Im new to the Vermont , recently tried this restaurant. I give it 3 out if 5 stars. When placing the order over the phone they were not oleasant at all. Pick up no problem, however the most unpleasant Chinese food I ever had. Lovely looking restaurant however I will never be back. Sad very sad, staff rude in phone. A charming Asian restaurant, with a very capable and charming owner and her loyal family and staff. Very clean establishment. The food is always fresh and delicious. Portions are adequate. Sabino attends to the customers with expedience and his drinks are typically great. Nice location, pleasant dining accomodations. Very reasonably priced for the quality and serving sizes. Service is always fast and food is good. I love the freshly made sushi and miso soup. The atmosphere is clean and not loud. Also, they change the frying oil often and the food is always crispy. As I have mentioned in the past (harp on even), dining out is about food AND vibes. The best thing I can say regarding the vibe at East Asian Cuisine is: bring your own. Because, WOW. Situation here is dire my friends. The woman at the host stand probably should consider a line of work other than one where you deal with the public. YIKES. I arrived at about 1:30pm on a Wednesday, which is an "odd," in between time. All I'm going to say is that East Asian Cuisine might want to consider taking a little time out between lunch and dinner service. Might potentially boost morale... Anyhoo, there was a deserted, empty bar beside a dark and closed up sushi bar on the wall beyond the unwelcoming host stand. The TV was on at the bar, so I asked if I could sit there. No. Epically unhappy host began leading me across the large, center dining room, which had ALL THE LIGHTS TURNED OFF, to a row of booths along the opposite wall, where the lights were on, but not all the way up. Very dark. But! The front wall is all windows. Host began leading back into the darkest bowels, away from the windows and the light. I asked to sit near the windows where there was some light. Oh. Wait. I forgot to mention that there were 2 other diners in the entire place. Multiple empty booths at the window... She begrudgingly sat me at a booth with actual, natural light. The menu is huge and has sushi and Japanese kitchen items, plus all the American Chinese food. Which is what I was there for! There are also lunch specials. I decided to order two full sized items: Shrimp Pan Fried Noodles (mostly there are not really any descriptions on the menu, so I asked if it had veggies in it, my waiter assured me it did) and Eggplant with Garlic Sauce. Because I couldn't resist. I. Love Eggplant. Okay, legit? Portions are enormous. And I know from huge portions. LOL Snaps to my waiter for not trying to dissuade me from ordering way too much food. It is 100% my god given right as an American to over order when I dine out. Also definitely a personal goal of mine. Every time. Food is GOOD here. Veggies are all fresh and perfectly cooked. Shrimp were HUGE and also perfectly cooked. The Eggplant was DELICIOUS. Once you've got high quality ingredients (which they DO here with what I had!) the thing about Chinese American food is the sauces. Your sauces need to be delicious. I only had two, the Garlic Sauce (definitely delicious) and the sauce on the pan fried noodles (I'm not sure what it's called, but it's more on the sweet side). My only criticism is the sheer volume of sauce on those noodles. It was BONKERS. LOL The noodles were excellent, but they're fried crispy and then someone poured like half a gallon of sauce on them, so they were swimming and losing the crispy. Which forced me to eat them as fast as I possibly could. Honestly not the best approach. Still fun tho. Obviously, maybe, I could not finish the Eggplant in Garlic Sauce at lunch. this is by far the best chinese food i've ever had. i ordered the house special tofu (which is basically just general tso's tofu) and it was also some of the best tofu i've ever had and i eat tofu basically every day. it was super crispy and it was very clear that they made the sauce from scratch. when i went, we were the only people there at the beginning and 2 other groups came in after so very quiet. the service here is excellent. my water was never less than half full and i must've gone through like 5 or 6 glasses. additionally, they gave us free wonton chips with duck sauce and some wasabi dipping sauce. read more

I've been a customer of East Asia Restaurant for years and have always loved their food....especially my very favorite sesame shrimp. I ordered from them about 6 weeks ago and was SO disappointed! My sesame shrimp was awful....so much batter it was hard to find the shrimp! The brown sauce for my pan fried dumplings was actually some kind of very hot, spicy paste that was inedible. I thought maybe they were just having a bad night. Fast forward to tonight....again the sesame shrimp was AWFUL! Again....SO much batter (see pic of the pile I managed to scrape off). Okay so this is a difficult review to write. The food is 4 stars but everything else is meh so I'd give this review 3.5. My sushi meal (Miso, Salad, Huge roll) is always amazing! Fantastic fish, absolutely delicious soup and salad! I've had the tempura it's not great, their udon is super yummy as well! And my boyfriend had the orange chicken and it was fantastic. Food can be a little pricey but omg BEST SUSHI in southern Vermont. The service is fast! They're not super personable or chatty whatsoever but still very fast! The ambience is okay, it's usually a little cold in there and it can be a little bit drab but the food is so worth everything. read more

