I had driven on a flat, and if you're unaware, this can rapidly degrade the quality of your drive. You can wear a CB joint, your axel, or your rotor, if I recall, and too much wear on these can do immense damage to your car's future. I had replaced two of my tires and still felt a wobble. How could it be the tires, I thought? This is why College Street Motors' experience comes into play. The car might as well be a multi-piece orchestra, with brake drums, piston percussion, and wheel woodwinds. I don't intend to go over the top with this metaphor, because it sounds like a bunch of noise and shaking for me. The mechanic left me a very detailed note, describing how there was nothing more discernible than the loud noise coming from the tires I had yet to replace. No wobbling due to damage to other parts of the car. Plus, I believe they warranty their work, maybe I'm just thinking of my AAA membership. After my tires were replaced, I was relieved at how right they were. As internal combustion engine drivetrain cars are complex, so are electrical cars in their own way. It's a world I have yet to get into, or may never dig deep enough to really gain a foothold of experience. Luckily, there're mechanics just down the street for me that took only a bit of time to diagnose the problem, find a tire match for the ones I had just gotten new, and then both install and balance. I bet their experience pays dividends to other customers, too, who are hoping to make sense of a new problem with little labor and diagnostics. My car was brought in right away and after an hour and 45 minutes I asked if it was going to be much longer. This is when I was informed that they did not have the correct filter. I ask how long it was going to take to have it delivered and they said it was only a few minutes longer. There was no apology for their oversight on not confirming that they had the correct parts needed and no discount for my inconvenience for having to wait. I was a 1st time customer. The service for a full synthetic oil change and tire rotation including tax was 105.97. I chose to support a local shop instead of a chain with thoughts that I would be supporting a small business and getting customer service that generally goes along with a privately owned company that wants to maintains a great reputation.

I went in and was told to park in front of the last garage, where a guy would meet me. After waiting several minutes, a guy came out and told me to move my car, so I moved it to a parking spot, if you can call it that, since there was about 30 square feet of puddle. The guy hovered right next to my door as I got out, and then he got in without saying anything. I asked, "How long will it take?" and heard the response, "Five! Thirty-five!" I said, "So, five minutes, or 35 minutes?" And he said, "Five minutes!" So I said, "Okay, I'll be back in a bit then, going to go across the street." What happened next was like a scene out of a bad movie. The guy just kept shouting "35!" at me, like half a dozen times, while I said, "Yeah, I know, it's $35." "35!" "I will pay you when I get back." "35!" "Do you mean you want the money now? I don't have any cash. I have a card. I can just pay you in a few minutes when you're done." "35!" "I have never been asked to pay upfront for a car inspection before, is that what you're asking?" "35!" "I don't have cash on me." Finally, a full sentence. "You said you had a card, just give it to me now." I am not about to give my card to this guy, who looks and acts like he's drunk and clearly isn't carrying a card reader. I'm starting to wonder if he even really works there. So I say, "Look, I have never been asked to pay upfront for a car inspection before. I can pay you when I get back in a few minutes, because it's not like I am going to go anywhere: you do have my car. Or I can just take my business someplace else." Instead of responding, he just gets out of my car and walks away. So I go back in the front and ask if this is how they run their business, and the guy at the desk says, "Well I told you you needed $35." (No, he didn't.) I told him that the other guy had poor communication skills, and explained that I don't care if I have to pay upfront when it is clearly communicated in a way reflective of good customer service, and not just shouted at me repetitively in a way that isn't clear. At this point, the other guy comes out and starts shouting at me again, saying he usually says "35" three times, but this time said it five time, implying that I must be an idiot for not understanding what his neanderthal-like method of single word communication meant. Can you believe I came back with to find my flat fixed within hours, and for less than a quarter of the price I expected? On a busy day where there were plenty of cars ahead of me and maintenance work closing the street beside Amherst Tire, they told me it'd be four hours for them to get to my car if they still had the time by the day's end. My expectations must have been so low, because I was more than willing to let my car sit there and slow leak its way to a repair by the morning. They mentioned their Early Bird program, too, if you had to drop your car off before they opened. (There's a mailbox with envelopes to fill out your information in, where you put your key in the envelope and seal it, then drop the envelope into a letter drop in the garage door.) I thought I might need to drop by in the morning. Two hours later, they had managed to get to my car. Two hours later, the slow leak was repaired, just needing a bit of driving to test the patching solution pumped into the car. I had estimated $200, thinking they'd be painfully testing where the leak was, doing some odd patching, removing whatever caused the leak.. I must have had an odd idea of repair since these folk only charged me for maybe an hour's worth of labor to repair the leak. The slow leak is gone, saving me the need of replacing two tires at a time! In a circumstance where they could have easily convinced me I needed more labor and more tires, they were a cost-effective solution, administered within hours on a busy day, and surprised me with how trustworthy they were.
