It was Thursday late afternoon when I called them, and they said they could squeeze me in on Friday plus offered a free loaner car while my truck was being serviced! I'm like really? I have NO idea if these guys are any good or not. Called about an electrical problem with my 1927 Model T Ford. After several days of no returned calls/emails I was finally told "No one here has any idea how to work on that car.". A Model T has the SIMPLEST electrical system--especially since some of the archaic system has been replaced with a more modern system. We really appreciated working with Jerry and his team at Crown Hill Automotive. They are a pretty unique shop with an amazing staff - everyone is highly technical and very friendly. I had them do a complete brake overhaul on a Jeep Renegade. They were able to fit us in timely and educated us throughout the process. I've been back to visit since for another very small tire issue and, again, they went out of their way to get us in quickly and resolve the issue. I had a terrible experience at this shop. It's hard to list everything in this post so I'll stick to the major points. (Sorry in advance for the long post...) I took my Triumph TR6 here for new fluids and an inspection after my 5-month restoration. I drove the car away after picking it up and the driver's side front tire flew off the car! Thankfully, I was in the far right lane when it happened. Someone at Crown Hill Automotive neglected to tighten the lug nuts on the wheel. The shop had it towed the car back to their shop. The right front fender was destroyed along with various suspension parts underneath the car. I waited the ENTIRE next day for a phone call before I had to call the owner, Jerry, just before 5pm. Needless to say, I was very upset. He was less than understanding and even tried to skirt the blame by insinuating Les Schwab (who installed the wheels 4 months before that) had messed up. To be clear, I had driven the car regularly for months with my new tires and wheels. Also, Jerry's shop had just performed a very detailed inspection where they said they had taken the wheels off to inspect the brakes and rotors. Jerry assured me he would personally do all the work on the car and get it back in a few weeks with plenty of time before the All British Field Meet in Kenmore (6 weeks later). I received no follow up phone calls for a week until I had to call for a progress update. I spoke to Ray, who is the only positive thing I have to say about this shop. He was very nice and helpful. I spoke with him a few more times before I finally got a call from Jerry just days before the show... 6 weeks later... to tell me my car wouldn't be finished in time. He blamed the delay on his exhaustive search for a front fender. Even if that's true, he should have told me weeks before. I showed up a few days ago to pick up the car. It was covered in dust and dirt. When I complained, he reluctantly said he'd "get it wiped down". My wife and I had to wait over 20 min. because his detail guy wasn't there. I got it home but on the next day it just stalled continually and now WILL NOT RUN. It looked like it sat at the back of the shop and worked on when there was nothing else to do. I also doubt Jerry did all the work on the car. The new front fender looks terrible. The gaps are off and there's noticeable dust particles beneath the paint. They also did a terrible job reinstalling the parts they had to remove off my new interior. The volume knob of my stereo was missing until I found it under my seat the next day. There's even a screw missing on the bottom of the new quarterpanel! The whole repair looks very rushed with little to no care for detail. I've attached some pics of the fender, fog lights, and interior. If this is how things look on the surface, I am obviously fearful of the shotty work I can't see underneath. I'm very disappointed with how the car looks. But I'm even more disappointed with how Jerry has handled this whole ordeal. This was a life threatening accident that could have been MUCH worse had I decided to take the freeway instead of Rt.99. Jerry never took full responsibility, though he did say one of his mechanics was too devastated to come to work the day after the accident. Whenever I showed any kind of disappointment or frustration, he became very defensive and annoyed. I probably could have complained much more during the repair process (or even threatened to sue him) but I was fearful that it would affect the quality of work. That fear was apparently misplaced. Jerry never apologized for his colossal screw-up. And I'm sure a screw-up this massive rarely happens at his shop. But my experience showed me that he has neither the decency nor professionalism to handle it correctly when it does. DON'T take your car here for repairs. I seriously question the owner's integrity. By the way, I had to pay an additional $175 just to get the car back because of "a problem unrelated to the accident". Unbelievable. read more

