I can't comment on their products as I haven't managed to buy anything there. Perhaps my appearance doesn't measure up to their exacting standards but the fact is I have never been treated with the kind of contempt I received from the staff of this establishment. I was looking for a replacement bracelet wristband for my Wenger watch. I went up to the counter where a klatsch of staff members were having a nice chin-wag among themselves. I was ignored for an interminable period. Finally, as I gave up and made to leave, an icy looking woman approached me from the other side of the shop, looked me up and down and said "Yes?" in a tone suggesting I had a bad smell (which I patently do not.). I told her what I wanted, and she said "Back there", waving in the general direction of the rest of the world, and walked off. I went "back there", where I found another person sitting behind a counter doing nothing but ignoring me as hard as he could. When he couldn't avoid eye contact any longer he winced at me and said "Yeah?" I told him what I wanted and before I could finish my sentence he said "No" in a tone suggesting I must be a complete moron and walked away. What a strange business model! Business must be really really good for a shop to employ staff who actively discourage people from buying anything and piss them off in the process. My money is as green as anyone's and if I treated my retail customers this way I would be sacked. read more

I bought my engagement diamond at blue Nile and wanted to get it appraised. One of the associates came over offering to help. It was GIa certified so I had all the specs in that document. Upon reviewing the diamond, he immediately began questioning the validity of the diamond and the matching documentation. He brought out the magnifying glass, checked for a bit and claimed he could not find the laser inscription either. Then he brought over a collegue who also examined and stated the same. Lastly, he claimed that he would do me a favor and not charge me for an appraisal claiming he wouldn't put his name in such item. So I decided to take it to another jeweler for a second opinion and within seconds, he verified what I had. To make sure, I asked if I could see the inscription, and sure enough, there it was. Obviously, these guys were not happy with the fact that I didn't buy from them and wanted to steer others out of purchasing elsewhere. Even if they could have made a quick few hundred bucks for the Appraisal, they'd rather lie and have you get scared so that you would buy from them, since they are so legit. These guys lost a potential repeat customer for sure and probably some more by having forcing a customer to leave negative feedback. read more

Very very overpriced for no reason. My fiancé bought my engagement ring from here and it was way overpriced for the quality and size of the diamond. Other stores on the same street will sell you an identical diamond for much cheaper. You basically pay for the name of the store and the fact that it has been there for years. We also tried replacing the leather strap of a Longine watch here and they quoted us $250 at first and then after a minute dropped the price to $200. They are listed as a certified retailer of Longine watches. So we checked with another jewelry and watch store on Back Bay (which is also a certified retailer) and they gave us the identical leather watch strap from Longine for $53. So this shows you that they randomly name the prices here. read more

I am not sure how this place stays in business. There must have been 6 sales people working, 3 of them sitting down and the other 3 talking amongst themselves. Asked first person I saw behind the desk sitting down for help and he told me to go ask "The guy in the green shirt". No don't bother getting up and walking me over. I break up the huddle among co-workers to ask about a screw replacement for my watch. Guy looked at the watch for 1 second and said I needed to contact the manufacturer. I had a custom watch band built, but he didn't bother looking long enough to realize that. Thanks you were a tremendous help. They OVERPRICE the jewelry and the service experience I have had there sucks! First off the lady helping was clearly impatient with me and annoyed that I asked to try on the same set of earrings twice. She was so unfriendly it was frustrating! I settled on a pair of earrings after one of the managers told me he would give me a discount. I came home and looked up the earrings online and the suggested retail for these earrings from this designer is 300$ cheaper than what I paid even after their supposed discount! WTF?! We went into EB Horn to look at an estate ring I had seen online. We met John Bourgea. My boyfriend and I are older, so a surprise presentation wasn't the way we were going. I tried the ring on that we saw, and explained the style I liked. Low profile, multiple stones. We perused the cases together. I'm not sure if John pointed the ring out, or if it caught my eye. Truly a stunner. When I tried it on, I felt like it was Cinderella's slipper, meant for me. The main stone is from the 1800's. A beautiful estate piece that was way over budget. However, I couldn't stop thinking about it! We made it work. John was a great communicator. We went in two weeks later to purchase it. Two weeks after that we went back to have it sized while we ran some errands in town. A+ from beginning to end. No wonder they have been around so long. We look forward to visiting John periodically to make sure all the stones are secure. read more

