I was originally going to refrain from this review but it has to be said. To preface this, I want to explain that I write this without malice or ill intent. I have a soft spot for mom 'n pop shops who are working hard to scrape a living and surviving in this world of greedy corporations. And I try to avoid giving inflammatory reviews for the sake of my own internet clout or with an ulterior motive. So please know that this is done is earnest warning to people. I had originally posted a review and then removed it b/c Gabriel reached out. I felt bad but then I was reminded that I lost close to $9k because of E-fficient HVAC (EH) Some years ago I asked EH to install a new A/C system into my home. Gabriel gave a very competitive price that included removing and installing a furnace since the old one didn't support A/C. The job included essentially a full installation of an A/C system. Gabriel was a hard worker and very polite and accommodating. But that's not what was wrong with his work. He installed the wrong furnace or at least installed it incorrectly causing the furnace to push and suck air in the wrong direction. The entire system worked except for this one aspect. Because of this error I NEVER had a truly operational HVAC system in my home for years. I had air blowing in the wrong vents and sucking air in the wrong vents. Gabriel said it was due to some leak in the vents causing cold air not to go through properly and that it was out of his hands. I trusted him. I was wrong to do so. He said he'd plan the next steps for county inspections and he'd give me a call about what to do next. He never called and ghosted me. Fast forward some time later and a different HVAC company comes in and assesses the previously noted problems--the furnace was installed wrong. There were other small nitpick-y issues as well. It also turned out that permits were never pulled by Gabriel. I know this because the new HVAC co. did pull permits and I got them in the mail very quickly, whereas with EH I never got them and looked it up in the county system and it was never listed. The HVAC company had to redo a lot of EH's work and it cost me close to $9k. Now, as I am selling the house, the HVAC system in my (old) home is working and I know what competent HVAC work looks like. It passed tests and county inspections. All done within a couple of weeks with no hiccups. A stark contrast to E-fficient HVAC. I like Gabriel as a person. He's doing his best but niceness doesn't equate to working HVAC systems, nor does it compensate for the loss of nearly $9k. Again I tried to reach out to Gabriel and get help and all I got was answering machines and the EH office ghosting me. Gabriel might be fine for maintenance but avoid for brand new installs. And if you do decide on EH for a new install, ask a LOT of questions and perhaps make a friend in HVAC and ask what to look out for. read more

I was ready to replace my gas furnace from 1992, and Gabriel was highly recommended to me by a neighbor who had recently replaced their gas furnace. Gabriel provided the most competitive quote of the three that I received. He has a calm and honest vibe, which is actually important to me when I am choosing someone to do major work on my house- my intuition is always accurate! Gabriel replaced the gas furnace with a Fujitsu heat pump in less than three days. He replaced all of my duct work and even caught a significant issue with my water heater venting system (the system was emitting carbon monoxide, not good). We had a tight crawl space and he was detailed and patient with us, making sure his suggestions would work within our space constraints. Gabriel is a straight up artist when it comes to hvac systems. We had quotes from a few places, including some major names, and when I met Gabriel he was so down to earth and told me exactly what we needed to get the comfort we wanted. He came in 15% lower on price than the big players, who tried to sell their reviews and services as the reason we should pay extra. We had a couple mini splits installed 2 years ago by a different company. They turned out to be mediocre. I walked Gabriel through our issues with contractors in the past, and he gave me real talk on the system they had installed for us. He walked me through my options and gave me an exact quote. Fast forward to installation day, we were installing 3 more mini ductless heads in our house. 2 of them needed lines going under the house to the other side. Gabriel quoted 4 days for the entire project and got it done in 3, by himself! The thing I loved about this company is Gabriel does not outsource his work to subcontractors. Many places will have the owner show up and then send a bunch of subcontractors to do the actual work. That means the quality usually suffers. Gabriel was a 1 man show. Came in by himself hauling all the equipment and did every bit of work by himself. The quality of the installation was amazing. At the end of the project, every piece of conduit blended in with the house and the condenser was nicely fitted on a platform blending in with our other condenser. No excess wires or tubing anywhere. It looks flawless. Gabriel is only contractor I've ever had that has never asked me to write a review. Gabriel did a system check and made sure everything operated perfectly. My previous contractor would defer to tech support and put me on hold for hours to get a resolution. His work is clean and the new outlets he set up for us have completely solved the problems we were having before. He was communicative and stayed flexible even when we changed our original plans. Across the 5+ decades of my experience of home ownership, I've had cause to hire a lot of people to install or fix something. Yesterday, Gabriel of E-fficient HVAC installed a new hot water heater for us and I'm delighted to share that this experience was one of the rare ones; it was entirely positive. First, when I was calling around to select a company to do the job, Gabriel was completely responsive and over the phone quoted us his flat rate for installing a 50-gallon heater. Every other company cited a range of cost and insisted on sending someone for an estimate. It was so much better and more efficient to be offered a flat cost without add-ons, upsells, conditions, estimates or haggling not to mention that Gabriel's quote was better than any of the others. He arrived on time and promptly set about removing the old heater and replacing it with the new. As our home is built on a hillside, our water heater is under the house and is a tricky installation. Gabriel's mama named him right because he is a legit Angel! We had a so called furnace "inspection" a few years ago that comparitively was a joke. Everytime it rained, nasty basement smells were circulating thru the heater vents and the system had gotten loud. There was a possability mice were taking shelter and getting into the ductwork! Gabriel booked an inspection the day after I reached out, and showed up flashlight in hand. It took him about 10 minutes to find holes in the ductwork, a gaping seal near the air intake and a number of other problems. He recommended replacing all of the ductwork, said it hadn't been installed correctly and that he uses better materials. He researched the furnace and said it was functional and fairly efficient. He even explained how we could keep the furnace housing to add combo heat/AC in the future. The ductwork is beautiful now and routed to maximize visibility and access to the crawl space. The system is air tight, odor is gone, condensation leaks are gone and the furnace is much quieter and heats fast! Gabe takes pride in his work and his pricing is excellent for the quality. He booked the job fast and knocked it out, explaining everything along the way. I'm so glad we found him. This level of craftsmanship, communication and expertise is becoming a lost art. Super impressed. Gabe and his crew installed AC into my home about 10 months ago when my wife was 38 weeks pregnant and Oakland was being hit with a heatwave. He came out the next day to quote me and tell me about how they work. Gabe has an extensive commercial and residential background and is very particular about getting work done RIGHT. He ended up rebalancing my whole HVAC system and putting in a fancy 3 zone system. The only thing I'd tell you to be mindful of... Contacted them for an estimate for Furnace and AC. About 10-15K of business. We had an appt set and they cancelled the day before citing that something had come up. We reschedule for 2 weeks out. In fairness they said they could do it the next day. The night before our 2nd appt, I got another email saying they needed to cancel the time I had set aside. They said the estimator was done at 4 and wanted to know if he could come b/w 5-7. I replied that was the second cancel and I said if he could come b/w 4-4:30, I could do that. I never heard from them. At 5, he called and said he couldn't make it at 5 but could he come at 6:00? NO. Not a business that respects my/customers time. 3X they couldn't meet their commitments. We weren't able to meet at our originally agreed upon time but when we finally met, I found out that his business was impacted severely by the recent looting occurring in Oakland.
