The sweet and sour chicken was not bad. The beef and broccoli was more broccoli than beef. My husband and I were going to go out to a place that is the closet to our home on NYE, the storms were so bad we barely got out of our driveway. When we arrived it was closed but we saw this place next door and it was open. We ordered the Lemon Chicken, Broccoli and Chicken and 3 Egg rolls. 3 come in a order with that yummy red sauce. I judge a Chinese place by the Lemon or Orange Chicken because that's my go-to order. I liked that one order of egg rolls included 3 of them. The food was pretty good and we ate all of it. The portion sizes were very generous and the prices were also very good. The place itself is very modest and small. I wouldn't personally stay here to eat. Many people were coming in a picking up "to-go" orders so I bet that is a large percentage of their business. The workers were very friendly and accommodating. Most disgusting food I I ever attempted to eat... poop shoot shrimp, was beyond breaded but still the poop was in the shrimp, ... threw that away. The eggroll king franchise is a staple of quick and cheap take out in Reno. As a foodie, I don't think I can give this place more than three stars for food or atmosphere but I wanted to write a review to offer a few highlights. I personally don't really go for the stirfry dishes but every time my daughter is sick, like today, she wants their egg drop soup and I want their hot and sour soup. Both are tasty and exactly what you would expect. The other highlight that I wanted to point out is that this location is right next to Reno High school. These folks are sweet enough to offer a five dollar lunch menu for students during the school week. I bought a combo dinner here and what can i say. Its cheap, hot, greasy and salty! The kung pao chicken sauce was actually decent. Spicy, fresh ingrediants. The sesame chicken tasted like it was microwaved, so it was meh. The chow mein and fried rice were average, nothing special there. I also ordered some fried shrimp that tasted like they came out of a box, frozen and were cooked an hour previous. A little chewy, but not terrible. Let me tell you something about this specific Egg Roll King. This location in particularly is very special to me, this place and I share a lot of memories together. I first started coming here with my dad when I was 8 years old. Then everyday for lunch when I went to Reno High School, before every football game, homecoming, ROTC event and after school. I'd skip class with my younger brother and eat on the steps outside on a cold February afternoon. When going to college I'd grab food while doing my laundry just a couple builds down. My favorite dish here and my go to is the off the Chefs Special menu The Generals Chicken with an full Order fried rice and chicken chow mein. If I'm feeling sick or even maybe a little down the Wonton Soup will lift the spirits. On a cold December afternoon the Hot & Sour Soup will warm you right up. And the Mu Shu is also one of my favorite dishes. The prices are fairly cheap and the service is always super friendly. I highly recommend checking this place out! HEALTH HAZARD ALERT WARNING Just last night my boyfriend and I ordered food from this Egg Roll King for dinner. We've eaten here many times so we didn't think we had anything to worry about, so we drove home and unpacked the box the food came in. I was about to start eating my dinner when my boyfriend alerted me that there was something in the box, and sure enough there was a LIVE cockroach crawling around in the box, as well as some baby cockroaches and larvae. We were so horrified that we immediately threw away the food and didn't even bother risking eating it. This is unacceptable, especially considering they are one of the primary off-campus locations for the Reno High School students. First...these egg rolls are HANDMADE they aren't out of a box in the freezer, I can taste the fresh vegetables inside. The Kung pao chicken is rich and SPICY with nicely diced fresh vegetables. Only the pot stickers were flavorful, although somewhat burned. The beef in the ginger beef had a strong flavor of ginger, overwhelming the beef. The fried rice was 99 44/100% rice with peas, a few pieces of meat and one shrimp in it without much flavor. We have eaten here for many years. It appears to now have new owners. We ordered General chicken, house special fried rice, house special chow mein and eggrolls. We ordered to pick up and we live no more than two minutes away and by the time the food got home it was barely lukewarm. On top of it all the food was really tasteless. And the order did not include our eggrolls. We went back to pick up the eggrolls which we ordered and were given a hard time by a lady at the counter saying we did not order them. Another employee came out because she was being rude and took care of us right away. I would no longer recommend eating here. We will no longer order from them. Sauced was obviously just poured over fried chicken pieces. The generals chicken was OVER sauced with a slimy gel type sauce that was VERY unappetizing and mostly inedible. I don't claim to be an expert in anything, but I've probably spent 10,000 hours eating Chinese food so I have enough practice to be a good judge. Egg Roll King is your typical low-cost, Americanized Chinese food restaurant take-out. What they do correctly is provide a low-cost meal option and fast. What I think they lack in comparison to other similar restaurants is quality of food and options. The location is also very sketchy and not super clean. I ordered the 2-entree special and a side of potstickers. I have previously eaten here as well and have tried a lot of different things. I ordered chicken vegetables and garlic honey chicken. Although flavorful, the garlic honey chicken was very heavy and too greasy for me. The chicken and vegetables, however, were flavorful and nice. I'm not a big fan of either of their methods for fried rice or chow mein but ultimately went with the chow mein which is a very greasy and heavy serving. The potstickers were a disappointment and I won't be ordering them again. Not a ton of flavor and very odd tasting and also burnt. Previously, I've had the hot and sour soup which is a large reason I come here. I think its flavorful and one of my favorites in town if I want something fast. Overall, this place is somewhere I'll continue to eat here-and-there. It's not incredible but it gets the job done. 3/5 food, 2/5 location, 5/5 service. read more