I have been to East Asia Cuisine many times and it is a great spot for lunch or dinner. The location is conveniently located in the middle of Rutland city, right across from Home Depot, with plenty of parking. There's plenty of indoor seating and it's fairly quiet around lunch time. The staff have always been very friendly and very attentive. The menu is huge, with plenty of Japanese or Chinese food options. It is priced reasonably as well. I usually get the sushi deluxe and seaweed salad (pictured), and both are pretty good quality. I was able to swap out the California roll for a spicy tuna roll. I love that before the food comes out they give you tempura chips with sweet and spicy sauces. Miso soup and peanut salad came before the sushi, and both were very good. I also ordered tea, and it was very nice since it was cold out. Overall, I definitely recommend East Asia Cuisine if you are looking for plenty of options and a decent meal. The atmosphere and decorations are a little dated, but the nice staff make up for it! Will be back again read more

They are overwhelmed for dinner, but once you get their attention you can get seated and the service is pretty attentive, although it came in spurts. They bring tea to the table along with water, which is nice. The hot and sour soup wasn't great. It tasted odd and didn't have much of the food stuff--bean curd, bamboo, egg. I'd pass next time. The crackers they serve with it tasted stale and pretty flavorless. The sesame chicken has a big buildup on the menu--white meat, a favorite of young and old alike, etc. it was decent. Freshly fried and actual white meat. It was not piping hot when it made it out. The mango beef was not great. It was a bit skimpy and the meat was grey and pretty hard. Used to love this place, but I have been cured of that after my visit tonight. It began with slow, poor service, but I mentally forgave that. I chalked it up to inexperienced college student. Fork, no knife, no chop sticks. No mustard for the crispy wontons. No water refills. After having a bad day, I ordered something that sounded delightful which I had not tried yet, as a treat. It arrived looking only loosely like the description. I ate two scallops, 1 shrimp, scraped out the crab knuckles, with the knife I got mid meal. There was no lobster. The 1/2 thing I believe might have been a kind of shrimp had an odd taste. The traditional white sauce was so salty I would easily believe it was thickened sea water. I needed chapstick even with the little I ate. The veggies were probably a canned mix. In the end I enjoyed the rice, my fortune cookie, and an orange slice. I've eaten there lots of times and tonight I was a little dissatisfied. The food was good but when I got my bill it was 20.95 for the shrimp in black bean sauce when the menu said 17.75. Be aware ask the price before you order I was a little Upset about the deception. They did make the adjustment after I said something and charged the amount that was on the menu. read more

Going to throw them an extra star just for being open on Monday during COVID when everyone else is closed; but with as slow as it was getting the order right should have been easy. Three entrees, three starters, two soups. Both soups tasted like water with lettuce in it. All the starters were ok. Not good but not messed up. Entrees; one entree was completely wrong like couldn't have been more wrong. Sweet & Sour Shrimp provided sweet and sour chicken with absolutely no sweet and sour sauce. Specifically asked how many pints of rice would come with our order; was told two pints order came with one pint. Other two entrees like the starters were ok. I generally go elsewhere because east isn't what it used to be. East is only one open on Monday that is at least ok. After this order if we need take out on Monday will just go with pizza. read more

Just had the WORST lunch here. Our waitress was completely untrained, she lacked any personality. Barely greeted us. Delivered cold food. No serving utensils. She didn't even bring out our food together. When questioned where the other entree was, she said it wasn't ready yet?! Now on to the food quality: I have eaten here fairly often. I have never experienced the shear lack of care in how the food was cooked or assembled on the plates. My friend ordered chicken with mixed veggies and was served some weird dish with a dark reddish brown sauce that was so salty it was inedible. The sauce is usually clear and garlicky. Whoever is working in their kitchen is below sub-par & should be fired and sent back to cooking school. Or better yet force fed the awful food we experienced. I'm going to make the assumption that no one's goal in life is to operate a mediocre Asian restaurant in Rutland, VT, but here we are. Spent $70 on sushi to go (plus a $10 tip for the staff). Food was tasteless. Even the "spicy" tuna wasn't. At first, I thought I had Covid and couldn't taste anything but neither could my daughter, plus I just got over Covid without losing my sense of taste and smell, so it turns out their food really was flavorless. If it was crispier I would rate it 4.5/5 Hot and sour soup: 3.5/5. Decent. Shrimp fried rice: 4/5. Very good Shrimp tempura roll: 3.5 Soft shell crab roll: 3.5 Shrimp udon: 2.5/5. Not enough noodles! Broth was good, and the shrimp were very large. But why so stingy on the noodles? Clean restaurant. Great service. We'll come again next time we come for Killington. read more

Everything we ordered tasted the same. We ordered 14 dishes. It was the same sweet sauce with no real connection to anything authentic. You couldn't tell the difference between any of the dishes. It seems to be they only have one sauce pot in the kitchen. Every ingredient gets treated the same: a stir in the sauce pot. I wouldn't recommend coming here for expensive and crappy chinese food. They got our order right, so that's good. The hot & sour soup was terrible. Cold sesame noodles were blah - just sauce, no sesame seeds, scallions, or hot pepper. The dumplings with szechaun sauce were also blah. Shrimp pad Thai was unexciting - there wasn't enough sauce, but it was adequate. The best dish we had was Hunan Pork, which had a nice amount of heat, great variety of vegetables, and very flavorful. We'll doctor up the leftovers and they'll be good.
