Their HVAC serviceman in the spring was fine. The serviceman in the fall fell very short. Friendly guy who said he cleaned the air and humidifier filters. When he left, I opened the air filter and it was dirty so I called another HVAC company and the humidifier filter had also not been changed as promised. Effective Air guy said we needed a warranty repair (we paid a lot for labor) on a motor. It made the same noise after he did the repair. The new company showed me that a wire just needed to be moved away from the motor and that that brand was known for that issue. The noise stopped. Effective Air guy misled us. I called Effective Air to get satisfaction. None given. Terrible experience. Changed HVAC companies. read more

The two repairman who came were very efficient and polite, and did a beautiful job cleaning and repairing our furnace. Before they came, the furnace was not keeping up with the desired temperature in the house; they cleaned the furnace thoroughly, and now it is working very well. and their price was extremely reasonable.Definite thumbs up!! read more

These people are con artists and hacks. They installed an air conditioner for $7000 that wasn't cooling our home. 1st they installed it incorrectly and the drip tray was tilted and took down our ceiling. Then, to my face, the manager told that me ac units can only cool a home by 10 degrees less than the outside temperature. So, if it's 90 outside my house can only reach 80 degrees! Not until I had a man send a letter to threaten to sue did they replace the unit. I think they tried to install an old unit. Who knows, but stay away read more

Could not be more pleased. Jon came to the house (with appropriate PPE) and thoroughly explained our options. We went with the fully modulated furnance and AC by Amana and what a difference. The temperature stays very even and the fan is hardly noticable because it runs at a lower speed than our old single-stage furnace. Their installers were on-time and very competent. Unfortunately, I made a decision to purchase a very expensive boiler and midrange hot water heater from Effective Air. Although I was told the boiler would be a solid, top-performing workhorse for many, many years, I have already had three service calls in two years for "bad" parts. I find myself without heat or hot water for the third time since having the equipment installed, as I wait for equipment to be ordered. Every time an issue arises and I have to contact the staff at Effective Air, I am more and more disappointed in every aspect of this company. The customer service is appalling and INeffective, the sales team does not appear to know what they are selling. They are unable to keep track of appointments or service requested. Before I started to have problems, I referred Jon to friends of mine for a quote on their own HVAC system. He bragged to them that I bought the most expensive system from him and they were immediately turned off by his demeanor. I am embarrassed of my judgement in choosing to work with Effective Air. I am under a ten year warranty on purchased equipment, so fortunately or unfortunately, I will have to continue to work with their lackluster performances. read more

This company is terrible. I had a working furnace that didn't have any problems. Scott came in with a trainee to clean the furnace for the season. They tried to sell me a capacitor which I didn't buy as I didn't need it. My furnace was working fine. Next day, I had no heat. I called the company and they came out the next day. They charged me $85 to come here. I live around the corner from their shop. Then Scott showed me a burned out conduit board. This must've happened when he was training the trainee the day they cleaned the furnace. They charged me $350 more for the conduit board than 2 other HVAC stores. I called to speak to the owner John. He did nothing about the situation. I will never use them again. They rip you off anyway they can. BEWARE. read more

I have used Effective Air in the past but after after my last service I will no longer be calling them. One of the zones in my home was not working and i was told i needed a new damper. I was quoted an upfront price of $482 but when i received the bill it was not itemized in any way just had the price. I decided to look up the part when my the tech left and saw that it was widely available for around $100. So they charged me $480 (plus the initial diagnostic fee) for a $100 part and 45 minutes of work. Shame on me for trusting I was getting a reasonably fair price and I guess they assume customers wont do any investigation as to what they are being charged. read more

Disappointed with the poor customer service. We first contacted Effective Air a month and a half ago when our ac unit had a leak. They were fast to schedule a day and a TIME to come fix it. We liked the professionalism of the technician and how easy it was to schedule the appointment, so we joined their annual maintenance service. But then everything went south. We had a leak this week, we called them, they could give us a day to come fix it but were unable to give us a time. With both of us working, taking a full day off work waiting to see when they come is very inconvenient. I asked if they could at least give us a time frame of 2 or 4 hours- they said they were unable. I asked if they could come on Saturday- they don't work on the weekends. I asked if they could give me a time later in a week, so that they wouldn't be as busy- they still couldn't give me a time. I asked why the first time we called them they gave us a time and now , that we joined their maintenance service, they were unable to do it- they were not able to give me a satisfying answer, she said that this is the way they work. (?) After a very long frustrating conversation with them, all of a sudden she said that they could come between 12.00 and 14.00. I gave them my husband number because he was the one staying home for it. The technician came at 14.25 but couldn't get in the unit because he and the customer service never contacted my husband- they only called me (busy at work) I called them later in the day when I saw their calls- they said they did call him. We checked if the number on file was indeed my husband's and the number was correct. If they had called my husband, he would have seen it in his phone, so they were basically lying. They never apologize. And offered to come another day. But of course.. again they could not offer a specific time frame.. Too bad their customer service is so bad, cause we did like the technician the first time. Regardless of the unprofessionalism of the customer service.. This is just not good service for working people. read more

