I don't know that this was related to the Crab Shack in Folly Beach which is one of my favorite places to eat in the area. I went here last night on a whim since my kids weren't with me this weekend (my son doesn't care for seafood). I had the Charleston seafood steamed pot and added sausage. Staff was friendly and good came out fast! Everything tasted fine too. Maybe it's just that I was there my myself, and every other time I go to the one in Folly I have been with my girlfriend or friends or my kids, or the lack of a live band, and there is something just FUN about sitting around a big pot of steaming shellfish peeling shrimp and cracking crabs and prying oysters open, or maybe I was just worn out by the week and in a little slump from some personal stuff, or being inside in the winter instead of outside when it's nicer, but I just didn't feel the same "this is really nice" that I get in Folly. It had been years since I'd been to the Crab Shack on D Road. I came back for a friend's birthday dinner. It was a party of about 30 and our server, runners, and kitchen staff were all fantastic! She used their handheld POS to place all of our drink, appetizers, and dinners and everything came out perfect. I got the salmon off the specials menu and picked collards and cheesy grits as my sides. The salmon was cooked perfectly and was a gigantic piece that I brought home and had leftovers with numerous times. As for the sides. The collards needed more vinegar which I easily fixed when I reheated them at home. And the grits tasted like water. So I also reheated them with milk and butter and was able to bring them to life at home too. I tried the buffalo shrimp and hush puppies. I would go back and order those two things and be 100% satisfied! With large parties splitting checks can be a process, but luckily the birthday girls husband picked up the tab for everyone and we were on our way, Full and Happy!! read more

Was sadly disappointed with our return after a few years. The West Ashley location was always our fav location anyway but the Crab Shacks were a Go-To for the buckets. We decided to share the steamed shrimp. And the steak and crab. The shrimp were delicious. It stopped there. The crab leg cluster looked like it had been cooked more than once and it wouldn't come out of the shell. The fries were over cooked. Not sure what they marinate their steaks in or what process they use to cook them but it seems more of a roast than a steak. Couldn't even tell what cut it was. Just seemed like a restaurant on its way out. When we told the server we were going to share the meal we had to ask for an additional plate, and then she only brought an appetizer plate. My sister and I went there on Sunday night. It was our first time patronizing the restaurant. It was raining and close to closing. However the staff was friendly and accommodating. Our server, Tina, was very courteous, warm and efficient. I ordered the Double D BBQ shrimp and crab cake sandwich. The meal came with fries and I added a side of collard greens. My sister ordered the fried flounder sandwich with fries and a side of collard greens. I am from New Orleans so all seafood dishes are measured against the New Orleanian standard. Not throwing shade just giving a little background before the breakdown. My sandwich was huge. The build was an open faced ciabatta toasted bun, crab cake, onion ring strings, fried shrimp with BBQ sauce on top. The crab cake adequate. The shrimp was not well seasoned but with the BBQ sauce and the onion rings, it all worked. It was good. It was not an "OMG, this is amazing". The fries were served hot and well seasoned. The collard greens were sweet. It was good, my only dislike was that the stems were not removed. It's a personal preference. My sister enjoyed the flounder. It was fried, flaky and seasoned well! My mother and I got the shrimp etoufee, my nephew got shrimp scampi, and my sister got crab cakes. We also got hushpuppies, crab dip, and ai got key lime pie. My sister has taken up a vegan diet and failed to mention this to our server, so when her collard greens came out with meat, as most do in the south, our waitress didn't miss a beat and brought the menus back out and got her new side in minutes! Haven't been here in a few years, but still a nice spot for seafood. It sits right off Dorchester Rd and has plenty of parking. The inside is a little dark, but they have plenty of tables. Employees were very pleasant and got anything we asked for quickly. However, I discovered a couple days later that they overcharged my credit card; tried calling them and was told to call later to speak with the owner. Such a hassle. The food was good but maybe a little pricey for the portion size (especially when they mysteriously overcharge). The fried fish and shrimp meal has one smallish piece of whiting, which was a little too fishy for my liking, and about eight small shrimp. The shrimp were very tasty. The meal comes with a tiny cup of coleslaw, which was really good, and one side. I got the side salad and it was really big for a side. It's listed as a side on their menu, but my check reflected a $1.50 up-charge for the salad (would've been nice to know up front). But the salad was good, just lacked the cheese it was supposed to have. We also got their six hush puppy basket, but were disappointed in them (just fried balls of batter, nothing else in them). My fiancé said her grilled shrimp tacos were very good. The side of French fries weren't anything special, just basic fries. They did offer to-go drinks so that was nice. Overall it was a good lunch, maybe just a little overpriced at $35 for smallish portions. Just make sure to check your credit card later as they may create a new total. read more

Popped in here for lunch with my friend and the staff was friendly and accommodating. Our waitress Savannah was very pleasant. I tried Hushpuppies for the first time, and the sweet butter they came with was soooo good. The shrimp scampi with spinach & mashed potatoes from the specials menu was also fantastic and really fresh tasting. We were seated & paid in just under an hour, which was perfect since I had a flight to catch at the nearby CHS airport. 2 scampi lunch specials, a shot of titos, a corn dog w fries, and hushpuppies came to about $40. As much as I hate to say this it is extremely overpriced for what you get granted that crab legs are not cheap but the service you get here is absolutely awful. I had to ask several times for salt and pepper to be brought to the table along with some tartar sauce the waitress kept forgetting even though the restaurant was absolutely not busy there was only two families in the restaurant along with us and the waitress kept forgetting to bring us the simplicity totally forgot about it kept eating than our glasses of sweet tea where empty she kept walking by and didn't bring a new cup until I actually called her attention and said it would be nice to have something to drink so we don't choke!! The waitress went and got us brand new drinks but put them on the table with some attitude it was like she could not be bothered with taking care of us as a table even though we were only table we should've been the focus for her but we were not therefore we ate paid and we left super unsatisfied just ridiculously priced lunch and awful service. I am all about supporting local businesses but if you're going to have a local business and have the staff like this running with attitude and being unhappy to be working there than don't have them work at all! It just makes your business look bad and it makes people wonder exactly why your stuff being rude to your guest so I hope that the owner of the crabshack sees this review because there's some changes that need to be made and specially with staff absolutely horrible I have a meeting at one staff member with a smile on their face everybody's angry disappointed they're just not happy and they take it out on your guest which in return makes us not want to go back I will not go back until I see some changes! read more

This was the first place we ate in Charleston. We came for dinner with a party for four. It was pretty crowded when we arrived. We had a twenty minute wait. It was a bit of a wait, but it was understandable and we were patient. The cool thing was that they had a barrel of peanuts out for the taking while we waited. Their peanuts were yummy. We were seated in a booth and ordered drinks. I got an iced tea. I used the restroom before we ordered food. It was a plain, but clean restroom. When I got back my Friend's Dad ordered some fried okra and pickles. Next we ordered our entrees. I got the snow crab bucket. I really was craving some crab. Our starter came first and it was really good. The okra and pickles were crunchy on the outside, but moist on the inside. I liked both the dips it was served with. Before we finished our appetizer all our entrees came. My crab was delicious. I liked the cajun seasoning on it, it wasn't too spicy, but it gave the crab a nice flavor and kick. The butter was a little on the too salty side though. Service here was great. Our waitress was really nice and got us everything we asked for from extra napkins to refills and to go containers.
