I moved up to Humboldt at the beginning of the year. I was very excited about visiting this brewery (I am big into beer). This was pre-vaccine pandemic time, February 2021, so I had barely been out to eat for the last year. They had an outdoor dining tent, which might as well have been inside as it was totally enclosed. We chose a table outside of that, which was fine. What was NOT fine was the absolute non-enforcement of the inside mask mandate (there was no inside dining at the time, masks required to go in, use restrooms, etc.). We watched as a series of men went inside without masks. As we were leaving, I went into the bar to look at the merchandise. A guy with a bunch of ugly tats and no mask literally followed me and got in my space, like he thought it was a huge joke. The person I was lunching with observed this and was horrified. I didn't buy a hat and left as soon as I could. I called and spoke to a manager. I was told by her (and by a member of the wait staff) that these were "the locals." The manager expressed gratitude that I was making this report because undoubtedly other people had been driven away by this crowd. That was nice of her because I was furious. Months of isolation, I just wanted to enjoy some good local beer, and these territorial convict-looking dudes were flaunting the rules because apparently they have the run of the place. I was told someone else would be in touch with me and that it would be helpful to put this all in an email, which I did. No one from the company ever contacted me. And I have never returned, nor have I bought a single one of their beers since. And I don't plan on it. I waited this long because I know how hard restaurants and breweries have had it during the pandemic. But you know what? 7 months later, and I am still angry about this. They market themselves as an organic brewery doing good things for the planet but weren't willing to take the steps they needed to to keep their staff and clientele safe, and are apparently being held hostage by a bunch of unsavory locals who think it's cute to flaunt the rules and bother someone who was doing what she was supposed to. They get one extra star because the beer was solid. read more

Rotten service and long wait times. Food that didn't match what was on the menu and a thoroughly indifferent and cynical management make this place a complete rip-off. These people have been at it for some time. They are still serving out of a postage-stamp kitchen which is in no way adequate. They could expand it and improve the customer experience. But guess what? Long wait times means increased beer sales so they don't. We waited over an hour for our meal on both nights we were there. Server said " that's not my problem" when we complained. I cannot believe this place. Barely any vegetarian options and the veggie sandwich was an absolute joke at $15 for a tiny smudge of avocado, a sprinkling of olives, a wilted piece of lettuce and two thick pickle slices. It basically tasted like a pickle sandwich. My son got the Mac n cheese (only vegetarian option for him) and it was disgusting. The beer flavor is so strong and it's watery & lumpy with a tiny bit of cheddar on the top for $13. My son ate a few bites and just couldn't stomach it. My partner and I decided to give Eel River Brewing a chance after a delightful road trip to beaches on the lost coast. We decided we were going to order fish and chips and wash it all down with some beer. The fish and chips were great, I'm sensitive to salt//and grease. Luckily, they nailed it--I loved that I didn't have to worry about carsickness! I didn't leave feeling groggy or sick :-) The beer was awesome and we both appreciated the servers who were kind, patient, and attentive (but not overbearing). Counting ourselves lucky to have stumbled upon Eel River Brewing on our drive up state. The blonde ale was crisp and delicious, the caramel stout was good but needed a bit stronger caramel flavor. Food was a knockout. I looked at some past reviews stating that they weren't thrilled with food, so I don't know if the kitchen has improved or if those people were hard to please or what. We had the smoked spiced chicken wings - holy smokes probably the best wings I've ever had (especially with a little drizzle of the lemon they give you on the side) and the House-made black bean burger which was excellent. After a day south of Fortuna exploring and seeing the Redwood trees along the "Avenue of the Giants" and in Humboldt Redwood State Park, I was heading north back to Arcata/McKinleyville, CA. I consulted Yelp to look for craft breweries and found that Eel River Brewing Co. was on the way! It was a Wednesday afternoon around 5:00 pm, and the place was very busy! I managed to secure a spot near the end of the bar. After reviewing the Ale list - I opted for a tasting flight with the following selections: Organic - California Blonde Ale (5.8% ABV) Emerald Triangle Pale Ale (5.0% ABV) Emerald Triangle IPA (6.7% ABV) Organic - IPA (7.2% ABV) All were enjoyable, tastily crafted Ales! I especially enjoyed the Emerald Triangle Pale Ale and Emerald Triangle IPA! Nice citrus, floral, piney, hoppy, resinous notes! Everyone I encountered was friendly - both staff and a young man who sat down next to me at the bar. He was a local and frequents Eel River Brewing - so I struck up a conversation with him. It was from him that I learned what a "Trimmigrant" is (I had seen several of these folks during the day between Miranda, CA and Fortuna, CA) and exactly what "The Emerald Triangle" is. Interesting spot. We did an impromptu weekend up north of the bay and ended up at this little motel in Fortuna. This pub was next door so we ate their the first night we got in. The first night the food was delicious! We got all their beer battered fried seafood and stuff and it was really good! We ended up back there the second night (it was a Sunday and nothing was open..... like, at all, anywhere) And things got really bad. We wanted a seat outside and asked were told there would be a 10-15 min wait. We told our hostess we would sit at the bar and wait. We waited for an hour- mind you the entire outdoor space was empty. Finally I went to talk to the waitress and she blamed this all on me saying "I came to find you but you were not here". We had not gotten up the entire time- and we were talking to the bar tender who knew full well that we say their the whole time. Yelp Should consider half stars because it's really more than just a 3 but not quite a 4. 3 1/2 is really about right. It's a fun little place and I will go back but in all honesty the tri tip was a bit on the dry side it's likely what they use for their French dip without the Au Jus I only ate half meh. The onion rings were pretty darn good it was a great batter I'll imagine the fish and chips use the same batter so I guess I'll try that the next time. This place is great! The place was quite busy but we managed to get our food in a reasonable amount of time, sooner than I expected, considering how busy they were. I have gluten allergy, the server was knowledgable to make some helpful suggestions. What's really nice is everyone who works there seemed very pleasant and helpful to one another. Seated quickly. I arrived with my husband and stepdaughter at the end of our tour of the Avenue of the Giants, and so we were ready to eat! Menu is chock full of interesting items. I ordered the Redwood Philly cheesesteak sandwich. Husband ordered the Rueben, stepdaughter got the pulled pork sandwich. The menu says it comes with a choice of sides. I ordered onion rings, and husband and stepdaughter each got the sweet potato fries. My sandwich arrived as a blob of meat and cheese tossed in the center on the open sandwich, partway off of one end. No condiments. It probably could have used a couple of pickle slices. I requested mayonnaise. I tried folding and smushing my sandwich closed to distribute the blob evenly onto the bread. The choices of cheese were a miss - too strong and overpowering obscuring the flavor of the sandwich. The meat quality is fair to poor - not tender, not juicy. The mayonnaise did little to moisten it, and a few bites in I got a bit of tough gristle that I had to choke down. I resorted to dipping my sandwich in the ranch that came with my onion rings in an effort to moisten it. I had cut my sandwich in half, and lost interest in the 2nd half. The onion rings were enormous and tasty, and came with the aforementioned a side of ranch. The onion stayed put inside the crust when I bit into it- excellent! The bill arrive with a surprise: the "choice of sides" is actually French fries, and if we choose something else it's an "upgrade" and charged separately. When we asked our server, she pointed to a small line in the menu that says something about upgrades for sides. Deceptive menu+thoughtless server (she could have mentioned the word "upgrade" while taking our order, but chose not to) = overcharged customer. At $16 a sandwich, the "upgrade" at $3 each, this brings the price to $19. Not worth it. read more

