We have been curious about this restaurant since we moved to the neighborhood. Finally got a chance to check it out. It is a bit of a dumpy place right next to a gas station, across from an empty strip mall shop area! We weren't even sure the restaurant was open when we got here. We were asked to pick any table - mostly booths. There's a QR code to scan and place your order. After peruse quite an array of items we picked the ma po tofu and the beef with onions. Service was minimal- we weren't even sure presented with 2 cups and a carafe of water to start. Our order arrived and we got a complimentary seaweed miso soup. Soup was quite good with real seaweed - not the dehydrated stuff in some Japanese restaurants. Surprisingly the food was delicious! The ma po tofu was very authentic. There's schezwan peppers or Mala in it but it was not overpowering that it numbs your tastebuds! The tofu was soft and silky. The beef had good flavor and balanced the meal out. Beef was tender. Overall we enjoyed our meal. Will definitely come back to try other dishes on the menu If you're not familiar with traditional Chinese entrees the menu can be quite daunting and a turn off. I'm super surprised how good this restaurant is. In general I think Bay Area Chinese food sucks compared to SoCal and I often drive down to SoCal just because I miss more authentic Chinese food there. However I can honestly say this restaurant is just as good as the best Hunan/Sichuan food from the San Gabriel area. This used to be a different Sichuan dry pot restaurant that was so so and I really haven't gone back since the new one opened up. The name is also really misleading because many Taiwanese restaurant use Grandma as the name. As a foodie this restaurant is legit. It's in a small plaza shared with another Taiwanese restaurant so parking can be difficult but there are plenty of street parking right next to the restaurant. The interior is clean and well organized. The service is prompt and good enough. They ask for reviews but didn't promise some freebie for a semi fake 5 star review which is great. I never leave a good review just for a freebie because my integrity is way more expensive than freebies. The food is phenomenal and authentic in every way. The frogs are tender and the spices are not overwhelming and brings out the flavor of the frog meat just right. The cured pork (pig face meat) is very rare in the states. It's also cured properly to give the authentic hunan flavor. They also mix it with raddish slices which is also rare in most Chinese restaurants here in the states. Even the conch with bamboo shots surprised me in how thin the slices of the conches are. It's also flavored without being too spicy nor too salty. Everything is on point. I do wish they used better white rice but that alone is not enough for me to take off any stars. This is just a wonderful restaurant that's on par with my favorite hunan restaurant in San Gabriel and I'm so glad I found it because I'm sure going to go back every week now. read more

Came by for dinner the other night and it was a decent, albeit a touch shady and unsafe...more on that later. Parking was available in the private lot or on nearby surface streets. The interior of the restaurant was like visiting China. Staff were quick to greet as well as inform us of a promotion that there would be complimentary goods if good reviews were posted about them online...yikes...maybe it's cultural. The side emergency exit door was used for storage...definitely a safety hazard. I'm sure the fire marshall would be interested in seeing this...again...maybe cultural? Started off with the salt and pepper fish fillets and they were surprisingly decent. The fish was light and the breading was also light. Loved how they had some peppers to complement the dish. The sauteed eggplant with shrimp paste was quite tasty. Surprisingly, the flavors were quite bold, just like in SE Asia. It was on the oily side though. I had the lunch special for about $14 today. It included fried rice, stir-fry (it comes with a choice of meats but they made it vegetarian for me), some sort of spicy eggplant, and a delicious salad made from cucumber, cilantro, peanuts, and a dressing that I'd describe as vinaigrette. I *loved* the fried rice, stir fry and salad; the eggplant was OK but not great. Portions were good sized. Staff was attentive and friendly. They served me lemon water and hot water (for tea?) with lunch and said I could sit anywhere. Restrooms were nice and clean! When I asked about wonton soup, they didn't have it that day and offered seaweed soup in its place. I declined, but when they brought the meal to my table, they added the seaweed soup for free. It did not suit my taste, but it was very kind of them to offer. Although we seemed to communicate well, there may be a slight language barrier - I asked for a Coke and they said that they didn't have any. When I sat down at my table, though, I saw a glass-door fridge with Coke, Heineken and other drinks for