It also has literally food from all over China including Taiwanese food. The service is good and it's part of food court so I can't complain about the atmosphere. My problem has to do with the shenjianbao. I'm SO TIRED of places that had no pedigree of shanghainese food making shanghainese food. If you don't know how shanghainese food works don't make them. Shenjianbao looks ok but it's so bad. They got the size right and they did pan fry correctly on the "wrong" side (flipped upside down which is correct). However the dough is way too thick and the filling doesn't taste right. Nothing is right about the taste. The fact they also make frozen dumplings tells me that this is not made by someone who knows about shanghainese food. The rice burrito or Taiwanese rice roll is alright and even though it's slightly expensive but we are in the South Bay. I kinda don't want to say anything bad because the food court is obviously dying and I don't want it to die but making subpar shanghainese food gets on my nerves. Just take it off your menu and concentrate on stuff you know how to make.

That speaks to my predictability (ha ha!) and the awesome customer service. I only found the thick noodle stir fry a bit too salty as I got to the bottom where the soy sauce remained. The tofu with crab roe was good, soft tofu in squares and sumptuous crab roes. Finally we ordered deep fried fish (appetizer), sautéed eel, stir fried shrimp, lion's head meat ball and a vegetable dish. They gave us watermelon slices at end of meal. The appetizer dish, deep fried fish, is served warm with light sweet syrup, delicious! The sautéed eel dish was very good with a lot of sliced eel. Other restaurants would add bamboo shoots or use shredded pork as disguise for eel, but today I hardly see anything other than real eel. The shrimp in the stir fried shrimp dish are cooked al dente and not oily, not heavily starched either, which requires a lot of cooking skill. The lion's head meat balls are my favorite. The meat ball is very soft, the sauce tastes wonderful that I could pour it over a bowl of rice and enjoy to the last drop. Since this is a family style restaurant so don't expect superb service. The owners have run this restaurant for 20 years and we really appreciate their perseverance. My family truly believe their dishes have the authentic Shanghainese taste. Food can order to go, too.

When I started looking over the menu she kept saying chow mein and pointing to it on the menu. I get it, if I ordered something exotic I might not like it. But I grew up here and have a pretty wide palette. For a moment I thought she might really recommend the chow mein and ordered it. It was ok, just what you'd imagine. Nothing wrong with it but it was boring. I do plan on going back and trying some of the dishes I wanted that day. The smoked fish plate looks yummy. I could use a good eggplant with garlic sauce.

Everything is takeout only and they've got a mix of some specialty Chinese produce, frozen dumplings / buns, and ready to eat hot foods. Pricing isn't super low, but definitely cheaper than eating out and they absolutely stuff the to-go containers to the brim. My go-to items are always the Scallion Pancake, which is so large, they hand it to you folded into fourths. The dough has a satisfying chew and stretch and the scallions add the perfect bit of brightness. The braised Pork Feet are also excellent, super tender and melt in your mouth fatty with all the gelatin. Most recently, I tried the Purple Rice Roll, which is great value though it probably won't knock your socks off. Since Marina Foods changed their recipe for the worst, I'd opt for this one instead.

I like stinky tofu and used to get it at Southland Flavor Cafe before they closed down. The Southland version didn't compare to the Michelin-starred place in Taipei, but it was good, if not quite stinky as I would have liked. I didn't have high expectations for this stinky tofu, because it looked like a different type and was in what appeared to be a soupier broth, based on the poster, but went ahead and got two orders to-go, sight unseen, as I knew every member of the family would want to try it. When I cracked open the container, I was hit with the strong waff of the fermented tofu and it wasn't the soupy broth, but more of a drier sauce, like closer to the Michelin stuff in,Taipei, if not drier. It was a touch spicy, and the stinky level was stronger than version I got at Southland. If Southland was 5/10 and the Michelson was a 10/10, I would give this a solid 8/10. If you love stinky tofu, this is a great version without having to fly to Taiwan. Very surprised by it, in a great way!
