Our large party of 19 recently had lunch here and it was a good spot for a burger and shake. Twelve 13 year old baseball players and 7 dads were seated quickly and drinks and food came out right away. I had a blue moon burger, which was a big half pounder with blue cheese crumbles, bacon, portabella mushrooms on a pretzel roll. Cheese curds were good as was the cup of gumbo I had to start. Nothing fancy here but if you want a morning after type of burger/bar food, this is your place. read more

Yum! This place was so delicious! I was visiting Galena with a friend this past weekend and she recommended that we eat here for a late lunch. I was not disappointed at all! I went with the Hawaii 5-0 burger, no tomato, no bun, and subbed the fries for a side salad. I am doing low-carb, so it was nice that I could sub the fries for the salad. It didn't say that on the menu, but our server let us know. The burger was EXCELLENT! So yummy! The grilled pineapple was my favorite part. I had asked if the bun could be swapped for a lettuce wrap and the poor server looked at me like I was a martian. He had to ask the kitchen if it was an option and ultimately I was told no. No biggie, I just used a fork, but I did think it was silly as I am certain they had lettuce in the kitchen that was not yet chopped. Just not their thing, I guess. Not bad. The boozy shakes were excellent and so were the fries. My husband loved his burger but I felt the patty itself had little flavor and all the flavor came from the toppings. Inside is full of crazy sayings and weird decor. Our server was very friendly. I didn't find the prices out of line like some other reviews I have read. The portions were huge and I gladly would have split lunch with my husband but he was too hungry. :) In summary, I'd go back if my husband wanted to but it's not a "must-go" place for me in Galena. read more

The four star rating is misleading!! From the service, drinks, to the food - bland and boring. Server treated us like we crapped on her pillow. Not sure how you can make a Bloody Mary taste bad but they managed. The "nachos" did not come out as described on menu. They were chips, with a blob on chili, and melted cheese so over melted it was like plastic. The menu didn't even mention a chili on the nachos. Zero queso, tomatoes, avocado as described. On our last trip to Galena, we finally were able to give Durty Gurt's a try! We walked in around lunchtime and were the only people in the joint and were promptly seated. The menu is enticing which makes it hard to choose! My wife and I both had burgers and they were cooked perfectly and were pretty good. The service was prompt and attentive, which you expect when the restaurant is empty, but still is worth mentioning. All in all a decent lunch and a decent burger. Came here after we were ignored for ten minutes at Galena Brewery. That said, obviously this was not on my list of preferred options from the get go, so I wasn't expecting much as it's not my typical taste- we just needed somewhere to go after our initial plan failed. What we got was good service in a no frills atmosphere, and a decent veggie burger that was for the most part decently priced. Most burger places fail at veggie burgers so that was impressive. Really solid casual eatery. We were there on a quiet afternoon which in some places means the kitchen is not up and running at full blast. Not here: all our food was fresh, hot, and clearly just prepared. There's a nice variety of original sandwiches and burgers and the atmosphere is quirky and lighthearted. We had a "Galena Tuna Melt" and a Shrimp Po Boy. Both were tasty. Good size shrimp with a mango mayo was good, though could have had a bit more flavor. AMBIANCE: Silly and sarcastic decor. I love the toilets in the waiting area - to sit on if there is a wait. Nice touch! Meh. Family atmosphere that happens to have a bar. Do yourself a favor and don't sit anywhere near the mixers for their shakes. Good gravy, you couldn't hear yourself think. The noise was very loud, and just created an annoying and uncomfortable experience. Not the best way to start our lunch. Maybe you need to stick with the burgers here, I don't know. Our orders of potstickers for an appetizer were weird. If am eating a dumpling, I want to feel the soft pillowiness of the dough. I'm not sure how these were prepared, either baked or fried, but the entire thing was crunchy. The dipping sauce was very sweet, no hint of soy, rice vinegar, ginger or sesame oil. Thank goodness we decided to split the Italian Beef, as the serving size was large. I had high hopes when I saw the generous portion of thinly sliced meat, but all of that disintegrated after my first bite. The bread could not handle any au jus, it fell apart immediately. The beef tasted old, and the au jus had no tell tale signs of having the heavenly spices and seasonings that Italian beef requires. Heck it wasn't even salty, which is usually a sign that an au jus is bad. The fries were ok, service attentive and friendly but the overall experience gave us no reason to return. read more

Came here with my husband and daughter and first impression we had to laugh..They had toilet seats right when you enter so that set the mood. Everyone was pretty friendly and they accommodated as well with the baby. A few things that made this review one star less was: waitress never asked how my husband wanted his burger. No water refills. The bathrooms were actually dirty.. unless they did it on purpose?? The restaurant was decorated really cute. It was a little annoying to have to pay at the front when you leave. Amazing!! Loved our server, Amy K! We ate at a horrible place in Dubuque last night and were really not happy about going somewhere to eat again. This place was awesome! I am unsure what the Gurt's means in the name given the playful spelling of "Dirty" (I will speculate this is someone's name). Otherwise I will not bother any longer with trying to piece what they mean. It was my first visit to Galena and when (not if) I return I will add this on the list of places to re-visit. Durty Gurt's not only makes my spell checker go mad but they are extremely welcoming when you arrive. The staff are keen to remind you about their boozey shakes -I didn't try them- and inexpensive Bloody Mary's. The place is adorned with yobby quotes which probably seemed clever when they were focus grouping them but either I am not the targeted demographic but they only managed to get a nod from us. The food is simple if unadventurous (sometimes that's a good thing people!) and my only complaint would be the terrible selection of beers. Seriously, in IL adding Goose Island's beers to your list is a no-brainer and at least then you will go from having crap selection to a decent selection as far as I am concerned. I liked the staff enough that they still get my four stars. read more

We stopped into Durty Gurts for a refuel after shopping half of Main st. We all got sandwiches, one burger, one monte cristo, one pulled pork, one patty melt. We all tried a bit of each others. It was all very good. We especially liked the inclusion of syrup with the monte cristo. The service was very friendly and the kitsch level was just about where it should be. Update: Monte Cristo has been demoted from regular menu item to special... and it isn't really that good anymore. There are various depictions of Gurt herself along with various folksy sayings on the wall (most involving alcohol). (Looking later online, there doesn't seem to be another Durty Gur'ts.) But I wanted a burger and the menu descriptions looked tempting. We both ordered burgers - I got the Santa Fe (guac, jalapenos, and pepper cheese). She got the olive burger - they weren't shy with the olives. The burger were good and required a balancing act to eat without knife or fork. The homemade fries were quite tasty. For the most fearless among us they also offer a 2lb hamburger and a 2ft hot dog. A 2 ft dog? Overall, its a good burger in a kitschy restaurant. read more