Brought a car in to be serviced and repaired so it could be safely driven back cross country where I could work on it some more. $5,000 was discussed as the probable amount required for the job. $20,000 later it was quickly heading to be a $50,000 job. I purchased a Ferrari 308 GTBi which was serviced at CHA with previous owner, including not only oil/filter/tune up/brakes, but also electrical, timing belts, rods, and major service items that are impossible to do with engine in the car. You really have to know what you are doing and take the time to do it right. These were done perfectly. I asked my boss, "who does the service on your E-Type Jag", he said he has been going to CHA for decades. My best friend's TR6 has been maintained there as well. I have never been to CHA. But I've seen their work up close, so will be using them for both my Ferraris as well as the Rolls. A Ferrari/Jag/Rolls/Triumph is only as good as who serviced it last. We realize, it is a "specialty" shop, and not a 10 min oil pit stop. We appreciate a mechanic who fixes everything he sees while car is open, so we do not have to pay twice. i have seen the work orders and receipts. Good work is not free. Free work is not good. They charged the right amount, and less, for dealer type of work. read more

The guys here remind me of the obsessive mechanic in Seinfeld... kind of grouchy and defensive about servicing your car and the cost. Don't expect a smile and handshake with your service. Bottom line - if you're needing your land rover repaired it'll cost you the same as taking it to the dealer, so you might as well take it there and get the perks they offer (car wash, loaner car, waiting room, a smile or two). read more

Always friendly despite the fact that they are so busy. I've owned my '97 jeep cherokee for 9 years. I have had alignment issues ever since I put a modest lift on it 8 years ago. The jeep seemed to wander on the road at highway speeds. I have searched numerous forums and have taken it to 3 different mechanics: one general, one suspension specialist, and one off-road specialist to try to fix the road handling. No one could figure it out or they just blew it off and said it was the lift. I took it to Crown Hill and they were able to get it back to stock riding condition without having to overhaul the suspension. When it comes to cars I consider myself a needy customer - want to know the details about everything the mechanic finds, where the parts come from, etc. Crown Hill has been amenable to that. Only 5-star or 1-star, eh? Have you read the 1-star reviews? They're all cheapskates who get mad that Crown Hill doesn't have a magic wand or do things for free. One guy even complained--instead of being grateful--about them finding problems he didn't know about. Takes all kinds, I guess. Anyway, here's my experience thus far. My wife had a 2000 Jaguar S-Type with an intermittent no-start problem. For 2-3 years, no one in town could fix it, and each new Jaguar expert had the same limited set of ideas. Even the Jaguar dealership gave up. CHA heard my tale of woe and had new ideas to try. None of them worked, but that's not the point. The point is GOOD mechanics aren't just wrenchers; they're thinkers, and they try to solve puzzles. They never threw up their hands like everyone else and said "beats me". Jerry even drove the car for a week trying to get the problem to happen on his watch so he could figure out what was going on; that's dedication. The other point is that Jaguar electricals can defeat anyone. I've also taken all my Buick Roadmaster wagons there, and my mild-custom 69 Cutlass when a wheel fell off. They found plenty of other problems with that Cutlass--which has had many shade-tree mechanics (mostly me) screwing with it for four decades--and they solved them, even doing a touch of custom work themselves. Every time I go there, I see a couple cool old hobby cars. Only real car-guys welcome oldies, beater GM, AND the British. And when the 1-star reviewers say that Jerry or Todd are not nice people, then everything else those reviewers say is null & void. Everyone I've talked to there is cool. I always have questions; they always have answers. They speak in complete sentences and they don't smell bad; what more can you want from grease monkeys when it comes to people skills? They even washed my wife's Jag once just because it was dirty. (I stopped washing it when I started hating it.) Look, I don't know if they're the cheapest, but do you want to pay $80/hour for the guy who takes 2 hours, or $120/hour for the guy who takes 1 hour? Bottom line: Jerry & crew have been in the same location forever and there are always so many cars there that you can't find a place to park yours. What more do you need to know? I was looking for a shop that was open on Saturdays, because I need my car for work. When I found Crown Hill Automotive on Yelp, I called to ask if they could check out my car that weekend. I was told they'd be happy to look at it on Thursday. They gave me a free loaner car, kept me up-to-date about the repair situation and how long it would take, and treated me better than I have been for a long time at an auto shop. These guys aren't the least expensive around, but with this kind of service and good repair work I'd recommend them to anyone. read more

