Bruh. Listen. If you're poor, depressed, and you really don't want to cook, get food here. I ordered a burrito from Uber eats and this thing was so massive it kept me fed for two days. I don't know your appetite so I can't guarantee how long it'll keep you fed for but unless you're like the Rock or a professional eater it's gonna be more than one meal. We came here to try a new spot. They are fairly busy so service was a bit slow our waitress kept forgetting stuff. The food was good, fresh and huge portions. I ordered the fajita burrito (14), he ordered the mexiburger (7) and we had the super nachos with pork (9). By far the nachos with pork was the tastiest thing we had. I thought this place was great! My vegetarian burrito was huge. Our server, Alfonso I believe, was super busy but he still made an effort to provide good service. I came to this place for a Sunday dinner and there were not many people there. I was seated relatively quickly and given water. After I ordered, I was provided chips and salsa. The salsas were quite unique and very good. However, they were a bit on the salty side. One of the two dishes of salsa tasted a little bit like kimchi. As some of the other people have mentioned, the service is lacking here. They simply serve the water, take the order and then is gone. Visiting from out of town and wanted someplace close to where we were staying for dinner. Some things on the menu were quite pricey compared to what I'm used to at home ($10 for tortilla soup?!)...however, the small combo plate I had with 1 shredded beef tamale and 1 cheese/onion enchilada with rice and beans was just under $8 and generous portions! I thought it was delicious, standard Mexican cuisine. The salsas were unique in flavor to me so I really enjoyed them but didn't care much for the tortilla chips. I don't do dairy, so I ordered it without the sour cream in the description. It came with cheese, which was not listed. (They did fix it) My friend ordered fajitas with Carne asada and flour tortillas. She was served chicken and corn tortillas. (They did fix this as well) No offer to reduce the price of the meal or anything, after we (very politely) sent food back three times. We won't be back, but you might enjoy it. We cross the border often, but this place may increase the frequency. My wife hails from Texas, where authentic Mexican food is widely available, but not so much where we live now. The TL;DR is this place is, in her words, incredible, and when I joked about leaving a bad review, she threatened to punch me. As a picky eater, I'm happy to report that the plain cheese nachos, steak, and fries are excellent, although the mozza sticks came out a bit charred. Overall a great stop for authentic Mexican dining. Nothing super fancy, just well executed food and friendly staff. read more

My friend & I had lunch here. We were a little stressed for time so ordered the lunch special which came promptly. We both had the 2 tacos for $6. I asked for mine to be served 'street' & my friend had the crispy. They are served only with onions & cilantro which is not a problem for me as I usually dump a good quantity of salsa on them. My friend asked for sour cream. We both had a margarita. Overall everything was fine but not exceptional. Been coming here for awhile and the food is consistently good, the portions are great and you get what you pay for. Though it's a little pricey for the big burritos you walk away with like an extra meal and a half. What really gets the 5 stars is the one guy who works there with the shaved close hair who's incredibly friendly and makes the experience feel like home. I've been to this Mexican restaurant at least a dozen times in the last several years, and I've never been disappointed with the food. I love their pico de gallo, and all their dishes are tasty and amply served. Beverages are diverse for adults and kids, and they strive to give good, friendly service. This was my first time ordering from El Agave and it was delicious. I ordered the Mole enchiladas, and while the mole sauce was a bit sweeter than I am used to, I still found it pleasant. Having just moved to Bellingham, I've been trying to find some good Mexican food. From the looks of the well stocked bar, it might be a really great place for happy hour. But, I tried the most basic order & found it to be disappointing on every level. I had shredded beef tacos, rice & pinto beans, starting with chile con queso to go with the storebought chips. If they do the small stuff right, then work your way toward gallina en mole chocolat later. Right? El Agave committed to cardinal sin! They served me tacos in those boxed "taco shells" like you buy off the shelf at Walmart. While the shredded beef was both tender & tasty, tacos they were not! The rice was reminiscent of Uncle Ben's in texture. While they added something to the cooking liquid that changed its color, I couldn't taste what it might have been. The beans were whole pintos, perfect in texture, but cooked without a hint of salt, cominos, oregano or any other seasoning. The chile con queso was tasty, but the waiter let it slip that it came from a large can. Still, it was good, full of jalapeños. I won't go back unless its to test their margaritas. No such thing as a bad margarita, some are just better than others! read more

