The fish all tasted pretty fresh but the rice was a bit hard, cold, and separated. Still tasted good but with its amazing reviews I expected just a little more. Great spot for sushi takeout on Piedmont! Ebiko is a small shop where you can buy two things: fresh sushi/nigiri and Japanese snacks. There's no seating inside, but there is a small bench outside. I stopped by Friday right around noon and it was a bit busy with folks grabbing their lunch. The selection of sushi was good. Prices are reasonable given the freshness of the sushi. I got the salmon avocado roll for $8.50 and omakase nigiri for $16.99, which comes with 7 pieces of nigiri: 2x salmon, akami (lean tuna), chutoro, otoro, scallop, and ikura. To give you an idea, some of their other selection with prices are salmon aburi nigiri ($11.50 for 5 pieces), salmon roll ($6.50), California roll ($6.99). They also offer seaweed salad for $3.50 and miso soup for $3.99. They have some vegetarian options as well, such as cucumber and avocado rolls and inari sushi. What they don't have are the Americanized rolls you find at restaurants, such as Rainbow roll, Caterpillar roll, Spider roll, etc. I picked up the sushi for the road and ate it a couple hours later in the car. The store is very organized and clean! I saw some bagged food so assuming they're also on doordash (PSA Oakland folks!) We looked at their vast selection and decided on omakase, chutoro bowl, small uni bowl, seaweed salad and the salmon aburi. As we pay, they asked if we wanted chopstick and soy sauce. Had to get the tsukemono pickles again because for a few bucks, it satisfies a specific craving for salty, tangy, sour morsels of radishes and cucumbers! But Ebiko got such good reviews I thought I'd give it a try. The good reviews are justified. I've had sushi in Japan. I even ate fugu sashimi in Osaka. It's pufferfish that can only be prepared by a sushi chef who's trained for several years. That's because the fish contains a lethal poison, concentrated in the liver, that must be avoided. While the sushi at Ebiko isn't as exciting as fugu, it's very fresh and delicious and won't kill you. They offer a nice variety to choose from and it's ideal for a quick sushi fix. I'm pretty sure it wasn't through friends, and while it's possible I just stumbled across them on Yelp, I feel like it was probably from all of those hours on Instagram, which is how I seem to learn about a lot of places as of late. Regardless of HOW they made their way onto my Yelp bookmarks, though, it's easy to see WHY. I mean, have you seen the photos of their sushi yet?? A thousand words, friends...a thousand words. Now, when you first step inside, it may not seem like there's anything particularly amazing going on here. Don't get me wrong - it's a quaint shop on Piedmont with a very cute aesthetic. It's just that with only a couple of shelving racks of chips and snacks, a modestly sized drink fridge, and a refrigerated display unit with sushi and cold food, it may not seem like they have a lot to choose from. However, you would be oh so wrong!
