Went in for my cleaning last week. Front desk staff were friendly and checked me in right away. Got my cleaning done by Layla! She's gentle and thorough. Saw Dr. Sarmiento who was also gentle and thorough in her exam. I have anxiety about any dental procedure but when I come here they make me feel relaxed because they explain everything that they are doing and tell me what I need to do. And for those of you who gave less than 4 stars...you're the problem LOL read more

Let me start by saying Dr. Tjan is awesome. He's a really kind and knowledgeable doctor who is really gentle. The issues I've experienced with this office comes from the front desk staff. Every time I call to schedule or follow up they always talk in a condescending manner, for example I never received a pre authorization from my dental insurance in the mail and they say "well they sent one" almost making it seem like it's my fault I didn't get it. They also twist there words a lot especially with a bait and switch where they will tell you one thing on the phone or when you schedule and something else entirely is the case like being told an amount for a cleaning then you get a bulk for a different amount. read more

I have been a patient for years. Never I have been lectured by someone over the phone who isn't my doctor before. The lady that makes appointments at Dr Tijan's office just repeatedly made me feel terrible about cancelling a dental cleaning. She told me 3 times, "Again, if you didn't cancel your appointment, Dr Tijan would have been able to see if you had a cavity or not..." I couldn't make it to my appointment due to a health issue. ( a mammogram I couldn't miss due to pre cancer surgery I had at 20). I am terrified of going to the dentist, and it's traumatizing for me to even think about going to have my teeth cleaned. And surely, that rude lady made me feel worst about my fear of dentists. There are ways of saying things. Being condescending and rude and shaming a patient isn't the way when you answer the phone at a doctor's office. My husband heard my conversation with the lady and was shocked about how rude she was. I some reviews on yelp and I'm apparently not the only person that thinks the front desk stuff is very rude. We won't go back that's all. read more

As someone with bad anxiety around dentistry, personality and fit are very important to me; I will pay 3x the usual cost if needed just to have work done by someone who is kind, caring, attentive, and empathetic. Dr. Tjan and his staff are all that and so much more! I was having issues with a root canal tooth still causing me pain and had been to 3 different dentists over the course of a few years trying to figure out the issue (one of whom pulled a completely different wisdom tooth instead ). After a second root canal, I was recommended to Dr. Tjan by a friend for the crown and spoke with his wife who was so compassionate and able to squeeze me in that week. Dr. Tjan not only did a beautiful job on the crown (my awesome new Endo even commented on how beautiful/realistic it turned out!), but also identified the issue with the prior root canal, corrected it, and I was pain-free within a week! And they offer payment plans to prioritize patient care over finances?? I would follow this man and his team cross-country if I needed to and cannot recommend him enough. read more

Edwin Tjan, DDS in Castro Valley is the best in the business. I had bone loss and the second tooth from the molar extracted and came to a decision to have implant or bridge. Dr Tjan recommended implant and two of them because the tooth space was quite large. Now this is a very honest dentist looking out for his patients because my previous dentist Dr Fong was replacing my crowns every five years when it was not necessary under my insurance. Dr Tjan speaks volume as to his recommendation!! This is what you call a honest doctor and a rarity. I'm blessed to have him as my dentistry doctor. Definitely a professional office and Kathy, hygienist is very meticulous and conscientious about her job. I would recommend this dentist to everyone that needs the experience like myself. My husband and I both make the journey from Pleasant Hill to Castro Valley to get our teeth looked after by Dr. Tjan! My husband's parents also go to him. Dr. Tjan is very friendly, gentle, and very honest. My husband has had one cavity in his life. I have had quite a few along with some dental work. My kids are the 3rd generation in our family to go to this practice. Dr. Tjan took over about 8 years ago when Dr. Creer retired. WE LOVE DR. TJAN! Never once have we been told we needed unnecessary procedures. My mom, kids and I go in every 6 months for cleanings. This last time, for the first time ever, it was discovered that my youngest had two cavities (GASP!). Dr. Tjan recommended we see a pediatric dentist because she's only 7 and she might do better in a pediatric setting. We saw the pediatric dentist (that's a whole other review..) and didn't like what he had to say (he wanted to put my daughter under a general anesthesia to fill one and then REMOVE the other!). I called Dr. Tjan and he agreed to fill the cavities, doing the smaller one first one day and then coming back a second time to do the bigger one. Dr. Tjan does not use gas in his office. I can see why. With his gentle hand and calm manner a shot of Novocaine was injected and my little one was very comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Tjan went slowly and gently and all was fine. We came back a week later for the more extensive filing and again, Dr. Tjan was wonderful and took his time making sure my daughter was happy and comfortable. I cannot recommend Dr. Tjan and his staff enough (Trish, his assistant is super nice, easy to talk to, and just a really good person.. she also had a big role in making my daughter feel at ease!). He's patient, calming, gentle and doesn't recommend unneeded procedures like so many other dentists. I'm sorry my daughter had two cavities (bad mommy for not flossing faithfully) but so happy she was able to get the dental work she needed without the unnecessary anesthesia the other dentist wanted to use. YAY FOR DR. TJAN AND HIS STAFF!!! Even if you don't like going to the dentist, you will be comfortable and well taken care of here! read more

My family has been going to Dr Tjan since he took over the practice from Dr Creer many years ago.  He is an excellent dentist. He is so gentle, always checking on your comfort.  For me he has always been a painless dentist.  I have never had any post procedure issues with any work he has done.  He tries very hard to avoid doing procedures you may not need.  I've been to dentist who try to push unneeded work.  Dr. Tjan is never like that.   Dr Tjan's office has a parking lot, but parking has become a little tight recently.  Medical offices were constructed the across the street and they have created some parking issues in the area. read more

I'm sorry it took me so long to write this review! I started going to Dr. Tjan about six years ago, after seeing another dentist who did a very bad job with a couple of crowns. I ended up having the crowns redone by Dr. Tjan, and of course, the insurance would not pay because it had been less than 5 years. Dr. Tjan is very conscientious and takes his time to make sure the bite is satisfactory, and that everything feels okay before you leave. He is very gentle and checks to see if you are comfortable during the procedure. I would recommend Dr. Tjan, especially to those who may be dentist phobic or have had bad experiences at the dentist's office. He will make you feel at ease. read more

Their staff is horrible and they don't know what they are doing. I've had an appointment for over 3 weeks now because ive had a toothache and that was the only time they could take me and they just cancelled on me without my knowledge. They only called me 3 days before (theyre closed friday-sunday and my appt was on monday) saying they need my xrays and they were supposed to look into my insurance to see if it was covered but out of those 3 weeks they didn't even check. Then theyre was miscommunication between Lisa and Tabby and they didn't know left from right so were just going around in this big circle of we don't know whats going on. All of this could've been avoided, now they want me to call my last dentist to get my xrays instead of them when they told me that was their job. So now I am doing your job for you? I've heard great things about the dentist but staff? Yeah a big no for me. read more

I have been going to Dr. Tjan for 10 years and I wouldn't even consider going to another dentist now that I have found him. When I first started going to him I was having constant issues with my jaw locking. I had seen other dentists, one of which made me a night guard. The night guard did not help and then it was suggested I have jaw surgery. Dr. Tjan never suggested jaw surgery for me. He made me a new night guard and took the time to properly adjust it. He was very thorough in explaining the entire process to me and what was really going on with my jaw. I no longer have any issues with my jaw locking. Dr. Tjan and his entire staff are fantastic. I highly recommend him to anyone looking for a dentist that goes above and beyond. He is extremely gentle and calming. read more