El Agave recently opened in the former Popeye's/McDonald's space. The owners did a nice job making some minor layout changes and adapting the interior to make it their own. We were greeted by a hostess at the front counter and seated promptly. The seating is nice and includes lots of comfy booths and tables. Obviously, due to the newness of this restaurant, everything was clean and tidy. Since my visit was within their first week of opening, the service was a bit rough, but smoothed out throughout the meal. Water, warm chips, and salsa were brought to the table by a bus boy. The Pico de Gallo was a bit too dry for my tastes but the other salsa was really very good. The waitress came along and we ordered drinks. The margarita was pretty good. $6 for a regular was okay, glad I didn't get the Jumbo. I ordered the daily special (Monday) which was Arroz con Pollo. It was pretty tasty. Chicken and veggies (in a bit too much sauce) over cheesy rice with tortillas. I am not a big "put it in a tortilla" eater so I ate it normally. The chicken was pretty good and the cheesy rice was pretty tasty. The dish had plenty of sauce, was tasty, and was served very hot. I requested more vegetables which came in the form of mushrooms, green peppers, and onions. The other dish at our table was an egg dish Machaca con Huevo. It was good, but a little dry. The eggs with shredded beef was tasty. The refried beans and rice were good but nothing out of the ordinary. The sodas refills did keep coming (after a bit of prodding). The owner came by and was very nice, but seemed a bit shy. For an opening week, it was a good solid showing. The food was good, not spectacular. I will likely return to El Agave in the future, and hope things will be as good or better! read more

The two redeeming factors of our visit were that the service was extremely friendly, and my Sex on the Beach cocktail was fantastic and only $5. Unfortunately, the rest of our meal varied between bad and atrocious, and we were both sick afterwards. The chips were stale, which was our first warning, and although the salsa was enjoyable, my dining companion said the pico was wilted and stale-tasting as well and she didn't enjoy her margarita much either. The refried beans were mushy and almost inedible, and everything else was average at best. Everything, from the salsa to the mole sauce, was an odd mixture of bland and spicy, with almost the exact same flavor profile and completely lacking in taste. The prices were OK, but too high for the poor quality of the food, with the bill coming to nearly $40 for 2 dinners and 2 drinks. We won't be back. read more

A treat for dinner on the way home after a long weekend. Stopped in here by myself and wasn't disappointed. Bit of happy hour, fresh chips, delicious homemade salsa, and perfect margarita. Portions were massive, prices very reasonable, lots of selection as well. Service was attentive and friendly, and when I asked for fresh jalapenos, two delicious roasted jalapenos arrived shortly thereafter. I love this place! The customer service is fantastic and friendly - I love all of the servers. My favorite entree there is the El Agave which has a sauce that is a tomato and sour cream base. So good! I highly recommend it. My boyfriend's favorite is the Pollo a la Crema - a sour cream sauce base. Creamy, rich and so good! It makes me feel a little guilty if I order an entire one for myself so I just take a bite off of my boyfriend's order. We both order our own dishes every time we visit El Agave. You definitely have to take some home because there is so much food. Also, they give your a complimentary dessert (a fried tortilla covered in cinnamon and sugar, topped with whipped cream and a berry and chocolate sauce). Just moved to Bellingham and looking to replace our usual Mexican place. Came here on the second night because it was very close and we were beat. I was a little skeptical pulling in but I think we found our new usual. The food was very good and had some great flavors. I had the El Gave signature dish and absolutely loved it. My wife thinks the enchiladas she had were some of the best from a typical Mexican restaurant. Friendly staff and they have good beers on tap as well as some potent margaritas.