I came here to look at engagement rings. They said they were very competitive with online stores, but after I looked at a few very popular sites they weren't even close. I asked if they would set a stone I bought online and they said of course, but two weeks later when I brought it in, the sales person was upset that I didn't buy from her and basically turned me away even though I was going to spend $1,000 there on a platinum setting. They put me in a very difficult position as I was proposing that weekend with no other researched alternative for a setting. They are not competitive with the popular online retailers and in my experience, don't keep their word. read more

Be Careful- I went to EB Horn to replace an earring of a set my mother bought a year back. When I went in to pick it up, they challenged me to tell the difference in a boastful way, and it was clear. The halo was smaller with smaller diamonds, the halo was set back more and the frame itself was thicker silver. It became apparent that the salesman didn't actually check the replacement earring that came in from texas. When I'm paying $400 for one earring, you would think they'd check to make sure it was good match- but no. They resolved the issue by taking a stone out of a pair of the same batch and making a match. HOWEVER, when I went to pay, an extra $50 was added to my total out of no where. When I questioned the manager, he said "Oops, my mistake." I shouldn't have to pay attention to every single detail to ensure 1) I get a matching earring and 2) I don't get charged an extra $50 for no reason. EB Horn has nice jewelry, they seriously lack QA/QC and attention to detail. Definitely check your bill and the quality of your jewelry. read more

This was our last stop on our quest today to find my wedding band in the Downtown Crossing jewelry district. Norm was our salesman and he actually reminded me of the Norm from Cheers in terms of his personality! He was funny and probably the most entertaining salesperson we have encountered on our journey. When I could not decide between three rings, he quipped with my fiance that we could get all three. He also got a kick out of how quick I was able to yay or nay each ring I tried on. This is not to say that he was not knowledgeable. In fact, Norm was very helpful and showed us a large selection of rings. There are endless cases of rings to see and even though this place was buzzing with people, Norm took his time to show us as much of the inventory as we were interested in seeing. I felt that the prices were competitive with what we have seen and they had many unique styles. When we asked about a specific designer, Norm was able to call over his colleague Mark to assist us instead of pretending to know the answer or just telling us no. Both men took their time looking through a catalog and the designer's website to find out more about the ring we were looking for. I was so impressed by this aspect of customer service since the place was very busy. This was much better than a chain store that we visited earlier that morning that basically told us they didn't have the ring in stock at the moment and made no effort to try to help us out. This place is definitely louder and slightly more hectic than the other stores we visited. However, I think the prices and selection are definitely worth it! She did not have much time as she needed to be somewhere else. She saw Dermot and he said to come back in about 2 hours. She left, then called me and told me she needed to be at her other appointment in Cambridge in an hour or so. I called them back and spoke with Lorraine and told her of the situation. What a fantastic jewelry and watch repair shop. This place should not be confused with all the other fly by night cheap jewelry and cash for gold shops in downtown crossing. Quality establishment that has excellent customer service. The band on my Movado watch broke and I needed to order a new one. I dropped it off and they said it should take about 2 weeks to order a new one. To my surprise they got back to me much sooner saying that Movado no longer sold the band for my watch and that they repaired it on the house. They could have easily charged me $50 - $100 and I would have still been satisfied. read more

