There always seems to be a wait at Ebisu, but it's worth it. When I came here recently, the favorite thing I ordered was the scallop sushi roll. It was tasty and had an excellent texture. I wasn't too impressed with the lobster dynamite because it was mixed with something else that concealed the lobster flavor and texture. The inside of the restaurant is nice and cozy. Space is a little bit tight because the tables are close to each other. However, you are far enough away from other people that their conversations do not bother you. read more

I walked into Ebisu for sushi but what I got was a full on love affair with fish and my BFF Kyle the sushi chef who is basically the equivalent of a warm miso soup hug honestly the whole restaurant when you walk in is the equivalent to a warm miso soup hug. The sushi chefs are sushi super hero's with capes with the best recommendations. I'm convinced they are all sushi psychics. All the staff makes you feel like you are a part of the ebisu family not just coming for dinner. The service is the best and the food is soo yummy!! Mandatory always get the crunchy roll I'm considering proposing to it, sorry Kyle. Kyle also recommended we try the nigiri featured in the picture it was so buttery it melted on my tongue like it was auditioning for a Michelin star in my mouth. Saw that it was highly reviewed so stopped by for lunch. Omakase: I got the Omakase sashimi which is 15 pieces of sashimi selected by the chef. I was under the impression that it would be 15 different fishes but it was 15 pieces where 3 pieces of 5 different fishes. The texture of the fish was too mushy and required more chewing than what I would have expected for sashimi. The fish also had a bit of an odor and did not seem that fresh. 2/5 Service: The servers were extremely nice and attentive to our needs. 5/5 I think the rolls were more popular here so maybe that's why Ebisu is highly rated. But for the quality of fish we were served, I wouldn't recommend this spot. read more

Great prices for high-quality fish. My friend who lives in the area brought me here for dinner on a Thursday, and we were seated at the sushi bar within 20 minutes of arriving. It's a small, but comfortable space off 9th Avenue in Inner Sunset. We started with the Ebisu Sake Flight, which was great - you get to taste 3 sakes off their menu. We also ordered the Nasu Dengaku (eggplant with miso glaze) as an appetizer. The eggplant was very salty (probably from the miso), but it was a good portion and was very creamy. I ordered the Chirashi, and my friend ordered the Romeo & Juliet specialty roll. The Chirashi was delicious and came packed with lots of sashimi. I thought it was good quality, especially for the price ($25) relative to other spots in SF. Ebisu was great for a casual dinner. I'd love to come here again. read more

Date night! We tried this restaurant for the first time for dinner. They don't take reservations, so you sign up on a clipboard when you arrive. It's a small, cozy space, and we only had to wait 15 minutes on a Wednesday. Our server, Nori, was excellent. We ordered a few yummy appetizers, like seaweed salad, edamame, and shrimp tempura. The hand rolls were great, with fresh, crispy seaweed--there's nothing worse than old, chewy seaweed! We also loved the "chef's choice", and my favorite was the Romeo/Juliet roll. I have been looking for a good sushi place in SF and think I've maybe found the one! Came on a weekday evening and were seated promptly (note that they don't take reservations). Ordered the sashimi platter called "omakase" and the 49er roll which really pleasantly surprised me with the lemon slices. Overall I just loved how fresh the fish was! The only negative I'll mention was the service - our server seemed frazzled and rushed - when it came time to pay she set down the card reader at our table and left, as if she was expecting me to input my own bill! Wanted to try this place so we got take out and went to pick it up. When we ordered at 5:30pm it said it wouldn't be ready till 6:30PM They must be busy. My sister went in to get the food since parking is really bad on 9th Ave. She said inside was a mad house. So crowded and the place is tiny. Not very organized. It took awhile just to get our food. I had to circle the block a couple of times and she finally came out with the food. She got the salmon bento box with California roll. It was ok. I got the deluxe sushi plate with 8 pieces of sushi. It was good. Most of the fish was fresh but the unagi was not. I don't know what they did to it but it was hard and you know unagi is soft. Oh well maybe better next time. I've came here to eat twice now and first time was pretty good, but the second time...just horrible. First time: ambiance and food was pretty good but service didn't meet my expectations. There was a wait time since there was a few people ahead of us and the guy host was pretty nice and helpful at first, gave good vibes. But then after we got seated there was ZERO servers who checked up on us. Nobody asked if the food was good, if we needed more water, if we needed anything. They just give the food and leave. But I'm the type of person who will mainly care about the food and to me - I ordered the omakase, miso soup, tempura - all of that was pretty good so I didn't trip about it. HOWEVER. Second time: since the food was pretty good we brought our friends and family to try it out since they like sushi and Japanese food. Once we got seated the flies would not stop bothering us. They were small flies that just kept swarming around the place and our table. I'm kind of a germaphobe so this was a big no no for me because they were getting on our food as well. We asked the server if we could move to the back tables but no accommodation was made. I felt kind of disgusted eating my food (raw fish and flies like cmon) and disappointed at myself for recommending this place to my peers because they didn't love it either. It was really annoying to deal with that and honestly we didn't experience this the first time so idk what happened. Hopefully the restaurant can do better and fix the issues because I wanted to like this place but that definitely ruined our experience and we are mostly likely never coming back here. read more

The sushi was okay. I had high expectations due to the number of good ratings. I ordered 3 rolls and was disappointed to see how soggy the rice was. The rainbow roll was interesting. It usually doesn't contain tempura but this one does. The cherry blossom roll was disappointing. I put a comparison photo so you know what I mean. The 49er was the best out of the three rolls because it tastes exactly how I expected: citrus on salmon. As always, parking was difficult to find on a Saturday. I've been going here for years and I've watched it decline, not only in the quality of food but also in their service. Its very common to be served by unsmiling faces which makes for a bad meal. The hosomaki rolls used to be worth it. The king crab rolls actually had lumps of crab, today its shreds with shells, the ume shiso had no shiso, the natto maki were all fallen apart with the natto on the plate instead of in the roll and the rice was ice cold in all the rolls. I spent close to 200 bucks on a a carry out order some time ago and they gave me 3 packs of soya sauce which is pretty much needed to create the wasabi mix. They did the same for my next order which was also over 50 bucks because I thought I would give them another chance. When I asked for some more soya sauce packets, they didn't seem too happy at all. The last time I was in the restaurant dining in, I had to ask like 5 times to get some tea. The rolls were so tiny and falling apart. What is going on Ebisu? Have you forgotten the meaning of customer service? Please go back to how you were. I am paying for king crab, not king crab shreds and shells if that is even king crab. Keep your staff happy because they look so sad and angry and that makes for such a bad dining experience. Ume shiso isn't right with a quarter or less of a shiso leaf. Natto maki should have the natto in the roll and not all over my plate with the rice spilling out. Please change, be like you used to be. read more

Great sushi restaurant in SF! The sashimi was very fresh and delicious. The Hamachi Toro Nigiri was especially soft and just melted in my mouth. Although the rolls were a little small and mushy, they were very unique and tasted great. This place is also super authentic with a generations of the a Japanese family running the place! The waiters were all very nice and had great customer service; they made sure to pay attention us even though they were completely packed and had a line outside.
