Vegetable egg roll ($3.15). Excellent layered wrapper, 5-spice seasoned interior. Fabulous & cheap.

There used to be a thriving middle class of Chinese restaurants that served hearty, well-done Americanized Chinese food alongside pots of jasmine tea. You know what I'm talking about: the place that's better than the grimy $5 takeout spot with fluorescent lights, but not as hoity-toity as that upscale Szechuan spot. I feel like that type of place has vanished about as quickly and thoroughly as the American middle class. Politics aside, East China Inn in downtown Batavia is a throwback to the glory days. It's in a 1970s stripmall and serves great food. The vegetable egg roll ($3.15 for two) was phenomenal. It's a weird thing to say about egg rolls, but most of the time they're tightly-wrapped, mushy-filled starch bombs that were reheated in a microwave. But not here. These egg rolls are big, hand-made with a beautifully-layered wrapper and Chinese 5-spice-seasoned innards. I loved it. The kung bao beancurd ($5.15 for a small; $8 for a large) has a light, savory sauce and nicely-fried tofu. The peanuts, baby corn, bell pepper and mushroom provided a medley of flavors, textures and colors. Next time I'll ask them to skip the celery, but this dish was otherwise excellent. I can't wait to go back to East China Inn.

It may be one of the oldest such restaurants and certainly looks like it has been around for a long time. Has cocktails so it's got some classiness to it. The prices are pretty okay but higher than the strip mall cheaply made places. A long time favorite for those wanting that classic Cantonese. It's not authentic obviously but it certainly beats Panda Express garbage. The outside looks worn out and the inside isn't any better to be honest. Has plenty of room inside for big parties and groups. It's got a happy hour where it's about $7 for martinis. Even so, we came mainly for the food. It's about $13 for an entree, but thankfully it's big portions. She got the Kung Pao Tofu. A typical looking version of it. I got the classic Szechwan Tofu. Full of flavor. This has green, red, and yellow peppers in a homemade chili sauce. A crap ton more to get. They also have dim sum. A lot of reasons to come back. They may actually have too many things on the menu, which could explain why people complain about service. For sure we have to come back and try more things because there's a lot. It's closed Mondays. There's a ton of things for meat eaters and vegetarians.
