The experience only sucked because Dad (our server) wanted it to :) fun lighting, music, dancing, and vibes - I can see why tourists would be intrigued to come here! While I understand that a veggie burger is not the classic item to order off the menu, it was so bad that I just cannot rank it higher. The veggie burger was served with 0 toppings and was a weird texture and flavor - cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and/or sauce probably would've helped. We came to Ed Debevics on family vacation for some fun over lunch. They were dancing when we got there which was an exciting welcome to the restaurant and my kids enjoyed it. I thought there would be more of that but that was the only performance we saw during lunch. Our waiter was fun interacting with the kids and joking about how we ordered a million phosphates. The phosphates we were really looking forward to but they weren't cold at all which was sad on a really hot day. My burger and fries were pretty decent and it was a large portion. My daughter did leave sad however when the jokes got a little personal for a 7 year old. We got a check calling her baby big head which hurt her feelings on an otherwise fun experience. read more

OMG I was there at least 15 minutes without even an attempt of being offended by the staff. I went into full "Karen" mode and was finally offended by Smokestack. IYKYK The atmosphere there is awesome! Our sever Smokestack was great as well. He made great suggestions for lunch and then at the end he told us to get lost. read more

First of all, The Swan, i love you. Second of all, this place is just as nostalgic as it has always been. The theme is on point and the food was actually good which I didn't really expect from a theme restaurant. They did a funny dance line also while we ate and it was fun to be sat right under them while doing it. The food is a little on the pricey side but i'd say worth it. Definitely a good place for a funny meal and I loved the photo booth. Just remember to eat, drink, and leave! read more

We walked by here when visiting Chicago with my family and stopped in for some traditional American / casual breakfast. I had no idea what the schtick was beforehand (i.e., lots of sass and mild verbal abuse). However, it was quite a fun experience depending on your family dynamic. It can get loud though and every few minutes, the servers all get up and dance. We were very entertained. The service is rude but that's their goal so that's probably a compliment! The food was just alright though which is why I am going with 3 stars. read more

Had a fun experience at the Chicago location, we took my nephews for our first time for breakfast on a Saturday we did make a reservation but didn't need it. The quick witted servers made the kids laugh so we enjoyed our time. Food is ok, but you go for the experience. When the hotel we're staying at is right next door of course we have to stop by for dinner. I took my kids by and we all enjoyed it.y kids ordered grilled cheese and chicken tender baskets and drank root beer. I ordered a cheeseburger with a turkey patty and a coleslaw instead of fries. Our total was $116 since gratuity was added since there was 6 of us. We were entertained by the staff and we were well taken care of with refills and our food came out fast as well. I am from Chicago and have been coming to Ed Debevic's for many years with my family. Every visit is a highlight -- we love the humor, the banter, and the playful roasting that makes this place unique. We fully understand the style here and always embrace it. This time, however, our server, listed on the receipt as "Jane calamity H", turned what should have been lighthearted fun into something hostile and uncomfortable. While Jane was dancing on stage, my son jokingly gestured that I needed a Pepsi refill -- something he would never do in a regular restaurant but has always done here as part of the back-and-forth. Out of nowhere, Jane stepped onto our table, took my drink, and yelled at him, "IT'S MY JOB TO BE MEAN, NOT YOURS!" We have this first yelling on video. She then slammed the cup down at the server station and, a few minutes later, came back and broke character entirely. In a serious tone, she said, "This is your real server talking and not in character. Before coming back to your table, I was about to throw up in the bathroom, and then I came out here to dance for you. YOU ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE MY JOB AWAY FROM ME. I DO THE INSULTS." As a mother, watching a server yell at my son like this in front of me was completely uncalled for. We all understand and respect the Ed Debevic's style, but this was not playful -- it was aggressive, personal, and unprofessional. The rest of the staff and the manager were great, but this behavior from Jane ruined the experience. We stumbled on this place in route to the Ice Cream Museum. It's schtick is retro atmosphere where they treat you badly (in a funny way). If you have thin skin- don't come here. We enjoyed the banter and giving as well as we were getting. We had the American and Hippee skillets. Both were good. Generous helping of hashbrowns as the base with the goodies on top laced together with a good amount of cheese. The biscuit was also tasty (they toast it). They also have alcohol. I knew what I was signing up for, but I was not emotionally prepared for our waitress, the legendary **B. Rat** (yes, that's her name, and no, I didn't dare ask what the B stands for). From the moment she stomped up to our table and said, *"What do you want? Make it quick, I've got actual important people to ignore,"* I knew we were in good hands. Or at least sarcastic ones. My husband really wanted to go back to this restaurant since it had been 20+ years for him. My oldest son was anxiously awaiting to be harassed by our server. His girlfriend and I on the other hand were somewhat skeptical because we do not do well with confrontation Lol. I guess I had in my mind that it was gonna be a lot worse than it actually was because our server was kind of a smart ass, but not horribly. I opted for the grilled cheese with bacon and a side salad. My sandwich was pretty good but nothing spectacular. I could have used another slice of cheese or a few different combinations of cheese to make it stand out more. I know my son enjoyed his chicken sandwich and fries because it was gone quickly. My husband enjoyed his salad, and my oldest son enjoyed his chill with pasta included. Definitely an older building, but surprisingly everything was clean and pretty well maintained. Popped into Ed Debevic's for a birthday lunch and it was like swinging back into the '50s, in the best way possible! As expected, the staff was sassy but swell--queens clad in '50s style with polka dots and saddle shoes, guys looking like greasers--and quirky attitude to boot. A total highlight was their dance performance midway through lunch--it's such a fun place! At all times, the atmosphere was buzzing away with great oldies music, party lights and laughter. Food-wise, Ed's embraces the traditional. I ordered the Chickadee, a breaded chicken breast with crunchy pickles and mayo, plus crinkle fries. Yum! Drink choices included cherry shots for your pop, and even Green River. They also sang to my young niece, and gave her one of their signature "world's tiniest sundaes" with a candle in it. I have to tell you, I used to frequent the Ed Debevics in Phoenix back in the 80's. Loved it! It's great to see that the tradition keeps doing! Had an amazing late lunch and STASH was my server! He did a great job of trying to humiliate me(if you've never been you need to go so you'll understand). He did a fantastic job! Deserves a pay raise...off his arse and on to his feet! We did not know anything about this place when we walked in. We just looked for a breakfast place close to our hotel. After about 2 mins we realized it was one of those "mean and rude" restaurants. Visited on a Monday morning for my birthday breakfast. My husband chose the spot and neither of us knew what to expect, but we were both pleased with the decision. I loved the sarcastic attitudes of the waiters, which was light and fun and not over the top. They even performed a sarcastic filled dance. We ordered water and mimosas. For my meal I ordered The Hippie skillet with no cheese and a biscuit. My husband ordered the Tex Mex skillet with a biscuit. Food came out pretty quickly and the serving size was a nice proportion, we had to get a to-go box. Food was good and seasoned well.