Over the past 2 years I've tried Eel River for food 4 times. All 4 times ordered burger "rare", and all 4 times got somewhere between "well-done" and "crispy". ON two occasions I ate in and sent it back. This last time I relented to hunger and got a meal to go. I said "rare" at least 3 times to the waitress who I know wrote it down. I left in a hurry to get back to work and at my desk and discovered my $30 burger was sacrificed to a pyre of incineration. Not just well-done, but actually crispy-crunchy well done at the edges. Dry as dust. Impossible to eat without choking on the desiccated ash that was once my burger. I'm angry. I tried different shifts, different days, different times of the year and they ALWAYS Waaaaaaaay overcook their burgers. A waste of my money. I threw it out. I've wanted to visit the Eel River Brewing Company and on our last trip up north, we stopped off for a beer sampler and some oysters before dinner on Christmas Eve. We found that many others had a similar idea and although crowded, we found two spots at the end of the bar. We ordered a full round of everything on tap. The regulars and the seasonal specials. I think there were about 12 each of the 4 oz sample sizes. Not only is the beer unique and delicious, it's certified organic beer! The Acai Berry is unreal how good it is. To go with our beer, we ordered the grilled oysters. I was hoping for raw, but thought we would give these a shot. These were pretty darn good, grilled in butter, garlic and chardonnay and then I tapped them with Tapatio hot sauce. We split the sampler and the appetizer and were on our way. It was a nice little stop and we got to try a bunch of new brews which is a total score in my book. read more

Born and raised in Humboldt and been going to the brewery my whole life. Obviously lots of changes over the years but lately I've noticed things have started to go wayyyy down hill, for example the food DEFINITELY isn't what it used to be as far as quality, prices have gone up and the service has been HORRIBLE. I ignored these things for a while because the beer and atmosphere are both great, and it's where my friends and I like to meet up. It's always had a pretty good reputation for tourists who are looking for good food and a "local" vibe, but after my last experience I will only be ordering beer and will not be spending money on the food. If you go here and want to enjoy yourself, go in expecting slow service and overpriced, but subpar food. Really hate to see this place go downhill read more
