    Vampire Penguin
    Kenneth L.

Eat Up! is located inside McClellan Square next to 99 Ranch in Cupertino. This place is a food court / hall which currently holds Vampire Penguin, Noodleosophy, and Chicken Meets Rice. There are tables / seats inside, but they currently aren't in use due to the pandemic. The place isn't very busy right now (due to the pandemic), so you can walk up and order with relative ease. The place is spacious so Social Distancing is easy. Worth checking out.

Opened just last week, this food court sits in between 99 Ranch and CVS. Currently, Vampire Penguin, which specializes in snow ice, is the only food stall opened. A few other food stalls are set to come in, including Noodle-Osophy, which currently has a San Mateo location and Tea Hut Bahr. All the food stalls appear to be Asian-centric, which isn't surprising, given the Asian population in Cupertino. It's much smaller than your average shopping mall food court, especially compared to Westfield's at Valley Fair. However, with the flood of business that this particular 99 Ranch gets, I anticipate that this food court will equally get just as busy, once it's fully operating. Parking here can be challenging as it is, and now this just compounds it. Nonetheless, it's always great to have more food options anywhere and everywhere, right?!

Went here with my wife and friends to check out Vampire Penguin. This food court is small with only two business open at the moment. Their restroom is super clean.

It also has literally food from all over China including Taiwanese food. The service is good and it's part of food court so I can't complain about the atmosphere. My problem has to do with the shenjianbao. I'm SO TIRED of places that had no pedigree of shanghainese food making shanghainese food. If you don't know how shanghainese food works don't make them. Shenjianbao looks ok but it's so bad. They got the size right and they did pan fry correctly on the "wrong" side (flipped upside down which is correct). However the dough is way too thick and the filling doesn't taste right. Nothing is right about the taste. The fact they also make frozen dumplings tells me that this is not made by someone who knows about shanghainese food. The rice burrito or Taiwanese rice roll is alright and even though it's slightly expensive but we are in the South Bay. I kinda don't want to say anything bad because the food court is obviously dying and I don't want it to die but making subpar shanghainese food gets on my nerves. Just take it off your menu and concentrate on stuff you know how to make.

There is a decent amount of seats inside and they can do To-Go as well. To order your food, you have to first got to the self serve line, where you can select a wide variety of items (beef, tofu, veggies, fish balls, etc) to add to your hotpot. Then you weigh your items, select your broth and pay based on the broth and weight. I chose the mala spicy dry broth (15.99 per pound) and it was solid. The dry broth doesn't have soup, but they cook your items with flavorful oils and provide rice. I selected a good amount of items and enjoyed all of them. The beef, Napa cabbage, broccoli and the fish balls were the highlights as they absorbed the flavors the best. The chunk and fried tofu wasn't that good, and I wouldn't recommend getting it. Overall, I had a chill time eating here, and I think it's a solid place to go to if you're craving hot pot but you don't want to pay too much.

I got the crispy pork belly banh mi for $12 and it was a pretty good size sandwich with lost of pork belly chunks. It was also packed with lots of carrots, lettuce and daikon. I added some mayo at home. It needed some kind of sauce because the sandwich was a bit dry despite having lots of veggies. The carrots and daikon did not taste like they were pickled. The bread was toasty crispy crust but soft on the inside. Got it to go as it was close to closing time. Nice dining area. Clean, inviting and spacious. They also sell their dimsim frozen.
