As a Texan, I take my Mexican food very seriously. When we moved to California, we couldn't find anything worth eating, until we stumbled across this little gem that reminded us so much of home. We were regulars for 3 years as we have since moved. The food is excellent, ask for the real salsa, not the gringo salsa. Also, the staff is always great, but our waitress for the last three years is the best. She watched our child grow up and she was sad to see us go. To our son, she's the chica lady who he likes to hear talk. She definitely made us feel at home from the first day we came in. I've only been to this restaurant a few times for lunch. The service is good. Unfortunately, the upholstery in trees eating booths is completely shot and has been patched with duct tape. This is a sure sign of financial troubles. The bright side is that I had the best shrimp burrito ever here. The portion was so large that I took half home and had a full meal the next day from the leftovers. My lunch partner was equally impressed! Great food! My family and I have patronized this restaurant several times. We always left satisfied, UNTIL TODAY! My husband ordered a dinner plate, my son ordered the Azteca Burrito and I ordered a Ceviche tostada. When my item arrived, I was immediately taken aback at the way the Ceviche was prepared (should have taken a picture as proof). I enjoy Ceviche and order it often, so I know how it should be prepared. After 2 bites, I couldn't eat anymore of it. The waitress came to our table and my husband told her that I didn't like it and we wanted to send it back. I apologized to her twice because I dislike returning food at a restaurant. The waitress was pleasant and asked me if I would like to order something else and I said, "yes, a pastor taco". 5 minutes later a different waitress approaches our table (with the plate of Ceviche in hand) and tells us that we still have to pay for it because we ordered it. At first I didn't know how to respond, but then I became offended, because her delivery was so rude! I told her that I absolutely was not going to pay for it and she asked me if I still wanted the taco and I would have to pay for that too; uh, NO THANK YOU! When it came time to pay the bill, I made sure to give it to the second waitress and told her that we reduced the amount of the Ceviche from the total price. Needless to say, an argument ensued, and we were told to not come back. NO PROBLEM! I wouldn't patronize this restaurant again of you paid me to! NOTE TO RESTAURANT OWNER: Place a sign on your door that clearly indicates "If your not satisfied with you food, you still have to pay for it", and remind your waitstaff that a little TACT and COMMON COURTESY goes a long way with paying customers. read more

I have been to this restraunt many times over the years and never once have I not received excellent service and for me....the food is delicious. I have only just found Yelp so this is my first review.....I was motivated by the service I received today at El Azteca. They went beyond the required service. I wanted one of their Lunch Plates...but I needed several items left out of the meal...because it was for my little friend who can't eat these items any longer...they were so kind and they happily prepared the meal so that my friend could ENJOY it. All of the women who work in this restraunt are equally as pleasant.....and THE FOOD IS DELICIOUS.....I have even ordered a pan of their rice to serve with my home made Mexican meal....but everyone was SOOO glad I had El Azteca rice....hmmmmm...what does that mean?? ha read more

We found this place after checking the reviews for good Mexican food in the area and we could not be more pleased with our choice. Service was spot on, we had fresh chips and spicy salsa right away. We each ordered margaritas and my Passionfruit Marg was sooo good. Born and raised in So Cal and Gilroy I know good mex and been living in Hawaii for over 30 years and have to get my fix every trip to Cali. This place did it with all hand made dishes! The restaurant was started by their Grandmother 40 years ago in '73 and they use all of her recipes. The chefs been there working with the family over 30 years and you can tell. I had carne asada enchilada, chili verde enchilada, and pork tamal with home made beans. My hubby wanted black beans but loved the flavor of the authentic flavors. The flan was so fresh and juicy it melted in my mouth, made same ! We are coming here everytime we are in the area- it's that good. Ok food, bad service! Everything was decent until we got out food. Our server who's name appears on the receipt only as server #001 was a total biotch and I've never experienced a bitchier waitress in my life. She didn't visit out table much so luckily we didn't want more than the one basket of chips and when she finally checked on us 3/4 of the way through our meal I politely explained to her that I didn't care for the margarita I ordered and asked if I could just send it back since I had barely touched it and we were almost done with our food. She immediately told me no without asking a manager and told me because it was alcohol I could not return it. I explained to her I wasn't trying to be a bother but that I was a server myself and whether it's food or drinks it shouldn't be an issue if the guest really dislikes it and if she can at least ask. She snapped at me saying they weren't my restaurant and walked away only turning the corner for a second before returning and saying she couldn't take it off. Knowing she didn't really check with a manager, I asked if I could just exchange it for a different flavor. In a patronizing snotty way she told me she would have to charge me for another drink if I swapped it out because I "ordered it." At this point me and my friend are really appalled and just want to leave so say whatever we'll just pay for the drink,we had to go. She left for a long time! Finally when she returned she told us she took the drink off and we thanked her and gave her our cards. She came back a couple minutes later and said she "accidentally" ran my card twice!! I tried a few things here. The tacos were ok but really skimpy on the meat so that's a no. I also had the chile verde & it was decent but the chile was too watery I like thick spicy chile. I also had the tamales & they were ok the had a red salsa on top of them. Other then that they probably would have been dry. The waitress was really nice. Overall the beans & rice my favorite thing. I still haven't found a good Mexican restaurant but this comes to the closest. read more