I have been going to EB Horn for over 30 years. It is a wonderful unique family run business, quirky but in a good Yankee kind of way. However, in my last several visits something has changed unfortunately. The staff at watch repair are clearly very unhappy and unpleasant. Recently, I came in for a repair. I nicely said hello and asked an older gentleman sitting in the watch repair area for help. He rudely pointed to someone else without a word back. OK, he's a cranky guy. Then, that watch specialist also was unnecessarily unpleasant out of nowhere and seemed annoyed at having to do her job and assist me. When I came back to pick the watch up she didn't reply to my greeting of hello and how are you, and looked at me stone faced as if I had somehow bothered her...absolutely miserable. Yikes. In fact the "karma" of the place now is very negative and as much as I used to love it I can't continue going to an establishment with employees that are so rude. There are so many other places in Downtown Crossing for watch repair...I will go to them in the future and find one that is happy to have my business. I wanted to have the diamond from the ring reset as the original setting was very elaborate and couldn't be worn with my wedding band. I was greeted by John in a friendly polite manner and he worked with me to find a solution the would fit our budget and my lifestyle. He crafted a custom platinum setting for my diamond and I was honestly stunned when I saw the new ring. It exceeded my expectations and only took two weeks to complete. Now I can wear my engagement diamond daily and enjoy it rather than leaving it to sit in a drawer. The fine detail on the pave halo setting is incredible. Beautiful jewelry selection, but extremely overpriced. Went in to look for a a pair of cufflinks as a gift for a special occassion and the prices that I were quoted seemed a bit high and were way more than what I wanted to spend. I ended up in the Jeweler's Building at another jeweler I have used before, and found something even better than what I had looked at at EB Horn for about $200 less. The pair I ended up purchasing had yellow gold, black onyx and diamond. The one I had looked at in EB Horn was yellow gold and black onyx, no diamonds. I was afraid to ask them the prices of the cufflinks with the diamonds after I was told the prices on the ones without. That being said, the reason I am giving them 3 stars as opposed to 2 is their watch repair. I've gone in there to have batteries replaced, links added/fixed, and found their watch repair to be quick and reasonably price. But for jewelery, you are better off comparison price shopping in the Jeweler's Building first. read more

Dropped my watch the other day and broke a little pin that holds it together. Finally Yelped watch repair shops and this one came up as the closest to where I work. Had to wait a few minutes upon walking in around 5:15pm, but upon being helped I had a new pin inserted, pleasant conversation, and a charge of FREE for the service and I was on my way within 5 minutes. I realize its not typical for a watch repair to be so minimal as to be free, but it was this kind of gesture that will ensure I'll be back when I drop the watch again and need more than just a little pin next time. After a two month process which involved visiting 8-10 different Jewelers in Massachusetts, I checked out EB Horn as a last resort trying to find a not so common antique cut stone within my budget. Long story short, Norm had exactly what I was looking for and most importantly, his price was reasonable considering other Jewelers I visited downtown were charging almost a quarter more for lesser quality stones. I pretended to know very little about diamonds during most of my visits and it was interesting to see how some sales people will quickly take advantage of the naive buyer and try to sell for more than what something is actually worth. It definitely helped me weed out the dishonest sales people. Norm on the other hand was a straight shooter. Very friendly, knowledgeable and I recommend him to anyone searching for any style engagement ring. Great experience! read more

I took a charm bracelet here to have charms added to the bracelet. I was very unimpressed with their service. First of all, the soldering job was very shoddy -- there are lumps and dents where the metal was soldered, not smooth looking at all. The other thing that really irritated me is I feel like they were trying to steal pieces of gold from me. One of my charms had a very large bale, and when I went to pick up my piece the first time, the bale was missing. When I inquired about its whereabouts I was told the jeweller must have left it on his bench. Also, the jeweller soldered one of my charms to another charm, instead of soldering them both onto the bracelet itself. After I left the store, I noticed that a few of the links from charm with the large bale are missing. I can only assume they take whatever little pieces of scrap gold they can get their hands on, and over the course of many customers, probably end up with a sizable sum of money at the end of the day. In short, I would not recommend this place at all. I'm thankful I tested this place out with my own jewelery, and not an heirloom piece. I guess it's my fault for being lazy and going downtown to get this done. Also, they charged $12.50 to get each link on the bracelet soldered on, which is way too much for the quality of work which is provided. read more