purchase. I happened to stop into Grandma's because my car broke down and I decided to eat lunch there while waiting for the tow truck to arrive. It was a nice break from an otherwise stressful day. For our hungry party of three, we ordered the Fish Fillets with Tofu ($15.95), Grilled Cauliflower with Smoked Pork ($13.95), Stir-Fried Rice with Smoked Pork, Spicy Chicken (forgot the exact name, but in pinyin it's "La Zi Ji"). Fish Fillets with Tofu (5/5) was soft, yummy, and seasoned well (not salty). The Grilled Cauliflower (4/5) was also delicious, though I wished that they adjusted the seasoning to account for the saltiness of the smoked pork. The Stir-Fried Rice (5/5) had great "wok hei". The Spicy Chicken (4/5) was good though I would try something else next time. Price (5/5) Entrees range from $15-20, reasonable given the portion size. Wait Time (5/5) Came for a weekday dinner around 530pm and it was empty. It filled up a bit afterwards. Service (4/5) Service was good, they were fairly attentive. We were seated a little aways from the server area but they were managed to provide everything we needed for the most part. Also appreciated that they didn't check-in on us too much during dinner. Ambiance (4/5) No concerns, clean and well-it. There's lots of tables and seats available. Parking/Access (5/5) Parking lot in front. There's plenty of parking available nearby. Ok a few things to clear up right from the start... We went their website and clicked on Place Order Now. This takes you to the Beyond Menu site. We order and are told to pick up in 35 mins. When we picked it up, they have a hard time finding the order (eventually do), tell me not to order that way next time, and give me a card with a QR code to use next time. Umm, change your web site? The food was salty and seemed to have MSG. Other Yelpers claim you should put "special requests" like less salt, no msg, no peanuts, etc in the comments. Wish I'd seen that beforehand. Warning: I was thirsty for hours afterwards. On to the food... Deep fried chicken wings: spicy! And a gazillion peppers. Wings themselves were crunchy with a decent taste but too spicy for me. Mongolian Chicken: also spicy but not as bad. The chicken was kinda mushy -- maybe from the MSG. We found a small bone so at least we know it's real chicken. Kung Pao Chicken: you expect this to be spicy but it was actually less spicy than the Mongolian ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I like this dish the best. Napa Cabbage with Fried Tofu: messy and unremarkable. pass Pork fried rice: flakes rather than chunks of pork. Fried rice was good. Wow. The food was amazing... amazingly bad! Can't believe the good reviews. We got takeout and here is the breakdown: 1. Fried salty and pepper fish - the batter was literally sweet and tasted like what you would use for funnel cake. Super thick 2. Shredded Pork with Garlic Salt - tasted ok at first, but was too sweet so the more you ate it, the more disgusting it became 3. Stir fried Beef with Green onions - the flavor was ok, but the beef was so low quality with many pieces that we couldn't even chew. 4. Gandma's stir fried rice with smoked pork - all I could taste was smoke...not pleasant for fried rice. 5. Stir Fried Seasonal Vegetables with minced garlic - this was ok. I went to Grandma's Kitchen for lunch on a weekend afternoon. The restaurant wasn't very crowded, so we were seated right away, and the service was fairly quick. We ordered three dishes. The first was a steamed tofu and fish dish, but it was rather bland and lacked the fresh flavor you'd expect from fish; we left about half of it uneaten. The second dish was a smashed eggplant with chili, which was quite oily. Guests are supposed to crush the ingredients in a clay pot themselves, but the pot was small and hard to work with. 1st time last time! We placed our order as we heard it was the place to eat. Wrong we received two wrong dishes. They forgot chop sticks, sauces, plates etc. Food was greasy. Seafood soup was tasteless with tofu pieces chopped beyond morsel bites. Our group of 4 ordered stinky tofu, suan cai yu, and malaxiangguo and everything was good. I especially liked the black stinky tofu and the suan cai yu. Of course, prices are not cheap, but that's eating anywhere in the bay. We had plenty of leftovers as well so I consider this decently fair. I have been on the look out for a GOOD Chinese-styled steamed fish and this place had a lot of good reviews. Upon arrival, there was a big crowd of people waiting to be seated. Seems to be really popular on the weekends. I scanned a QR code inside and ordered on 39miles. Definitely order ahead because they estimated 30 minutes for pickup orders. I ordered the Steamed Fish Fillets with Tofu. It comes in a huge aluminum tray and it seems to be steamed in a light soy sauce. The dish is overall very simple and easy to eat. My husband and I are obsessed with the fish fillet and tofu & their Grandma's fried rice with smoked pork, and would order it via DD for delivery at least once a month. We noticed that their portions have reduced quite a bit since they first opened, but I guess with inflation they need to either increase their price or reduce their portion to stay competitive. Don't expect a lot, but expect quality and flavor :) read more

