Moving day could have been a nightmare, because our destination house was still under construction, but dispatchers Ken and Jose and move crew head Elvin worked with me to delay delivery by three days. At the site, Elvin's crew and local affiliates worked in a very difficult environment to get everything in safely. They even delivered my grand piano to a workshop in another town on their way home. The crew was great, but after whoever's estimate ended up being incorrect , ken Robertson called me to tell me he had a high profile client and wouldn't be able to finish loading our stuff into our storage unit, and would just leave it in the open storage driveway, because they needed to go to the other job. Leaving my wife in tears as we had to leave our home and drive to So Cal. Great guys in the crew, can't say less about management, they also broke my $2000. Plotter and wouldn't even cover their $60. I used Farnsworth express to move my furniture. They assured me my furniture would be protected-it was not. This is what happened. Almost everything was seriously damaged. Mayflower/Farnsworth offered a settlement, which was half of what their appraiser said it would cost. Then they denied the entire claim/insurance forcing me to go to arbitration. After eight months of grueling documentation and dealing with lawyers, I won. It was half of what it will cost to repair things. Then I asked Farnsworth for $6,500 to help in the repair, which they refused. I told them I was going to yelp them. Their response was - people don't care what you say. I have attached five images of 125. One of the images is of my furniture the day before they took it and then damaged everything. Good luck if you use them! read more

I had a complicated move, in three parts.. and every step went perfectly... I have antiques, fragile, china, lots, and many treasured objects. Not a single item was broken or even damaged, in any way. They are not the cheapest of course, that is not what i wanted.. I wanted NO Damage... as I don't think I am saving money to have to spend time afterwards dealing and fixing damaged objects. They were recommended to me by my realtor, and she was right. If you have beautiful things that you love and can afford to be sure that all will arrive safe and sound, this is the company for you. All employees were respectful and easy to have around. They labeled everything according to my very specific instructions. They clearly got along with each other, no bad vibes. And their packing was outstanding, again, because there was no damage. They were there within a day and had the bed removed in less than 30 minutes. They took it to another location for us and helped set it up. I am still going through boxes and uncovering all broken / missing items and will be filing a claim once all damage is discovered. Run as far away as you can from this company. My move was a disaster even before they pulled into my driveway to pack my items. Earl Farnsworth charges *literally* DOUBLE all other cross country movers in the Bay Area I spoke to (at least 15 companies) and for that price tag, I expected a premium experience and I got anything but. Some of my issues: filed a parking permit for the wrong address (if you live in SF you know a parking permit is essential); sent 3 guys to pack up my 500 sq foot apartment, two of which had never packed before so it took them 7 hours to pack my stuff (I didn't have that many belongings and had packed half of my belongings myself before they arrived); upon delivery I realized these guys had no idea how to pack and half of the items on my valuables list were damaged in some way. They purposefully put my belongings in as many boxes as possible to charge me for 3 pallets: put a single wooden board in its own box, put my reusable grocery bags in their own box (I only have about 5) with stuffing, but shoved things that needed their own box into some to make it fit. Absolutely ZERO additional care or attention was given to the items I deemed high value. I cannot even put into words what a headache this move was and how many tears were shed at the hands of Earl Farnsworth. A priceless item damaged beyond the point of repair. Every box I opened and unpacked that they had done brought more tears. I have moved cross country 4 times and while each had its share of issues, all of those combined do not equal what I experienced with Earl Farnsworth. They will sweet talk you during the initial quote and you think you're in the best hands before they bamboozle you. I wish I had another company I could recommend for you, but I don't, just avoid these guys at all costs. read more

