I live just across the street from Du's and am tempted by the delicious smells of grilled teriyaki almost nightly (except for weekends...) and it is a battle of wills between my head and stomach to not eat there every night. In reality, I go maybe a couple times a month to keep the magic that is Du's Grill alive. I always get the chicken and love it. I agree that more veggies would be a good move for them, even though I love the "coleslaw" - really, what can be done to wilted iceberg lettuce to make it taste so good?? I'd also like to see more eco-friendly containers and utensils. The portions are huge and usually enough for at least lunch the next day, and the prices are very reasonable. I like these hole in the wall type places. Small menu so you don't have to spend more time looking over the menu than it takes you to eat the meal. Inexpensive and very bare bones. Came here with a few friends after trying to go to another place that has gone out of business. Driving by you could smell the food from the street. I'd heard good things about it so we decided to stop and give it a try. We all ordered the pork and beef plate. This consisted of pork and beef on a plate with white rice and a salad. All for less than $8. It was damn tasty. I added some of the sauces they had on the table, but the meat certainly wasn't dry without. Not a big fan of white rice, but ok. If it is on the plate, I'll eat it. The salad wasn't anything special. Seem to do a good amount of business. The place was pretty hopping while we were there. Not the nicest place. Sigh, I have had Du's grill on my list of places to check out, since I moved to Portland. I was in the area running errands, and decided to finally check it out. I came during the afternoon, and the place was packed, and had people waiting in line. A good sign, one would assume, considering how many great reviews there are. I would like to start with the positives, the people working there were friendly, and a few regulars were acknowledged which shows great customer service. I was in and out of there within 10 minutes, which is quick, considering the amount of people in the establishment. The poppy seed dressing was creamy and delicious, I would definitely buy a bottle of the dressing. Now onto the teriyaki, the chicken is probably the best bet, but the beef was awful. It kind of reminded me of beef jerky, with it's thin and dry like characteristics. I've honestly had better beef teriyaki at Seattle airport, where the beef looks and taste like beef and not dry jerky. No bells and whistles here, just delicious stick to your ribs food. The servings are huge and unless youre a really big eater one entree is usually good for two people or 2 meals, one to bring home later. The teriyaki marinades on the meats are delicious, the perfect combination of sweet, salty, and the bottles of sauce on the tables will add the perfect spiciness if you're into that. The entrees come with a side salad and rice. The lettuce they use is iceberg which is kind of meh but the dressing is sweet and tangy. The rice is good though, the grains are really large. Hands down the best Teriyaki in Portland.... Put's all others to R.I.P. I was a little skeptical at first, Portland has a great food scene and all. (It does lack in some areas) Good teriyaki is one of these areas. Fortunately for the wonderful people of Portlandia, there is Du's Teriyaki! It doesn't look like much, A little on the dirty run down side. However, when there is a constant steady line out the door then they must be doing something right. The Teriyaki is par cooked I'm sure. (almost positive)But it has a great grilled taste, tender and delicious. So I can forgive them for that. One of my favorite things there is surprisingly the rice. Sweet and succulent and goes incredibly well with the teriyaki chicken and condiments. The beef and pork are good as well, but just doesn't stand a chance against the chicken. The only reason I am giving them 4 stars is because on my last visit a bike rider had to go and get hit by a car on the corner. So I was the first to help of course.... She ended up being just fine and when emergency responders arrived I bounced back to my meal.... I was hoping for a free meal and got a grateful thank you. Been going here for years and would highly recommend it to anyone. Their meat, whether it be the chicken, pork, or beef, is always amazing w/ generous portions. I've ordered their yakisoba a couple times and I think this is my new favorite - full of great veggies prepared well, not too soggy and not too raw. Love their sauces - get a few extra terriyaki sauces to go - and their salad dressing matches well w/ their main dishes. All for not a lot of money too. Seating is a bit limited and parking is tight unless you park on the street. Usually crowded at dinner time, so give yourself around 10 minutes for your order to come out. Whenever I pass by "Du's Grill" on a weekday afternoon, I see a person or two popping in or popping out with their take out! Given the constant stream of activity, the grill has long been on my list of venues to check out. Today, the sun was out, and I finally had to try it! A quick glance at the menu is all one needs to know that teriyaki is the name of Du's game. Given that, I opted for the beef plate. The beef was very thinly sliced, but oh-so-very rich in flavor! While it was accompanied by a large mound of sticky rice and a spartan salad (just lettuce and carrots, covered in a nice house poppy seed dressing), the meal was definitely all about the beef--and, much to my approval, said beef was dished out liberally. While "Du's" is a take out-oriented business, I dined in. While there are only a handful of seats, and the seating area has a stale, almost motel-like ambiance (maybe its the carpet?), there is, in fact, a benefit to eating in: full access to your own bottle of the house teriyaki marinade! Like most teriyaki sauces, it's far less salty than your standard soy, and seemed to carry with it a hint of vinegar [a la Filipino dishes, if I'm not mistaken]). A plate of "Du's" food will run you around nine dollars, a price which Yelp still considers cheap, but which I still consider to define as a rare occasion! That said, if you're craving teriyaki and/or cost is no concern, the meal, while basic, comes with a strong recommended. PS - I should note that orders were being made throughout the entire course of my meal. At least three out of five were for the