. My wife and I enjoyed our visit here. We watched all the other huge crafty burgers come out of the kitchen. Im not sure if we could have finished one of those, but now we know next time to come hungry. Lots of funny photo opportunities here for the family. This is a place that the children will love. I would highly recommend this place to families that have children. The place is cute. Location is terrific. Food was OK, but service really lacked. We waited about 20 minutes for the bartender to come back from re-stocking the bar to give us our tab. You have to be bold when you're a restaurant that has toilets sitting in the entrance. When you are downtown Galena, you probably are sampling food, shopping and drinking wine and beer. If that is the case, as it was with me, you might not want to over stuff yourself with food from a restaurant. What my wife and I did was ordered the show stopping Woo! Wop! The Bam!, and split that beast. We also had one of their boozy shakes and split that as well. Splitting the items between the two of us gave us more than enough food and allowed us to enjoy the eccentrically large burger and indulgent shake while not feeling too bad about ourselves. The service here was great, and the food came out super fast. Durty Gurt's is a great place to have a nice meal while enjoying the beautiful downtown Galena area. My husband and I are here on our visit to Galena. He got the diner burger with fries. I got the Santa Fe burger with substitute veggie burger plus sweet potato fries. We also got cheese curds. The place itself is super cute and very appealing. We went for lunch and there was a 30 min. wait, which was fine. The curds were good though over priced at $8 (for the amount we got). My husband likes his burger but didn't love it. A little underdone for his taste. The fries were just fair. I liked my veggie burger but my sweet potato fries were disappointing. Limp and rather tasteless. He also got the Butterscotch Betty booze shake, which he liked a lot. I got the Elvis malt, which I liked a whole heck of a lot too. It was delicious. So we originally had planned to go to fried green tomatoes on Saturday night but the majority of our party decided they wanted burgers, so I yelled and found this place. This place was very well reviewed so it had to be good and we had a great time here. The place is casual but it wasn't too loud where our party of 8 sat in the back. We ordered onion rings to start because we were all starving and who doesn't like onion rings? And these were pretty epic and I would definitely get those here. We ordered a bunch of different burgers but I went with the classic cheeseburger and it was definitely very tasty. They don't ask you how you like it prepared here, but they do a good job of making it taste just right. Oh and it's big so definitely enough to share. We also got their sweet potato fries which were waffle fries so two stars for that! Yay, they were some of the best I ever had. They didn't have honey mustard but they did have this amazingly insane chipotle mayo which was delicious. It was so good I asked for a few more for the table, 4 more to be exact. So overall at this point everything is great. Then we get the bill and I see 5 charges of .75 and I'm like what's that? The server is like "oh that's for the sauces" Really? Would you also have charged me had I asked for simple ketchup. I don't mind paying but the server should have told us a heads up that each dressing is extra as I didn't see that anywhere on the menu. The sandwich is made with just enough mayo to hold the albacore tuna together. For $1.50 cheesy bacon fries can be substituted. When McDonald's had these last year I found them addicting. Then there are Gurty's! Real pieces of smoky bacon. Not cheesy sauce but real cheese melted over the fries. Been awhile since I've had a shake. Oh, my. The highlight of my meal at Durty Gurt's was watching my toddler eat, nay - shovel, applesauce like a machine. I'm sure Durty Gurt's applesauce is nothing out of the ordinary, but according to my daughter it was sent from the gods. Beyond the bucket of applesauce that my kid consumed (along with half of her kid's burger), husband and I enjoyed the swift service we received here. It's a pretty casual locale - friendly for bikers and kids alike. We started out with the cheese curds - $6.99 for a medium size basket of plain curds. And by plain I mean plain. They didn't have much flavor and they don't come with any sauce, thus we ordered some ranch to spice it up a bit. As for my meal, I went with the San Francisco melt sandwich - grilled chicken, bacon, melted swiss, grilled onions and Southwest sauce on grilled sourdough bread. My meal was sizable but like the curds, I wasn't bowled over by flavor in the sandwich or the sweet potato fries that accompanied it. It was certainly enough to fill the void, but no noteworthy tastes. Kitschy motif but we had a good time laughing at the quotes on the wall and funny photos. I also loved the old school TV upfront and enjoyed the cashier's story of being a young girl when that TV was brand new. The turkey burger on special turned out to be one of the best turkey burgers i've ever had (seriously). It was topped with stuffing, cranberry mayo and came with sweet potato fries. So good! Like Thanksgiving on a bun. The waitress was nice, nothing spectacular but she got the job done. Prices were reasonable and I loved my food so i'm a happy camper. Great decor in the restaurant and it was a fun Halloween weekend to come into this place. All the staff were in costume and service is very friendly. It's a great burger joint and I enjoyed the Chicago Paddy Melt with just enough cheese with grilled onions served with my choice of seasoned fries. I also got a taste of my friend's Tombstone burger which was super duper big with great thick onion rings which I loved and the barbecue sauce did not over power the hamburger and bacon! In the mood for a good burger, we were both salivating over the many options on their menu. As much as it pained my democrat heart, I ordered the Sarah Palin Burger. Hey -- it had what I wanted on it. When it arrived, it was piled very higher than I could ever imagine being able to bite into. I had to pick it apart to find a way to eat it. And after only a bite or two, the sauce on the burger was soaking everything -- in a bad way. I ended up having to ask for an extra plate to sacrifice some of the contents of my burger so that I could eat anything. Honestly, it took away from the dish and I didn't enjoy it as much as I could have, had it been a bit less sloppy. Our service was decent. The place is really clean and well maintained -- however, I did feel they were almost trying too hard with the themey mural paintings everywhere. It is like they are just waiting for someone to walk in and say "hey, let's make this a chain restaurant" And while some may find humor in the image of Gurty's toothless, smushed face everywhere, I found it unappetizing. read more
