The people who know me best would certainly agree - I Am a GOOD eater! Not a food snob, as most of my favorite places tend to be casual, smokey, and often out of the way, and most importantly FUN.
When my friends found out I was going to visit Cabo for a week, the restaurant recommendations came fast and furious, for they all know how much I love me some Mexican food.
As a result, there were three names that kept coming up - "if you can possibly get reservations."
#1. Edith's
#2 Office on the Beach
#3. El Farallon
Well OK. To accomplish the impossible reservations, I turned to my most treasured asset, my wife, Lori. NOBODY can say no to her, even when she learned that two of the three would close for the season during the week we were to visit!
First up - Edith's. We managed to get a perfect table for two during peak dining hours 6:45 pm on the LAST DAY OF THE SEASON!! and without a moments hesitation we were warmly welcomed, introduced to the waitstaff, and shown a huge tray of all the fresh fish, lobster, steaks, and shrimp dishes they had to offer. No rush, no stress, the presentation concluded with "or any special dish you desire."
Music to my ears. I asked for some time to peruse the menu and take in the wonderful ambiance. For a full ten minutes we chatted and took a few pictures of the enormous palapa with native palm trees, hibiscus and flowering vines providing the "walls" that provided a perfect and natural barrier to the streets around us. It was both airy and intimate, and the gentle breeze kept the temperature ideal as the sun set and the beaches came alive with nightlife.
When we finally decided on an entree of chili rellenos and a corn chowder in a bread bowl for the appetizer, I only had to glance in the direction of Alfredo, standing politely eight feet away, and he immediately stepped forward to take the order. By the time we finished the complimentary tostada with four selections of salsa, pico, and verde sauces, the appetizers arrived.
We savored the unique flavors and shared bites of every morsel for another ten minutes - extraordinary.
Another quick glance brought Alfredo back to the table offering the menus, removed our used plates, and returning to his post until we discussed every possible choice of entrees and glanced his way again.
I mention these details to point out that our head waiter knew that we were looking to spend at least two hours in his company and expected a culinary experience. He never rushed us for a moment and was as perfectly accommodating as he could be - On the last night of the season, and a packed house!!
I loved that.
Lori ordered chicken enchiladas, and I, the beef enchiladas - the most basic of Mexican dishes. I always want to see if as much attention is paid to the preparation and presentation of the basics as the specialty of the house. Once again, perfection. Incredibly light corn tortillas. Delicately stuffed with lean meats, a touch of spice, and just a hint of cilantro, garnished with slivers of onion and crumbles of cheese. Very balanced and complimented with the amazingly fresh sauces of your choice at the table. Savory, delicious, incredible.
I know this is long, but please indulge me.
Alfredo must have noticed the tear in my eye, for he returned with a confident smile and detailed the dessert menu options and his personal recommendations. Baked corn pudding with vanilla ice cream in a spun sugar globe for the wife and the banana flambeau (prepared table side with a show stopping flare) for the big guy.
Yes we did, thank you.
Accompanying dessert was the table side Mexican coffee I just could not live without. What a show!
Our trip to Edith's was, without doubt, the very best dining experience of our lifetime. Honestly! We both even agreed on this point. Our bill? Just over $110.00 US. Plus a 50% gratuity, just because of the greatness of the experience! Cannot wait to go back. read more