I need to write a review you guys need to be informed. I had issue with my heat, called the guys from effective air, they came out couldn't figure it out instead kept ordering and changing different parts until they figured out which part it was in the end. The only problem is I was paying for the parts and time that was not the issue. So I was out of $1600 that is after the supposed discount. You see the problem with them is they kept changing parts until they found the right part after what 3 or 4 parts were replaced. I think the guy is a manager and his helper kept telling me he knows what he is doing, don't worry we take care of you! So they did took $1600 and almost a year before they were there and took $900. So in 2 years I spend about $2500 on them I could have added another $1000 and replaced a whole furnace couldn't I but no instead of that these clueless guys kept replacing parts and guessing if it's going to work or not! That's all I have to say about them. read more

Based on reviews I read I hired them to clean my ducts. Bad decision! The technicians were very nice. But that's the only thing positive I can say. One of the vents I could see had a big dust ball left in it so makes me wonder about all the areas I can't see. My laundry room- furnace room where their "cleaning unit" was located got covered with thick film of dust. I had to vacuum and rinse off everything in the room! The basement had a thinner film of sediment/dust all over it. Maybe they didn't close off room ducts very well? First floor and second had less dust all over but still required cleaning. I didn't think when I called to get my ducts cleaned I'd have to clean my entire house! I called the company and left a message but no response. Very disappointed and would not recommend! I called Effective Air to consult on an air efficiency problem I was having in my home - half of my home was freezing while half was blazing hot, plus our heating bills were outrageous due to this issue. The owner, Jon, came to my home to figure out what to recommend to remediate this issue. During his consult, he ended up finding a few quick fixes that he could do right then and there, so he got out his tools and got to work! He was also very personable and dealt well with my overly interested dog and babies. A few days later, he sent me a quote with several different options of fixes we could try, and even offered to come back out to the house to talk through the options and quote so we could make a game plan. I really appreciated this, as he had lots of ideas on how to help regulate the temperature house-wide and I wanted to get the best bang for my buck. We made a plan, and his team stuck to it as best they could. They ended up finding more issues in my basement once they took a deeper look, and they worked their tails off to rebuild ductwork that randomly wasn't connected in my crawlspace and to my vents. They also recommended the AeroSealing procedure, where they cover up all the vents and returns in the house and then blow this substance through the ducts that deals all the nooks and crannies. I can't tell you how big of a difference this alone made in my home. Since we've had the work done, my house is unbelievably more regulated and I've even had to turn the thermostat down a few degrees to stay comfortable. I really believe the AeroSealing will pay for itself because I won't have to overcorrect with the thermostat for inefficient and unsealed ducts. I've also had a decent number of contractors and workers in my home, and I will say that Jon's crew was the most professional and respectful group I've ever worked with. They closed all of my baby gates behind them, were as quiet as possible during baby nap times, and cleaned up after themselves. Our a/c broke on Saturday. Although Effective Air was closed over the weekend, they got back to us first thing Monday morning (that was fine with us, we could deal for 48 hours). Scheduled an appointment that day for 2-4 p.m.; got a nice call around 2:15 letting us know the technician was on his way. Victor arrived promptly and was super nice and professional. He quickly diagnosed the problem as a broken capacitor. We were so relieved that we did not need a new unit! Victor had to go back to the office to get the right part, but the entire problem was resolved in 90 minutes. What a relief. He even wore booties in the house when he came to check our air filter. We thought the price charged was totally fair and were so happy that they did not try to upsell us. A+! read more

The service men we have had were both knowledgeable and efficient. However this company takes on more clients than it can handle. I waited several months and cleared the day for an annual furnace cleaning. An hour before arrival, they said they had too many emergencies to come. They offered tomorrow ( impossible) or end of November. When I wanted my air conditioning services for the season, again it was several month wait. I chose a different company. So I am done. Effective Air is the absolute worst group of lying, unprofessional people I have ever dealt with. In addition to telling us our furnaces were both broken and needing to be replaced, (Which turned out to be not true) they attempted to charge us close to $1,000 for a new thermostat. When a different company came to re-check the furnaces and told us they were just fine and the cost of the exact same thermostat installed would be $245 I called effective Air and was told too bad. I've used Effective Air for all my home HVAC needs in Highland Park form the past 17 years. I trust them and have really appreciated the level of service and knowledge from the technicians. When my son brought a home for his family in Arlington Heights, last week, I wanted several HVAC services performed by Effective Air. Timing is critical as the move is planned for 5/29/20). Before that could happen, John, the owner, came out the day after the call and went over everything, offering suggestions and levels of importance - critical to a young family on a tight budget. We had all the air ducts cleaned first (on 5/20) - Adrian and Marcos did an expert job in cleaning and sanitizing them - I saw the ducts (before and after) and was totally astonished...and, this is hard work, but they are clean, neat and everything is great order before they left. Certain air returns had paint over the vents and they neatly scored the lines to remove each vent...you would never notice service was done. Even great care was given to the bolts (not scratching them) holding the vents on as they were just painted. It was a long process and done well. I have had this work done by another company (before I knew Effective Air) at my home in HP and the level of service, and certainly the outcome, was no where near the levels established by EA...my house was dusty, vents scratched and even materials left behind. I'm now in the process of scheduling other products and services for this Arlington Heights home...and, they accommodated this tight timeline as well. Thank you so much!! read more

