How does one screw up Kalbi ribs? Well, New Eagle did. The WORST ribs I've ever had! They were tough as nails and tasted only like ginger. No soy sauce, sugar or sesame oil taste. I've been here at Eagle Cafe many times from the days when my office was above the restaurant around 40 years ago. The restaurant has gone through many owners and transitions through the years. Its current manifestation isn't that great. Willy and I usually rotate between Eagle Cafe and Tanaka Saimin when we are tired of eating hostess bar food. Bar food can be exceptional depending on the kitchen mama, but is way more expensive than at local restaurants. We have been to Eagle Cafe several times in the last six months but this Wednesday night may have been the last time for a while. We got to Eagle Cafe about 8:15 and there were only three other parties there. The restaurant closes at 9:00. They have live music M-F until 8:30. This Wednesday they had a solo guitarist who played covers of popular hits. Nothing wrong with his performance. And Eagle Cafe is one of the only family restaurants that employs locals musicians so that is commendable. The food prices are decent. Willy's sizzling hamburger steak with onions and mushrooms was only $20.99. And my pork chops was only $18.99. My diet soda was $3.50. And the menu selection has most of the typical diner dishes local families enjoy. The service is friendly and efficient. The waitress with the tattoos is very patient. Willy always asks multiple questions about various dishes he never intends to order every time we are there. Maybe she doesn't remember but I do. It can be irritating. The worst part of Eagle is the food. It is hard to screw up rice, which tastes ok, even at the end of the night. And the mac potato salad is pretty good, especially when you add a little salt. But Willy's sizzling hamburger steak was drenched in brown gravy and the mushrooms and onions were sparse. He was not happy with the taste. My pork chops were extremely thin, about 1/4". And deep fried, making them extremely difficult to slice with the cut-rate Chinese steak knife provided. I have the calluses as proof. We haven't been here in a while. We decided to stop by here for lunch, because it was on the way. Parking: There is free parking, in the front, back and upstairs of the building. Location: Eagle Cafe is located on the left corner, 1st floor of the complex. Ambiance: It's a casual diner with this bright new feel to it. There are TVs now! On vacation and was tired from eating restaurant food. I wanted something that tasted like home. I ordered the oxtail soup. It was superb. Tasted like home. Tasted like an aunty was back in the kitchen cooking. The soup was clear. Whomever made the soup probably double boiled and stood over the soup to skim the grease from the top of the pot. If the grease is not skim, it will cause stomach aches in is some people after consumption. The chef used fresh Chinese mustard greens with whole shiitake mushrooms, sprinkle of cilantro, and a few peanuts. The peanuts were not overpowering but just enough for taste. Chicken Papaya soup - 3.5/5 The broth was good and tasty, but little on the salty side. The chicken consisted of wing flats and drumettes. The grab papaya was tender, not mushy or too firm. Since were arrived around 7:30p, the chicken have been in the soup for hours under heat. This made the chicken a little hard and dry. If the chicken wasn't overcooked, I would give the this dish 4.5/5. Mahi Mahi- 4/5 The Mahi Mahi was very tasty. The fillets were a bit small for our liking. That said, the Mahi Mahi was cooked perfectly. The fillets were tender, not hard and over cooked. Just increase the quantity of Mahi Mahi a little more. I will definitely return. He ordered local breakfast 2 eggs any way you choose and choice of meat and your choice of toast, rice, or hash browns. I chose combo pancake. Please don't let these photos deceive you. They look good, but in reality they weren't good at all. Here's the reasons: Hamburger steaks were hard and difficult to cut with my fork. Never had a hamburger patty that I couldn't cut with my fork. It should've been soft and tender. But it was tough. Tough to cut and tough to chew. Gravy was salty. Onions were scant, just a tiny bit on the plate along with the mushrooms. Kalbi ribs were tough. My husband had difficulty getting the meat off the bones. The rice. OMG who serves rice that's been sitting out, cold, dry and hard!!! Seriously being honest here. There were rice grains that were dried and hard. Biting into them was very unpleasant. Rice should be served hot and fresh out of the pot, instead we got cold hard rice that's probably been sitting in an opened rice cooker. We tried to give them the benefit of the doubt. We haven't been there in months since our last experience was also pretty bad. Sorry to say that we won't be going back to Eagle cafe. If they don't take pride in the quality of their food and keep serving rubbery hamburger patties and tough to eat kalbi ribs we're not getting the quality that we paid for. Located on Nimitz, Eagle Cafe has been here for many years. I believe they just changed ownership not too long ago. PARKING Not really an issue here. They have a decent sized 2 floor parking lot. Some of the parking spaces are a little tight. Also l, be sure you park in customer stated stalls. RESTAURANT Very clean and the lots of tables. Kitchen is in view and you can clearly see all the cooks working and the food coming out. For me that's a plus. Bathrooms are a little out dated but fairly clean. The waitress that served us was nice and attentive. However, they can get chatty with one another sometimes and speak Korean instead of English which I feel is a no no. FOOD Food came out nice and hot. You can tell the food was made to order. Adobo Omelette was well seasoned and the portion was huge. Loco Moco I thought was not bad. Patty could've used a little more flavor, but I enjoyed the gravy. I feel that there's a lot of repeat customers that come here. Price reasonably right. I love the cilantro taste from gyoza. Besides the club sandwich w/avocado that is my other favorite. I have to say with the new cook, I can really taste the difference. Lets just say I go here for my saimin fix ( if no Kauai visit for awhile) I love the noods which is nice and firm, the broth is not the dashi broth, taste like its a mixture of bone broth and dashi and not as salty. ( I could be wrong) I really enjoy eating the saimin here. I will have to wait for my brother who is a saimin fanatic to give me his input, hehe. For the husband he likes the chicken papaya soup with marunguay leaves but last visit they ran out of this, the only thing the soup is good but it is on the pricey side for soup. It wasn't very crowded for Thursday night at 6:30. My husband enjoyed the Lamb Curry. My friends had the Adobo and the spaghetti. I tried a little of the Adobe sauce and found it wasn't too vinegary. I liked it. I was told that the spaghetti was on the sweet side. I had the Chopped steak. I like the mix of vegetables and the tender meat. I've been eyeing this place out for a while now and was finally invited for another breakfast adventure date with my lovely husband this morning. Upon entering, we were greeted and seated right away. The auntie that took our order was very accommodating, funny and friendly, even suggested a couple items knowing that it was our first time there. We ordered: 2 coffees The crispy fried pork belly Local breakfast w/ fried rice, bacon, & eggs Loco Moco Within minutes my husband received his food first and let me try his fried rice before he mixed everything together. Because his plate tasted so good, I was so excited to try my crispy pork belly and immediately took a big bite. I instantly regretted it. That first chew unleashed an unsavory overwhelmingly gamey porky taste and smell that I just don't like. I ended up just eating my mac salad and picking at the rest of my food. My husband felt bad and ordered the Loco Moco for us to share while I box up the pork belly to take home. The loco moco definitely made up for it. I consider it one of the best loco mocos I've eaten so far. If it wasn't for that, I wouldn't want to come back. read more