Had a great experience! I was in the area and thought I would randomly try this place out -- needed to get an oil change, tire rotation, general inspection. They gave me discount because I found them on Yelp, which was a great perk. They didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need, but suggested I replace my air filter. Everyone was super nice, especially Joe, who was the one to help me out. They even offered me some of the pizza they got for lunch! Friendly, competent, trustworthy folks. I will definitely be going back in the future. Also, I think they have a body shop and sell cars as well? Awful, awful AWFUL experience with this shop - the worst. As another reviewer said, are all these five stars being written by friends and relatives? Someone else alluded to the changing of the guard taking place at CHA and the fact that good service of yore has gone away. Whatever the reason, in my near half century of life on this earth, this has been one of the worst auto-repair nightmares I've experienced. I think perhaps it's, at least in small part, due to the fact that I'm female and they know they can tell me pretty much anything since it's clear that I've chosen not to use my limited cranial capacity on automotive know-how. We purchased an old Mercedes (big mistake, but that's another story) and the previous owner highly recommended CHA as the best place to have it serviced. He had a binder full of receipts going back many years so I figured that I might as well keep taking the car to this shop, since they're familiar with it. Two weeks into ownership the car won't start and, to keep the story short[er], we had it towed to CHA for repair. The bill was close to $2,000 with a laundry list of problems that were fixed. As I was paying the bill the mechanic mentioned that, oh by the way, the wipers also need to be replaced. Not sure why they didn't do it along with the other stuff but, sure, we might as well replace the wipers. Well, they not only charged me for the wipers (which I expected) but they also charge a FEE - $10 - to replace the blades, which I did NOT expect. I have never had an auto shop charge me labor to put new wipers on! And I certainly was surprised that, after spending close to $2,000 at CHA, they would charge me another $10 to replace the wipers!! A teenager who was hanging around behind the counter replaced the wipers and it took him all of three minutes. Perhaps the reason he did it so quickly is that he did it incorrectly. We had to bring the car back TWO more times just to have the wipers re-installed. (A huge hassle for people who have jobs, with all the dropping off and picking up.) For some reason they just couldn't get it right, the wipers would either fall off or hit each other. The wipers are a little tricky it this car, so I let it slide, although the increasingly annoying memory of the $10 fee should have clued me to the fact that things were not as they should be. We ALSO had to bring the car back it several more times to correct some mistakes the mechanic had made. While they didn't charge for the re-repairs, the fact that it happened (along with the wiper problem) should have been a red flag. A few weeks go by and the car starts making troublesome noises. We take it it in to CHA, albeit with a lack of enthusiasm do to the previous screw-ups and the annoying damn $10 wiper fee, and ask them to take a look at it and give us an estimate. They called later that day with an outrageous figure at which point we said, no thanks, as our old mechanic (who I had just called) said he could do it for a third of the price. We get to CHA and they tell us it'll be $100 to bail the car out, since they performed some expensive diagnostics and we had to pay for that. Excuse me? We had asked for an ESTIMATE. Isn't this sort of shenanigan illegal? When you ask for an ESTIMATE it's understood that the mechanic calls you before performing any work that costs money. Un-freekin-believable! We paid the money and got the hell out of there, not having the time and energy to make a scene. I've waited over a year to write this review, so that I could really cool my head and be fair. Nevertheless, Crown Hill Automotive ripped us off from the minute we came in, despite the fact they could have easily had a customer for life (at least the life of the car) if they had treated us fairly, as well as referrals from this happy customer. The $10 wiper install charge (I keep going back to that because it bugs me to no end) should have indicated the type of attitude they have when it comes to customer service. I wish I could give negative stars. Future customers, especially females (and I very, very rarely play the sexism card), beware! read more