I sold some of my unwanted gold here on 2 different occasions because I work nearby. The first time the guy who helped me had a lukewarm personality to start but warmed up a little by the end of the transaction. The second time (several months later) the same guy helped me and had the same lukewarm personality, but this time he never warmed up. The woman who writes you the check for your gold has a stick up her...well, you know...and made me feel like the poor relation waiting for my food stamps or something. Because I was selling instead of spending, I assume. After that last experience I told myself I wouldn't deal with them again. But today (I don't know what possessed me to do it) I called to see if they buy Movado watches because I don't wear mine anymore and it's collecting dust in my jewelry box, which seems a waste since I have my eye on some other jewelry at Tiffany. Whatever woman answered the phone was seriously snotty and the answer I got out of her was a maybe...I would have to bring it in to see if it's up to their standards. I would have been fine with the maybe (it makes sense they would want to see it, of course) if she hadn't sounded like such a snob about it. This is a Movado we're talking about, not a Swatch. If EB Horn thinks they are too good for us "low-lifes" that want to sell our unused or unwanted jewelry now and then, then EB Horn should not advertise that they BUY JEWELRY. Duh. I give it two stars only because when I did sell the gold, I feel like I got a fair price for it. I would never go here to buy jewelry, because their customer service leaves everything to be desired. read more

I had to go in there to look at replacement diamonds for an insurance claim and as if the whole situation wasn't emotional enough, they were so rude to me they made me cry. Absolute worst customer service I have ever experienced. They did not show my husband and I an ounce of respect or kindness. Going through a loss of something as sentimental as an engagement ring is really difficult and dealing with EB Horn made it so much harder than it had to be. I still have no replacement diamond. I have heard stories about people being treated poorly in E.B. Horn, but I have only experienced excellent service myself. My wife bought my engagement ring here (I am a woman married to a woman), and we bought our wedding bands here. We worried going into jewelry stores that we would be made to feel uncomfortable or that salespeople would act uncomfortable because we were two women. At E.B. Horn, we were always treated with respect. We have made all our purchases with Paul, whom I recommend highly. He has been patient and never pushy. He spent a long time with my wife to make sure the diamond on my engagement ring was perfect. Recently I went in to look at wedding bands because I was unhappy with the one I purchased (my fault, not Paul's). After Paul gave me as long as I needed to look and try things on, I talked to my wife and we decided they were a bit more than we could afford right now, even though I felt the prices were fair for what I was looking at. Paul was perfectly nice about the fact that I wasn't going to buy anything after all. We will go back to him every time we want jewelry. He remembers us and is always friendly. I also think the quality at E.B. Horn is very high. I have friends with larger diamonds on their rings, but mine is much clearer and better cut, so it is has more sparkle than theirs. The setting, which is unique to E.B. Horn, is super secure. They check it for me every time I go in, but it has not budged. My sister's co-worker once told her, "Girl, if it's not E.B. I recently went here with my boyfriend to pick out a Christmas present. I saw a three stone ring that had a pink sapphire in the center but I wanted a blue sapphire center. They said they didn't have that style ring but could swap out the stone for a small fee. We agreed but when we picked up the ring they quickly moved us out of the store without letting us evaluate the job they did. It was a horrible job. The stone isn't very nice and it's too small for the setting so you can see big gaps between the center stone and the side stones. It's also off center. On top of this they were nice on any of our visits. With so many great jewelry stores on Washington street I would try another spot. read more

Two of the persons working there looked at it for five about minutes, wondering whether they can resize it - rather annoying to wait for that long for a simple yes or no. After the five minutes we told them the diamond was clarity enhanced, after which they immediately said they cannot possibly "touch it" because they would destroy it, all with a very condescending tone. Five minutes later we found a real jeweler - the Armenian guy working down the road, who resized it perfectly. A very, very unpleasant experience. read more
