This is one of those hidden gems that's great for lunch if you're looking for an inexpensive midday meal during a monotonous work day or even for a weekend gathering for the family. It's laid out such that you come in order and pay. They will deliver to your table and you place the excess dishes in a tub near the menus. This is a hole in the wall Venezuelan. When the line is long, there's extra menus located along the wall to your left. I had the beef quesadillas the last time I went. As a petite female, it was two meals worthy. I needed a quick lunch before heading to the airport and was in the incredibly long line for the sandwich shop next door, but El Callejon smelled so good so I ditched the sandwich line and went to El Callejon. I ordered one pupusa (chicken and something else?) and the coconut lemonade. It was so tasty and definitely hit the spot way more than a sandwich would have. I've never had coconut lemonade before I'll certainly be ordering it again should I ever have the chance! The place is small, but the service is fast and the food was great. Picture this, you want to escape the city and find something really quaint, delicious and authentic. It was a couple weekends ago where it was really sunny in Denver. I wanted to leave the city for a bit, so we drove into Golden to walk around all the shops and find a restaurant. I am so, so, happy that we stumbled upon this neighborhood jam! Some of the best Poopoo says and quesadillas that I've ever had. Now, it's a small place, but sometimes it's the small places that pack the biggest punch. This tiny restaurant was hidden behind the line for the Deli next door, but we decided we were in the mood for tamales anyway. My husband and I were staying in Golden for two days and ended up coming here two days in a row for lunch, because it was wonderfully delicious. Note: My husband has celiac and ate exceedingly well here. Everything gluten free is labeled very well and there weren't any contamination issues (not more than usual when traveling and eating out I suppose). We ate Columbian tamales, sweet corn arepas, chicken tacos, and spinach and mushroom pupusas with the coconut lemonade. My husband is planning to revamp his tamale recipe to be more like the ones we had. So amazing. The flavors in the taco were a wonderful mix of spicy, tangy, and fresh. Drove out from downtown Denver to get away. Great location; walking distance to Clear Creek, etc. It is tiny... seats maybe 20 inside and another 10 outside. Don't recall seeing anything kid oriented on the menu. I ordered the Colombian Plate w/ chorizo for $6.00. The black beans and chorizo were flavorful, and my sweet corn arepa was tasty. But I felt like the portion size could have been larger (two hours later and I'm hungry). I did ask for mine with no cheese, but it came with cheese sprinkled on it anyway. Also, be very clear if you are taking it to go. I asked for mine to go; after the group of 4 who ordered after me were served at their table, I had to kindly ask where my order was. Chicken Papusa is worth the 30+ min drive everytime! Prices are very affordable too, honestly this restaurant is probably the cheapest and highest quality in the whole state. If you are in the mood to try something different and want to avoid tourist traps or rip offs, come here! The lady who runs the register is always smiling. The few times there has been a younger girl working she was nice too. The "dad" of the operation is always cooking or cleaning. You can tell he's proud of his restaurant- they all are and Im glad to have them around. My only reason for knocking off a star, is that I've probably made the long drive 2-3 times in the past year, only to find out they were closed.