This place is definitely less well known and slightly more difficult to find but it absolutely delivers. The overall interior is cute and peaceful and the service is good. I personally love twice-cooked pork, especially when it is served in a pot where the flame continues to run. The flavor of the pork fat that gets rendered in the pot permeates into the cauliflower and makes the entire dish taste excellent. This restaurant captures the essence of the dish. Their fried rice is also a cut above the rest. I'm not sure how they do it, but it certainly has more flavor than restaurants elsewhere. All meats that we ordered (I don't remember what they were called) were very good as well. I'd say this is a very accurate representation of Hunan food. It is authentic and delicious. I've come here a few times with my family and we always order different dishes. Parking is easy. Sometimes the actual lot in front of the restaurant gets full, but there is a parking lot across the street that has plenty of spots. It's never super busy when we go, which is nice. Ordering is always very easy and food comes out fast and hot! I honestly can't remember the specific dishes we've ordered, but what I do remember is that everything is always so salty. Don't get the steamed egg tofu with ground pork and sprouts, because actual dish does NOT match with the picture on digital menu, which looks silky in texture. This dish came in late, with mushy, rough and unappetizing presentation and tasted coarse and weird. It costs an outrageous $19, totally not worth it and a huge disappointment! Other dishes are fine, but the chilli fish fillets was meager having only few meats scattering on surface to look copious. Service was average, even though they unnecessarily refilled water that we already have, and dropped water pitcher loud on table, not a gentle practice in dining environment. Extremely casual spot that seemed unusually empty on a Saturday night, but I'm very glad we held onto as it's a great place for Chinese comfort foods from a variety of regions that holds back on the salt (cause Grandma cares about your blood pressure). Expect plain décor and simple, but reasonably fast service. Grandma's Kitchen is a very appropriate name. Ordering had us use their online system with a QR code at the table that gets sent straight back to the kitchen quickly enough (they even came to ask us if we actually wanted rice within a minute since I forgot to put it in the order). Everything was decadent and I wish I had stomach space to order more. We settled on some kou rou (steamed pork slices, AKA gloriously fatty pork belly), some stir fried long beans, and stir fried lamb. This place is actually remarkably lighter on the salt by default than other chinese spots I've been to (in a very home-style kind of way), but still very delicious and comforting. However, do note that the stir fried lamb really does not hold back on the chili peppers (a lovely three pepper mixture of spicy greens, reds, and pickled peppers), so those without spicy tolerance be warned. :) read more

Shrimps with crispy rice cracker - 4/5 - the rice cracker at the bottom soaks up the chili oil from the prawns. Surprisingly this wasn't too spicy, was very salty but still tasty. Boiled beef in chili oil - 4/5 - omg just looking at the dish, I knew my lips and insides were gonna burn. No regrets though, beef was very tender, and mix it all together with rice for a tasty meal! We came just after opening at 11 and our food came out quickly, except for the pork belly which took about half an hour. When we tried the first bite, we both went "WOW~" The flavors are masterfully crafted and complex (no dish is one-note in flavor like most Chinese restaurants), the menu is unique (I've never seen some of the items, who else offers Chicken Gristle with Pistachios??), the ingredients are fresh, and the portions are generous! We discovered this place on Doordash and now it's our new favorite Chinese restaurant! Yay! Here's what we ordered: - Sliced Potatoes with Spicy and Sour Sauce - LOVE - this was the first dish that made us go WOW. If you've eaten this before, you'll instantly taste the superiority of this chef over the other restaurants. The flavors are complex and the spiciness isn't one-note, omg it's so good! Usually an appetizer portion at other restaurants, this one is a full entree-sized portion - Stone Bowl Soft Tofu with Toro Beef - LOVE - mic drop. Seriously the best thing I've eaten in a long time, I've never seen this on any other menus. The sauce looks super spicy but it's not, it's so good to where we're drinking it like soup. The flavor is like a mild amazing mapo sauce or slightly like a sloppy Joe flavor. The beef is