John and his crew are amazing. We had them come in last year to do an air study in our home - the study was comprehensive and continued details on the quality of air in the home and the options for making changes. In the end, working directly with John we created a plan and installed an ERVAC system that has worked incredibly for the past couple of years. When we have questions, John or Brad are always a phone call away, and they will service the unit immediately if we have any difficulties with it. I remember about six months ago they came out on what I thought was an emergency call - and it turned out the filters were filthy. I've been a customer of Effective Air since 1986, except for 12 years when I lived in another state or in an apartment. Their service, expertise, and courtesy have been consistently excellent. Full disclosure: Effective Air's owner Jon Smith is my first cousin. I have a large extended family in this area, and there are other tradespeople in the family whom I would not hire again because of their work. From 1986 to 2000 I owned a brick ranch in Glenview with central air and gravity heat (which is so wonderful). EA performed regular maintenance on our furnace and I think made one repair to a ruptured pipe in the slab. In 2000 I moved to a townhouse with another good furnace and some unexpected problems. The second floor, including my bedroom, was roasting in hot weather, in bed I could feel heat radiating from the ceiling. EA recommended blown-in attic insulation and a thermostat-controlled attic fan, and the difference in comfort was astounding, plus my utility bills dropped. The house had forced-air heat, which is so dry in the winter, and I had EA install a humidifier on the furnace, which also made a big difference in comfort. From 2003 to 2015 I lived out of state or in apartments. In March 2015 I moved into a rented house in Evanston, and today I once again hired Effective Air. My husband and I are self-employed, so our home is our workplace, so comfort is necessary so we can keep working. Last night the house was at 84 degrees and there was thick ice on the refrigerant pipes, and we had heard chunks of ice falling inside the furnace. Technician Scott Belford was a pleasure to deal with, punctual, extremely knowledgeable, courteous and efficient. We had lots of questions, which Scott answered with a minimum of jargon, and he showed us how to do regular maintenance like replacing the furnace filter, which had been incorrectly inserted. Our landlord had said the system couldn't be low on refrigerant, and ice often means airflow problems, so Scott checked out airflow first, but adding refrigerant was the answer, and once he added it we had AC once again, and he did his best to get us a deal on refrigerant. We have used EA for over ten years. We have a very old boiler heating system, an attic AC unit and and a new forced air furnace/ac system located in the basement in a new part of the house. EA services all of them and does so with professional skill, friendly service people and timely service. I have only had one problem with them - and that was after the new section of the house was added and some of the boiler pipes had been rerouted or capped. They came out three times at no extra charge to get it right. Problem solved. We had them replace an old AC unit, deal with air clogs in the hot water pipes, fix the boiler after a system shutdown and we have EA do maintainence on all systems in the spring and fall. We have recommended them to friends and family and will do so again. read more

Why is a furnace place closed on the weekends? The good reviews are hard to believe but I see they are few and old. This place gave me a huge runaround, keeps calling back for something, won't schedule an appointment and very non-committal. They could stand to work more quickly and efficiently. If you talk to one person and then another, the second person tells you, "Oh sorry, I can't speak for anyone else" (same company)! Go elsewhere and save yourself a headache. You should not have to chase a company to get a service done. They obviously don't need your money. read more

Contacted the company after hours on a Thursday night (using the form on their website) and recieved an email response within hours - giving me a cell phone number to call if it was an emergency and the company phone number if it was not. I called Friday morning and the technicians arrived by 12:30. I have two separate systems, and they fixed the one that was no longer cooling. They also checked the other one, cleaned both, taught me what filters to use, and sealed a leaking vent. Very thorough and professional. The guys were great when I had them out to clean air ducts. Some unusual circumstances came up and they totally rolled with the punches. They were extremely professional and friendly. They offered to cover their shoes and were so concerned about making a mess in the house, even when I told them it was no big deal. They didn't even want to take a tip when I offered it.
