Lovely inn right in downtown bar harbor. Room felt very clean and shower had good water pressure too! Water, coffee, community fridge, and mugs/glasses are all offered. My axiom for bed and breakfast lodging-- "One man's quaint is another man's dump"-- is NOt the case at Central House, which passed with flying colors. It has old school charms but also modern conveniences. First off, the location: unless you snag an oceanfront room at one of the most expensive hotels in town, you really can't do any better. And aside from view, I'd argue that Central House IS better, being walkable to the shops, the three best breakfast places in town, and some of the better restaurants. Inside, you get an antique look along with air conditioning and a TV set. The room and bathroom are clean. The bed is comfortable. There's a porch with rockers, a common kitchen (no breakfast, but that's right down the street), and a really cool common setting room with its own library. Parking is no problem. The manager is very friendly. Prices change with the season, but I found the value to be very good. My wife and I would easily stay here again. read more

I stayed here for 3 nights with my wife on a Sunday - Wednesday visit to Bar Harbor. My wife and I arrived to the Central house at 2 PM hoping for an early checkin but read that check in was from 3 - 7 PM and didn't want to push our luck. So we wandered around Bar Harbor for an hour until it was check in time and headed back. Whenever you walk into the Central House they have a phone that you can call the worker on which was nice because their office is all the way at the back of the building. Check in was quick and rather pleasant. Whenever the person checking us in asked if we wanted a quick orientation of Bar Harbor we agreed and she pointed out a lot of things on a map for us. The room that I had picked was on the 3rd floor and there were no elevators to take up your suitcases. I am not saying that this is a problem, but something to be aware of if you have a lot of luggage or trouble with stairs. Our room number was 302 and ended up having a lovely king sized bed and two large windows and a flat screen TV. You couldn't miss the red wallpaper on the walls but that made it feel more authentic as the house was clearly pretty old. Our bathroom was en suite and pretty massive for our sized room. Neither my wife nor I had any problems with anything here the 3 nights that we stayed. There was some ambient noise at times that I could hear in our room but in places like this that's to be expected and embraced. Amenity wise, they had a lovely porch out front with plenty of cushioned seating which my wife and I took advantage of one night by bringing dinner back and eating it there. There also had a room inside where you could eat and it had a Keurig with all sorts of coffee and tea K cups available at any time you wanted. Our course I couldn't finish this review without mentioning that it's location is amazing! You can walk anywhere you want in Bar Harbor which is amazing. They also have parking spots for all of the guests and so you don't need to worry about that either. The bottom line for me is that I would definitely stay here again in the future. Massive Victorian that is very well taken care of. We have a room on the 3rd floor, facing out front towards the street. Room was VERY clean and quiet! They have a sitting area with a refrigerator for guest use, coffee, tea, Keurig so you can bring your own favorite kcups as well! The Central House feels more like a small inn than a bed and breakfast. First, it's far larger than the average B&B. We were on the second floor and there were at least eight rooms on that floor alone. Secondly, no breakfast. You can't be a B&B without breakfast! Even as a small inn, The Central House shines. Our room was spacious and clean. The decor feels like an older house (minus any associated mustiness) - like sleeping upstairs in your Grandma's house. Location is perfect - a block to Main Street with all the shopping and restaurants. Additionally, Cottage Street Bakery is right across the street. We enjoyed grabbing breakfast there and eating it on the beautiful patio at The Central House. While breakfast is not included, they give you a $10 gift card to Geddy's for each night of your stay. Additionally, there is always tea and coffee in the lounge downstairs. The sparkling gem at the center of The Central House is Sarah, one of the managers. My family was in flight from a frightful experience at a nearby B&B, and Sarah drew us in with her warmth and friendliness. I'd stay at any B&B she managed. read more

Just got back from a long weekend in Bar Harbor and the Central House was the perfect choice! Our room (206) was spacious with a large bathroom, and very quiet (located at the rear of the house.) The bed was incredibly comfortable and the room was adorable (the headboard is made of reclaimed doors - so cool!) The innkeepers are friendly and the house itself is filled with cool art, board games and most importantly great coffee in the morning! It is very centrally located just a two minute walk to the center of town, with tons of great restaurant options just seconds away. I can't recommend the Central House highly enough! First time visiting the New England area and we booked our trip ourselves through a national travel site.. (starts with a "T" and ends with a "y") . Our objective was good prices at quality places. So, we really came to Bar Harbor blindly trusting reviews and hoping for the best.......We found it at the Central House. It is in the perfect location for the city..... easy walking along Cottage Street, a main street through the quaint town. A great little bakery/ restaurant right across the street and everything just a couple minutes walk away....really! The house is charming and like previous posts it's more like a little 'inn" rather than a B&B. The owners are wonderfully sweet and are on property, but they and their staff stay out of your way and keep a beautiful place. This is our second morning of our 15th wedding anniversary trip, so it's a vacation you want to remember. I'm sitting in the sunroom (because it's 50degrees outside) soaking up the rays and having a great cup of coffee. They have a Keurig machine with at least 16 different varieties of coffee, tea and hot chocolate. No breakfast, but the Cottage Street Bakery is right out the front door. Easy access to area sites and attractions: the harbor, whales watching, MaryTodd windjammer cruise, the sand bar, museums, all the great restaurants and shoppes just around the corner, so to speak. The previous reviews i read on here all all on point, so definitely read those. Ok, now after gushing over everything, let me share a couple things you should be prepared for being in a harbor town. Its the end of the "season" so things need to be painted and worked on. Some of the porch is due for a rebuild. This is a landmark, turn of the century house, so if you are expecting the Trump Tower you will be disappointed, but if you are looking for charming, quiet, clean and comfortable....... you found the place. oh, and when you see the cat-door in the back, be assured there are no cats or pets. Thanks to the three yelpers who posted reviews already - after I read your reviews I felt comfortable making my reservation. The price for this Inn was so low (and available with 3 days notice) that I was actually thinking that something might be wrong with the place! The price was half of what B&Bs charge. Sure, they don't serve breakfast, but the price seemed too good to be true. Over Memorial Day Weekend we paid $65 a night and it included a $10 gift card to Geddy's for each night. We stayed in Room 304 and it was great! Sure it was small and on the third floor, but it was cute and had everything we needed. It was clean, comfy bed, TV, free wireless, free coffee and tea and a great, great location. Breakfast would be nice - but there are millions of convenient places to get some breakfast nearby. I will stay here again next time! Note: No children allowed. Good if you don't have kids, but bad for me now that I have one. I'll have to find a new place for next year! read more