I just bought a '59 Nash Metropolitan and on chance brought it in to these guys since I had seen British cars parked in their lot before. They're AWESOME. Super upfront about price and what they're doing, and incredibly skilled in dealing with older cars. They've done a TON of work on my car, and it comes with a 3-year guarantee!!!! Plus, they've had me bring it back by a couple of times to check on how things are going and have made other adjustments/minor repairs for no charge. They aren't cheap, but they're incredibly honest and their workmanship is top-notch. Free loaners, too! Between the vintage cars in the lot and the friendly staff, this is definitely my new favorite automotive shop. The prices are reasonable too! With the owner having nearly 40 years of experience and 20+ years in the area, I trust these guys. I walked in, without an appointment, on the Tuesday morning after a holiday weekend for an alignment job and not only could they fit me in, my car was on the lift before my vin number was even entered into the system. At the front desk Joe and Jerry (the owner) chatted with me while I waited for one of the many mechanics to complete the job. While fixing the alignment, the mechanic noticed a couple other issues, and not only noted them, but made sure I would get an email with the estimate of what it would cost to fix. The prices are competitive and they will work with you to determine what absolutely needs to be done now and what you can put off until later. The scope of work paid for was not done, or done correctly, it was very expensive, and they took way too long. I was able to take the cars back, and they did rectify the problems, Ray is very accomodating, but given that my time, and money, are valuable, they really need to pick up their game if they want to keep, or attract, customers. I took my beast of a car into these guys knowing it was going to be a tricky fixer upper because the previous mechanic had done less than favorable "repairs" on it previously. My schedule was difficult to work around, but they were able to accommodate to fit me in regardless, which was extremely helpful. They were also really amazing communicating everything that they were able to find, giving an estimate, and quickly ordering the parts to repair it after I gave consent to go through with the them! My car was in and out in just a little over a week and I didn't even realize how bad the damage was before I drove it again after they fixed everything on it. Are all of these 5 star reviews from friends relatives and employees???? I call and schedule to bring it in on a Friday... they said, be here at 8:00. I get there for a seemingly simple repair... Then the guy tells me as I'm walking out... we'll take a look at it next Monday!!! WTF?!?!?! Oh well whatever. The car is my sons pride and and joy... a 62 Chevy impala that needed repair of a couple of taillights and front turn signals... Get a call $14 per taillight and maybe an hour labor. My son goes to pick it up... $400... "we had to do a few other things bla bla bla". My son drives it home, and the car dies wouldn't start dead (brand new battery). He had to jump it three times to get it home (4 miles). My son calls the shop to ask WTF, and the guy was actually laughing at his experience driving home! Plus the taillights went out and the front turn signals were not repaired either!!! They convince us to take the car back, to see where the electrical short is... The car ran fine before it went there. We get the battery charged and take it back and I said to the guy "Look don't spend a lot of time on it but see what you might have screwed up so we can at least drive it home safely and I'm not about to pay for it"... Get a call: "Uh your starter is ruined, and we cannot start the car" it'll run another $350! Oh, and they said the battery was "shot" and could not even take a charge. I took the battery back to where I bought it a couple of weeks prior, and it took a full charge - no problem! The car has a hidden kill switch which I told them about, but the last guy working on it didn't know about it, and he was trying to start it and screwing around on it for quite a while I pointed it out to the kid, and noticed also that it was now broken and there were a bunch of wires hanging out under the dash, and the starter would not engage--- (It always did before). ...So I said hey, don't touch it... and had the car towed the hell out of there... total incompetence... and they had me pay another $100 to take a look at what they F**ked-up. No apologies or offers to make good. Unbelievable. I'm in the home electronics business and if we F something up... we fix it on our dime with apologies. My advice... Stay Away... I told a friend who works at another garage and he told me countless horror stories about this place. A very bad experience... so now the car is sitting out in the street in much poorer shape than when it was brought in... and won't