Absolutely outstanding food and service. I am so excited to have a quality restaurant enter that space. Happy to have them in Lemon Grove. We had the fish tacos and shrimp tacos (which me and my wife split) and a "Hot Cali" roll. They were all delicious and my only regret is that I didn't snap a pic for the review. We fell upon El Cata because we were looking for a Mexican seafood restaurant. It just opened less than a month ago. It's nicely decorated with a patio. There's live music on Fridays and Saturdays. We were excited to eat here. The concept of sushi and Mexican food was a bit confusing. The menu was confusing. Lots of items we were unfamiliar with and there was no explanation of each dish. The prices were pretty high for everything except the sushi. ( $22 for a shrimp cocktail appetizer, $12 for a small glass of wine )The service was outstanding. The flashing disco lights were disturbing. The band was mariachi style. Not our cup of tea but fun. We left scratching our heads, wondering who the target audience for this restaurant is. We had sushi which was really good and on par with some of the better sushi we've had. We also had fajitas. The portion was extremely small and wasn't served on the usual sizzling platter, but on a plate with salad. The meat was tender but only a couple of vegetables. It didn't come with sour cream, guacamole or salsa. There were no beans. It came with a clump of steamed rice which was not seasoned or tasty. For a weekend night the place was empty. We walked into this restaurant tonight for dinner. We sat at a high table in the bar. The chairs are an oatmeal colored cloth. My chair was dirty. My wife ordered chipotle shrimp and I ordered a chicken burrito and asked that the salsa Fresca be left off. When I got my burrito it was filled with salsa Fresca. I asked that it be remade and the waitress impolitely refused to make the meal right. We decided to walk out due to the poor attitude and crappy service. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!!!! We were so looking forward to El Cata's opening and finally ate there Saturday, 2/1 around 4:30pm. Excellent salsa and chips. Very friendly and attentive staff. Easy parking. good portion sizes and reasonably priced for todays's economy. My husband ordered the salmon which he enjoyed. I ordered the shrimp and octopus appetizer - tasty but far too hot (I've enjoyed this same dish at 3 other local restaurants where the spicyness was just right. Unfortunately we plan never to revisit El Cata because of the indoor mariachi band - the music (while good) was extremely loud, so much so that conversation was impossible. read more

I woke up this morning feeling a sudden urge to have some Hispanic cuisine going through my body. So I landed on el Cata. I had heard lots of positive reviews for this place so I came to try the tacos. I orders three tacos which were carne asada, carnitas, and pollo asada. I meet the cashier who helped make the food and asked if I could use the bathroom. Soon after as I was urinating someone reached from behind and started to insert their fingers behind me. It was the most pleasant experience I ever had in a taco shop. I mean what better service could you ask for? After it was all done and I emptied there I turned around and saw it was the cook who had just done that to me. Best part was he didn't wash his hands and went straight to making my food. Our waitress was absolutely wonderful. Attentive everything you want in a waitress they have changed what used to be a very closed in Restaurant to very open. It's really very very nice and the chairs are comfortable. Even the ones that are the high ones they're not they're not so high that I'm gonna die. Now the food had a little problem. I got the enchilada Sue is, and my girlfriend got the fish tacos the fish tacos one fish taco will fill you up. It was very very good but for me in the price and everything you need some maybe some rice with it we shared and I gave her some of my day you get three of the seafood tacos with a green sauce on it that is very rough. It needs to be blended. More needs a little lemon juice in it and it needs to be a little bit more fish or shrimp or whatever inside of the enchilada it came with the rice and a small salad and I'm personally I really did not care for it Wasn't my thing. They did have a fried banana dish that was absolutely out of this world. I really enjoyed that we made a couple of recommendations to the waitresses about different things and they seem to agree with us. One thing is a hot salsa. As far as the waitress was concerned it was not hot as far as my tongue was Concerned Yeah it was. It was warmer than I needed and they only have one kind of salsa. They need something like the Gallo or something that's you know just tomato and a little bit of onion or something or some with maybe some some small amount of jalapeños they do have their own hot sauce brand that they have. It's some coconut with habaneros and I think it's pineapple with habaneros if you mix those together, they're not bad but I think it's more of a high class they think restaurant food and it overall it's expensive so that's just me and The it was OK but it wasn't. It wasn't me. I may go back there someday, but it won't be soon. read more