We stayed there during the 4th July weekend and loved the place. We had our room on the 1st floor and felt that we heard too much street noise. Next time, we'll try to book it in advance and try to get one of the rooms on the 2nd floor. Pros: The location as the name suggests is very "central" to all the activity. I waited a while until I decided to finally post my review, and to this day I am unsure what to make of this place. Let's start with the good stuff first. Bar Harbor is expensive, and if you cannot (like me) afford a waterfront hotel, this is probably where you will end up. Rooms are affordable for local standards, and the place really lives up to its name: as central as it gets. There is a fridge in the kitchen downstairs that every guest can use, as well as a Keurig with tons of coffee and tea choices (for free!). There was an a/c unit in the room, which was convenient because it was a hot day. I think this is all the good stuff I am able to say for now. We arrived around noon after driving in from Boston, but check-in was not until 3pm. I've showed up at hotels early my entire life, and not once was not able to check in prior to the official check in time. The innkeeper was in her office the whole time, wandered around the house, looked at us, but simply did not check us in. I don't know why, because she did see us and another couple hanging around the porch, clearly waiting for her. This really annoyed me to no end. I'd understand if she was not in the office until 3, but she was, and we were her guests, and pretty much everyone had spent their day in a car to get there, and just wanted to bring their bags inside, and check in. Nope. 3pm it was, on the dot, and the innkeeper acted all surprised when she finally opened the door and saw her guests waiting outside on the porch. The place is old, and in my opinion could have been much cleaner. I was kind of afraid to walk around the room barefoot. There was a hairball in the bathroom from previous guests, and the rooms seemed like they came out of a curiosity shop. Nothing matches, and there was simply no storage. No closet, no nightstand, no dresser, you basically need to live out of your suitcase the entire time. I was pretty creeped out, and I'm not spoiled by any means. It kind of felt like a haunted house and I was not comfortable there. Again, 3 stars for this review because like I said, very centrally located, and affordable for Bar Harbor standards. If I ever return, I will not stay there again though. read more

It's perfectly located on the edge of the main area so it was easy to walk everywhere. Was clean and accommodating. The house was built in the late 1800's so it has that charm and feel that I really enjoyed. Its rooms are large and very comfortable. Nice greeting. I was able to check the in an hour early. I love the room I picked. Beth showed me other rooms too for a future stay. I like checking out other rooms. My room had a nice window view and a cozy bed with a ceiling fan above. The night air was chilly but I lov air movement in the room. Nice porch downstairs to check out peeps walking brand to eat the snacks I brought. There is a fridge you can put your stuff in and that's always nice. Plus tea and coffee provided. So if you are staying here it's because you can't afford the luxury accommodations around Bar Harbor (or you are super frugal). So here's the deal: this is the best value you will get in town. It's clean and quaint and cheap. Your bath will look like the 1980s (but again, it's super clean) and your bed will feel like a rock (again, very clean and not an ancient mattress), but everything was clean and nice and Beth is great. So book it if you want the best value you can get on the island for the best location and best price. And if you want more comfort and amenities then pay more somewhere else. But at this price point you can't possibly do better. read more

We were on the 3rd floor, quite a hike but not a problem for us. The room was spacious and included an air conditioner. Very Clean! I recommend this place highly, great value and close to everything. The coffee/tea setup was perfect because there are many breakfast and bakery places around. Loved the Geddy card, that was pure bonus! My stay at Central House was everything I needed it to be. A very comfortable mattress, hot shower,clean room, quiet and walking distance to the cafes and waterfront in Bar Harbor. I stayed on the 3rd floor but the stairs were not a problem. The room was larger than it appeared in the photo. I was a solo traveler and I felt safe. I enjoyed coffee on the porch in the morning and visited the cafe across the street for breakfast. read more

As long as you go into this place realizing that it's an inn and not a bed and breakfast, it's quite nice. It's not as if there isn't great breakfast food around Bar Harbor anyway! Fiancé and I stayed on the third floor, and we enjoyed our time there--I was able to get hot water for my tea, and the wi-fi was surprisingly fast! This is very important nowadays, so I give them props for having great wi-fi even on the third floor of the inn. The first floor common rooms are quite lovely, the staff is friendly, and as another Yelper pointed out, it's in a great location in town. Reasonable prices as well. read more

this was our third stay at the central house. we have been coming to bar harbor frequently over the last 4 years, and this is by far our favorite place to stay. the inn keepers, jamie & jerry, provide the perfect balance between privacy & friendliness. fresh coffee in the morning, beautiful clean rooms, great price, free wi-fi, welcoming common areas, & located right in downtown area. we also love the huge porch, where we sit each night. read more