drive and my son is $520.00 poorer and pretty disappointed. All in all it's a shame because I saw where these guys work on older cars and British cars, and I wanted to develop a long term relationship with this shop, but sadly that is not going to happen. Don't be fooled by all the cool old cars parked in their lot. I took my 69 Camaro to these guys and was totally ripped off. My car was running rough, the brakes needed work and i thought i might need new shocks. $7400 dollars later, my car continued to run like crap and my brakes were pulling and grabby. I also noticed no improvement in my suspension. I took the car back 2 times because it kept dying on me when I was driving it. They told me that vapors were building up in the carburetor that they charged me over $500 to rebuild. They told me that my brakes were fine. I finally took my car to D & D Brakes on Aurora. They inspected my brakes and said that the previous job was not done correctly. They also inspected my suspension and informed me that Crown Hill had installed only rear cheap shocks that didn't even match the ones in the front. Again, I took my car back to Crown Hill and they said that nothing was wrong with my car and the carburetor was fine even though the car was still dying on the road even while moving. I finally took my car to Rathburn Automotive in Ballard, they told me that I needed a "New" carburetor. The so-called re-built carburetor from Crown Hill had been filed inside and was a $500+ scam job. Crown Hill totally dismissed me every time I went back. I have since found new people to go to for my Camaro. Do NOT go to Crown Hill Automotive on Holman Road. They are a major rip off and they DON'T stand behind their work. At least get a second opinion. read more

Had service a year ago. The office was friendly BUT the mechanic reversed the new cables on the battery and then acted as if nothing was wrong (connected a new red line to the negative terminal and a black line to the positive terminal. That's a big deal if a jump is ever needed and someone looks at the cables and assumes red = positive, which they should!). Also, the mechanic put the wrong size connectors on the tips, so the terminals don't have a solid connection. The mechanic (Jerry?) also failed to notice and correct a huge fold in the radiator hoses. Not enough coolant was flowing through the engine, consequently. Also recommended several big-cost fixes that are not the usual first things to do. I give Crown Hill one star and recommend avoiding them. read more

The best mechanics in town!! They really care about their customers. I was dealing with some problems on my car that other mechanics had me coming back over and over again and paying for it deeply. I brought my car to Jerry and the gang and these guys would not stop until it was resolved. They even took me to work when I dropped my car off and picked me up when my car was done. This shop is great. I have had my Land Rover for about 7 years now. It requires a fair amount of upkeep since I use it for snowboarding and the occasional road trip along the coast. Crown Hill has been taking care of this truck for most of those 7 years. They've done oil changes, suspension swaps, head gaskets, rear hub replacement, radiator replacement and repaired failed exhaust manifold gaskets. They always tell me what needs to happen in their opinion, then ask me what I want done, then do it. They're always fair, crystal clear on costs before they do any work, and I can get a loaner car if I need it. I've leased 2 other Land Rovers, and been to both Land Rover Dealerships in the Seattle Metro area multiple times for service and lease related details. I'm OK with them for sales and post sales care. As for repair, I take my own personal, paid for, Land Rover to Crown Hill. It's a real shop, with real knowledgeable mechanics that remember your truck, you as a customer and do top flight work. Last visit they had the door open doing a lock repair. The last folks (insurance auto glass repair) had cut out the door liner, and left broken glass laying in the bottom of the door. They took the time to clean the door, fix the liner correctly and then fix the door lock. The mechanic just said "That's not the way I would have left the inside of your door, so I took a few minutes and fixed it." No charge. They might not always give you the greatest news (you need a radiator AND a water pump) but it's always the right news. I'm an engineer by trade, and do plenty of research. I always want to see the parts that get removed, and always demand a detail of their troubleshooting. I've never had to question a repair on my truck. It always checks out with research. Solid shop. Jerry is a pretty good guy and used to think the shop was priced fairly but in 2010 their labor rate is $ 115 / hour. This is the same rate as the dealership. As one reviewer wrote they are grouchy and Jerry's son does his best to overcharge you and ruin the business his dad has built over the years.