I'd heard horror stories about movers and storage companies. We needed a mover who could also store for us, then move us back in to our home after our remodel. Ken came to our house and spent the time to give us an accurate estimate. In fact he gave us two estimates: one if we did a lot of packing prior, and the other if they were to pack everything. At the end of two days of packing and loading, their team of three, my husband and I were like family. We cracked jokes, teased one another, told stories about our lives, and all the while these guys didn't miss a beat. They were professional, lightning fast, highly skilled -- you could write a textbook study about industry best practices on this company. I understand that they're family-owned, and non-family staff have work there for years. Our lead mover's wife even works in the office. One of the team was a surfer and triathlete who likes cold water swimming, like we do. Very personal and personable in the estimation process -- good crew in Oakland -- loaded everything very efficiently into pods. The cross-country trip took a LONG time but I think that's the case with all movers. Everything arrived in perfect condition. I just wish I had more stars to give. Like other reviewers here I've heard some horror stories associated with various movers friends have used. My family has stored and moved stuff with Farnsworth here in San Rafael probably for my entire life now (30 years -__-) so I knew I didn't have to worry about anything being stolen or missing, etc. Having said all that, this past week was the first time I'd ever asked the crew to move stuff into a home of my own, and I could not have asked for a more professional yet down-to-earth, hardworking, friendly crew. We had a piano and a desk that were huge and heavy, and getting them into our San Francisco home (narrow stairways, tight corners) was no small feat. However for these guys, it was all in a day's work. Both the desk and piano are old family heirlooms - the piano used to be played by my great grandparents as far back as the 1920s - so I was a little worried that they'd catch a nick or scratch along the way (or worse, that they just wouldn't be able to fit through the gate). Of course, they got it all done, no problem. Long story short: can't recommend them highly enough. You'd be insane to use any other moving/storage company. read more

I used this company for a move some time ago and I will never use Earl Farnsworth Express again. I got their name out of the Diamond Certified Directory. For my move, they gave me an estimate, and I either donated or discarded many of the items that were figured in that estimate. After the move I was charged the same amount as the original quoted price. I was ripped off by this company and I tell everyone I know who might be moving about my experience. I'm glad to see they are no longer in the Diamond Certified Directory, and the next time I move I will be hiring one of their competitors. read more

We didn't use Farnsworth to move, but we did get an estimate from them for a cross-country move. This review is for that (really crappy) experience. When I called to set up an appointment for an estimate, the woman I spoke to on the phone made it seem like a big inconvenience to send an estimator to Oakland, even though their website says they serve Alameda County. Also, their office is literally 1 minute from the Richmond Bridge, making it just a 20-minute drive. (And the estimator was going to be in San Francisco that morning already, which is an even farther drive from San Rafael). I never got the promised email confirmation of the estimating appointment, but they did show up on time for the home visit. But then we never got an actual estimate. Other reps were able to give an estimate on the spot (isn't that why they carry those snazzy ipads now?) or within a day at most. Finally, I emailed them to follow up. Turns out they misspelled my (easy to spell) name and email address (despite me spelling both for them multiple times on the phone), AND failed to write down my phone # when I called, so they sent the estimate off into the ether. Still waiting for them to send the actual estimate, although the person I've been emailing with (Ruth) sent a dollar amount -- TWICE as much as our lowest estimate with exactly the same parameters, and $4K more than our mid-range estimate!!!! Also, unlike every other moving company we met with, the Farnsworth rep (Ken?) failed to give us the legally required rights and responsibilities booklet, company info packet, etc. Throughout the process, I just got the feeling that they really didn't want our business. There's absolutely NO WAY we'd use this company for a move -- if this is how they treat prospective clients, what will they do once they already have our business? And I'm pretty sure our stuff would end up somewhere in Kansas instead of Maine, based on the utter lack of organization and follow-through I've seen from them! read more

One of the worst experiences in my life. All was well until they showed up at our new home across the US and many items were missing. Most were found scattered around the very messy semi truck. The most valuable thing I had in the move was not, hmmmm? A clear Tupperware box full of very valuable box set records worth thousands of dollars. I have no proof but obviously someone on the moving team decided to keep these and sell on Ebay. We filed a claim and were denied. The driver Travis was AWOL for the first 4 days of the move and couldn't get a hold of him at all. I have a whole string of texts from him where he admits it was his fault, that they were running behind and rushing and things were getting pushed aside. They even tried to bring in things that were not even ours that I caught and told them. He did bring back a few of the items that were lost inside the truck but the valuable records are still missing 3 months later. Earl Farnsworth could have handled our claim themselves but pushed us onto corporate which was a nightmare. I have learned some very valuable life lessons after using them and will never use them again. This move cost us 12,000.00. You think they would have covered our lost item. read more

I can't speak to the actual service because they never showed up for an in home estimate. I picked them based on these reviews and had initial communication via email. They immediately replied with more detailed questions before setting up an estimate. I responded immediately and then followed up 4 days later to remind them to schedule an in-home estimate. The day before the in home estimate, I received an email, confirming the time and date of the visit as well as some other helpful information. That scheduled estimate date/time came and went with no call or communication. So, I can't speak to the service once you schedule, but if you're looking for a smooth process before you get to that point, I can't recommend them.