I will never come here ever again! poor service poor food My dad drove an hour and half to visit me wanted to take me and my boyfriend out for brunch he ordered we were greeted and upon ordering i asked for 3 waters we were given chips and salsa my dad ordered caldo de mariscos and my boyfriend ordered a quesadilla a party came in and still we had not received our waters and she took the order for the other party that came in shortly after we ordered and gave them their drinks first after i reminded her of the waters she still took another 10 minutes just to get us waters and we ended up waited for about half an hour to get our food my dad being a cook was not pleased with the portions of the shrimp and clams which were dead and one skinny crab leg and scallops the size of a nickel for $15 oh and 4 tiny tortillas and when he asked for more they charged him $2 for dry tortillas that were probably microwaved in seran wrap, my boyfriend who ordered a carnitas quesadilla got a dried tortilla with a whole lot of cheese with barely any meat no sour cream no quac or salsa! we were very upset and will never come here again read more

This used to be one of my favorite Mexican restaurants back in the 1980's. One of the few good places to eat in Fairfield back then. I bought along a friend who was visiting in 1992, and got sick about a couple hours after going home. Not real bad, but nauseous for quite some time. Didn't eat there for 8 years and I thought I'd give it another chance. The first couple visits went well. Then in September of 2000 I got food poisoning really bad. Was up all night and had the dry heaves by morning. That was rough! I've never been back since. Maybe it's okay. They're still in business and the reviews seen pretty good. This is the best Mexican food I have had since I visited Mexico. The food is all fresh, including the margaritas which are made from scratch. The burritos and enchiladas are amazing, and the margaritas (which come in about 10 flavors) are top notch. I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

My family and I went to try this place out. From the inside it looks pretty nice, it's kind of hot in there though, no A/C and the ceiling fans were on really low. The waitress that attended us was really friendly and so was every other person on their staff, I can't complain there. The reason I gave them 2 stars is because although their food there is "good" enough to eat, I thought it was legit mexican food and although, yes I admit, it IS mexican food, it's very Americanized. And their menu is very limited and not detailed enough as in what comes in the food e.g. In the tacos, enchiladas, chimichangas. And when we asked for extra hot sauce, every other restaurant I've been to they give you more sauce no charge and here they charged us $1.25 for like a squirt of extra sauce!! It was kind of pricey too compared to other places. If you're looking for some actually good legit mexican food I suggest trying La Cabaña in Suisun. read more

Here's why the high rate - I am gluten intolerant (unconfirmed celiac/found out early 2010) - for those who don't know -this means I don't want to ingest anything with any amount of wheat, bran or rye - which means no: bread, pasta, flour tortillas etc. Also I don't want any cross contamination to my food. I am a vegetarian ( for 22 years) to boot. I have been eating (Vegetarian and gluten free) at El Azteca at least once a week for a year and a half and I have not become sick or sick of it. Many of the waitresses are so nice I look forward to seeing them. There is no pomp or frills to the food but it still tastes darn good. I really like the food, my mom (who frequently eats at restaurants who have chefs not cooks) really likes the food and 3 of my closest friends I know for a fact really like the food. It's been open since the 70's so you know for a lot of people it's got that something. Also - it's decorations - so passe - I have to love it because they have the courage to stay with the traditional Mexican motif. Also I love booths over chairs and they have like 9 of them so the chances of getting one are high. The place is always clean and haven eaten there over 100 times, I have never seen a bug or rodent and I have never been disappointed and wished I had gone somewhere else.