chicken. SO. Du's is miraculous trifecta of menu simplicity, large portions, and consistently delicious product. Located on an awkward corner off NE Sandy, parking is NOT easy. If it just happens to be your lucky day and you land 1/5 spots in the front lot opt for the street/neighborhood... parking assuming the few extra steps won't send you into a respiratory fit. I know 20 extra steps can be a REAL issue for most; but parking is so tight you are damn near guaranteed an excellent looking dent from someone else or from hitting the dumpster conveniently located in the middle of these spots. If the 20 steps does send you into a respiratory fit, you should probably turn around because once those grills are running, the place is loaded with smoke! Delicious smoke. Probably 95+% of everything they sell is Teriyaki Chicken which is served on a bed of rice and with a side of poppy seed iceberg salad. Don't even consider something else. I could go on and write another 3 paragraphs about chicken and rice, or you could just trust me when I say "it be bomb." Another tip: sometimes there is a line which delays the food, if you order ahead, you can usually just walk in and snag it when you get there (after you wait in line to pay). Not open on weekends! Du's is pretty good for a place that serves a limited menu of grilled meat. My coworker who lives in Portland took me here. Du's does teriyaki grilled meat which is served with rice and salad. It is also a popular cop spot as my coworker pointed out. When we went there were at least 6 police motorcycles out front. I can see why this place is popular. For under $8 you can get a plate of meat, rice, and salad. I opted for beef and chicken and also a side order of kim chi. Also got the hot sauce to go too. Du's has a good system in place. The food is cooked asap and plopped in to go containers and off you go. Getting back to my desk, I opened up my to go container and smelled all the wonderful spices in. I doctored it up with hot sauce and kim chi and dug in. WOW! The meat was tender, not tough and chewy. The rice was good old Asian rice too! Oh, how I miss Asian rice when I travel. I love the stickiness of it and how it just goes great with the meat. The salad was very tasty. The dressing was just right. Not sure what it was, but it was good! Though I was getting full halfway through, I decided to keep eating and finish it up since I had no refrigerator in my hotel room. I can see that you can make two meals out of one order at Du's. The service at Du's was really good. The guy at the counter was polite and attentive and made sure my food was wrapped up properly before I left. For a place that works as fast as they do, it is nice to know that they pay attention to intricate details such as packaging the food. Great food and service and fast! I've been going to Du's for years now and truly believe it's the best Teriyaki Chicken and salad meal combo in the world, and it feeds me two full meals for only $8.00! Not to mention the guy who runs and owns it is remarkable with remembering orders and guests, many of which he greets by name. I have always had the freshest grilled teriyaki Chicken/beef/pork. There was even a day when I happened to walk in right as the grill was being cleaned. They cleared the grill of all food, carefully scrapped all debris away, then flipped the grill tops, and began laying new pieces of meat on the clean grill. It was amazing to see that they grill using real charcoal, and will typically clean the grill a couple times daily. If you walk in and see a mess on the floor, don't be fooled... that's from that day's busy rush. I love it so much I actually drive past 8 other teriyaki places to get Du's! Nough said. read more

Oh Du's...how I love and hate you at the same time. Here's the deal. If you want Terriyaki, go to Du's. Just realize, the kitchen looks disgusting, and sometimes its questionable how clean anything in there is. BUT, it always tastes so good. I love their poppyseed dressing they put on the salad. Their portions are huge, you won't be hungry afterwards. Prices are good. It is strange, as other Terriyaki options I have tried in NE Portland are terrible in my opinion. Even Terriyaki Town down the road from Du's is questionable...the meat should be grilled, not however you prepare chicken with no grill marks. Service is always snappy too. Walk in, order your food at the counter, and its out in minutes. I never eat there as its cramped and uncomfortable I think. Plus I want to forget about their kitchen as fast as possible :) Dang, while writing this review I'm getting hungry and thinking Du's is on my way home from work...that is a bad thought. I am absolutely addicted to this place! I was turned on to Du's by a co-worker, and I thought he was exaggerating when he talked about how good the food is. He was right on target. I always get the beef and pork, and the portion is very generous. It always ends up being 2-3 meals for me! I get extra sauce and extra poppyseed dressing. I wish the parking were better. Their lot is very tiny and sometimes hard to drive-thru. But that is a small price to pay to enjoy the yummy food! Our family of four (mom, dad and two teens) can make it on three total meals and we usually have some left over, This is one of our default "quick, easy moderately priced, everyone loves it, tastes great". This place is always busy so I strongly suggest calling in your order ahead of time. Parking is also an issue so your best bet is to park in the Sandy Food Cart parking lot about a block away and then walk up the hill to this place. There's always the same guy behind the register that takes your order. He's not super warm and chatty but fast and efficient. The food is very consistent so there are never any surprises on that front, but that usually means the chicken will be a little too dry and the rice will be a little too sticky. This place... this place is just heaven-scent. I first discovered Du's when I lived in Milwaukie, was pregnant, and needed good teriyaki. Now, I frequent the one on Sandy because it's consistently mouth-watering good. After asking an employee about the other Du's out in Milwaukie, he said they had a falling out due to a recipe discrepancy; after hearing this I fell in love all over again. Du's is the best place to go to pick up take-out on your boyfriend's lunch break and surprise him for his birthday. Drove from Portland to Boring for that man; now he knows how much I truly love him.