just fatty enough (like in a Yoshinoya bowl or sukiyaki) and the tofu is soft and high-quality -Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce - LOVE - my SO loves this dish so we've ordered this from countless places. SO GOOD. Compared to others, this is sweet and not spicy Enoki Mushrooms with Shredded Tofu - LOVE - Another unique menu item. The flavor was so good and the shredded tofu is texturally interesting to good. I didn't really see much enoki in it though Spicy and Sour Soup - LOVE - Usually called Hot and Sour soup on other menus, this was solid as well Crispy Green Chive and Pork Roll - GOOD - I've never seen this before! Fresh chives wrapped inside fried bean curd rolls. Not sure where the pork comes in Healthy Pork Meatball (Steamed with Multigrain) - NOT BAD - I've never seen this on any other menu either so I was curious to try it. It tastes like the meat filling of a Xiao long bao (soup dumpling) mixed with some multigrain, with a slightly sweet blended sauce (I'm guessing kabocha pumpkin?). Had some major cravings for sweet & sour pork and consulted my trusted Yelp crew. My girl, Cherylynn gave her thumbs of approval, so I knew this would be a good choice. The hubby and I opted for the "safe" choices, and got the sweet and sour pork, combo fried rice, and Kung Pao shrimp. And boy, these were pretty good for west coast Americanized Chinese food. Probably the best we've had thus far in the Bay Area. The sweet and sour pork came in small strips and without the usual pineapple and bell peppers. But the flavor was on point and the breading was nice and crispy. The fried rice was a total win! There were 3 shrimp, several huge chunks of super tender chicken and beef. I really enjoyed it, as well, just wish it had more beef. I didn't try the shrimp, but my hubby gave it two thumbs up. Grandma did us right. read more

It's Christmas Day, which of course means Chinese food day as well. In any other year, we'd normally hit up the folks pushing carts at dim sum, but during this prolonged Covid-19 era that tradition was foiled. So on to plan B. We were specifically looking for breaded fish fillets that we normal get from one of the nearby grab-n-go places, but we decided to see if we could find someplace new. When I came across this restaurant's page, I was pleased to see that a familiar person whose reviews I trust was the the first to review. She gave it a glowing review so I knew that this was the place to go. I saw the message on the restaurant's Yelp page that orders placed directly with the restaurant would get a 15% discount. However, it was a little difficult to figure out exactly how to do it. The link on Yelp goes through GrubHub, of course, so that wasn't the way to go. I found the restaurant's web page (which doesn't seem to appear on its Yelp page as I write this review), but the link to order online goes through a different third-party platform and it wasn't clear that I would get the discount if I made my way all the way to the end. Thankfully, Cherylynn's review mentioned the QR code, and after hunting around on the Yelp page I was able to find it, place my order, and snag the 15% discount. I placed a delayed order for about 2 hours later. Thirty minutes before pickup time, I got a text providing me with an updated order time, which allowed me to time my departure appropriately. Pickup was smooth; our food was ready at the promised time. Full Covid-19 safety protocols were in place during pickup. And now, onto the food: Crispy green chive and pork roll - I saw Cherylynn's picture and knew I had to get it. I love tofu skin rolls, and this was a really good preparation. They retained their crispiness even after being packed in a to-go container. They are a bit on the oily side because of the way they are cooked, but the flavor was excellent. Salt and pepper fish fillets - good sized cuts of whitefish (not sure about the fish; could have been tilapia or swai), lightly breaded and fried. Light, flaky, and moist - just what we were looking for. Griddled pork ribs - I can't say that I've ever seen a "griddled" section of a Chinese menu before. It evoked images of a traditional American breakfast of flapjacks and sausage patties. Not knowing what this was, we decided to give it a try. This turned out to be a rather spicy dish, which wasn't indicated on the menu. But maybe that's the norm for griddled Chinese dishes? Anyways, the heat level was just a tad higher than we preferred, so we enjoyed this a little less than we had hoped. The pork ribs were nice and meaty though. Three flavor dumpling - pork, shrimp, and chive. Very tasty, each with a generous amount of filling. These were steamed, but I think they would have done well as a potsticker as well. That's not a complaint, but rather an observation, as we really enjoyed this dish. So, this was a very fine first experience. I would suggest to the proprietors that they include a guide to spiciness of their dishes so that others aren't caught unawares like us. read more
