I didn't want anything heavy so I got the spinach salad with blackened redfish. The food came out really quick and it was alright... Not the best salad I've had, but solid. My one gripe (which is a big one) is that the bill was $37 (w/ tip) for just the salad and and iced tea... Yikes.

The restaurant is out on the bay with lots of yachts and tables set outside for those photos with your wishing to be yours yacht. Inside, the decor would make you think of a good Ole bar and dining room on the sea. The menu is diverse enough for seafood and non-seafood lovers, like myself. I debated between the meatloaf and reuben. It seems like the Reuben is one of their signature dishes and you can have it made with meatloaf, brisket, or redfish. I decided to have the best of both worlds and went with the meatloaf on the reuben. Excellent choice as the meatloaf was wrapped in bacon, nice and thick, and paired well with the Russian dressing. The best part of the sandwich was the provolone cheese. The rest of my party ordered the redfish reuben, shrimp plate, and fish tacos and seemed to be pleased. Sweet tea was fresh-brewed and refreshingly sweet! I wish I had room for their homemade key lime pie but had to skip on it. The Local's is sure to please everyone with their menu and scenic view.

I always get pancakes when I go, but I've tried their eggs, potatoes, bacon, hash brown casserole, peach cobbler, and a biscuits & gravy - all have been super yummy and tasty. One day I'll remember to take a photo of the food before I eat it up, haha. Definitely a go-to for that home cooked comfort food feeling.

I added my own salt but they were still good, the gyro was fresh shaved off the spitz and again the hashbrowns casserole was fantastic. The cheese hashbrowns are fantastic. The eggs sunny side up were dialed, maybe could use a little salt or pepper, but I'm sure they do flavor to your own tastes. Sadly, for me, I didn't like anything else. The egg wrap wasn't for me and whatever was in it. It was really really dry. I don't know if they use a spitz for the gyro or not or if it's heated on a grill out the fridge, but it arrived dark brown, meaning the gyro meat was dried out and didn't have that gyro texture. I will definitely give them another try and update my review accordingly, but for this meal. The hashbrowns were the star.

I ordered one of the most expensive dishes on the menu $29.99 and he ordered a $15.99 coconut chicken salad along with two diet cokes. When we got the check they had calculated the check with a 20% service charge. We asked what it was and was told it was 16% for her and 4% for the kitchen. Nothing based on the service or how good the food was an automatic 20%. No warning at all! As they were seating, another customer that server said have you been to the boathouse before and the customer said yes. So she stated you are aware of the service charge then. The customer said yes. Maybe us saying something about it is why she said that, not sure, but we were never informed and we've never had that explained to us before either.

NOTHING has changed. The food is just meh, bland!! The fish was over cooked and chewy, the vegetables that came with the entree were mushy. For $32 dollars the fillet of grouper I received was small, thin and as stated, over cooked. Did I mention the price? $32 for grouper with a little shredded crab meat on the top, vegetables and rice. 2 entrees, an appetizer, 1 mixed drink and 2 cans of beers. Yes cans. $130 dollars. They also charge an automatic "Service" charge of 20%. 16% goes to your server, and 4% goes to the kitchen. Sorry, tips are earned, they are not automatic. I generally do tip 18-20% anyway, but that is for me, the customer to decide, not the restaurant owner. I did find something good to say! Obviously, the location is nice and sitting on the deck is great. The hush puppies are also really good. But, outside of that. No thanks. Won't be back anytime soon, if ever.

But as the saying goes: never judge a book by its cover. We were absolutely blown away by the experience. Despite the modest exterior, the food is nothing short of world-class. I ordered the ribeye, and it was cooked to absolute perfection--tender, flavorful, and easily one of the best steaks I've had in a long time. Since we were a large group, we ended up ordering a significant portion of the menu. Between us, we tried the fish, shrimp, and various pasta plates. It felt like we sampled almost everything they offer, and every single dish was an absolute hit. It's rare to find a place where the entire table is equally impressed with their meal, but Basil & Baxter's pulled it off effortlessly. Beyond the incredible kitchen, the service was outstanding. The staff was attentive, welcoming, and handled our group with the kind of professionalism that makes a night out feel special. If you're in Niceville, do not pass this place up. It might look humble from the street, but the flavors and hospitality inside are massive. We will definitely be back!
