First time dining in, usually only come here for dessert. So far what I have had has been decent, nothing stands out in particular except for the excellent service. The wait staff is very attentive, takes care of any mishaps with food or drink orders. There wasn't a lot of foot traffic (Friday evening) so I'm assuming maybe the majority of the people that come in are local. The restaurant is also next to what looks like a newly renovated or built hotel and a community on the other side. There are lovely roses, surrounding the building, and on the inside, there are lots of spiritual aesthetic that provides a warm welcoming. Very disappointing. We should have been tipped off when we came here on a Saturday night, with a local car show in Sumner right down the street happening, and this restaurant wasn't busy in the slightest. The locals obviously know something we did not. I ordered the seafood chimichanga. Was supposed to include "shrimp, scallops, and crab meat", but I could quite honestly barely notice anything beyond a few tiny fragments of anything resembling seafood inside the pathetically small burrito. It was basically a tiny fried tortilla, no bigger than a hot pocket. My wife ordered shrimp salad and it was a few pieces of shrimp on iceberg lettuce with some shredded cheese and diced tomatoes thrown on. Also, be prepared for this place to nickel and dime you on the bill: they charged us an extra $1.50 for each extra salsa after the first one that came with chips. Who does that? Never in all my years have I seen a Mexican restaurant do that! Also, they charge for soda refills too. And even worse, the server didn't tell us when we ordered any of those refills. And speaking of servers, our server seemed put out and rolled her eyes any time we asked for anything at all. We were a very low maintenance table and the place was not busy at all. Heaven forbid we ask for a fork or an extra napkin, or worse yet an extra salsa that they're planning to charge us for anyway, lol! The servers and hostess seemed more interested in playing on their phones in a booth by the kitchen than waiting on the customers. Needless to say, we won't ever be coming back here. Food is good and server was friendly. However, there is an absurd policy of charging $2 for extra salsa. It's a bit unnerving when you pay nearly $200 for your dinner plus tip (there were four of us) and see a charge of $2 for extra salsa. Pretty chintzy if you ask me. This used to be our favorite Mexican restaurant but things have really changed. Waitstaff make many mistakes and don't seem to have any sense of urgency. I had doubts about trying this restaurant again, as the first time with that owner was a nightmare. Coffee filters used in the chip baskets and the grossest cloths to wipe the tables. I tried again for a work lunch and it was great! The new owners/chefs whatever the change is great. We visit the El Charro in Kent so thought we would drop into this one. They are no where near the same. The service here is horrible. One of the employees brought their kids to work with them so a couple of the employees spent their time watching/playing with the crying child instead of making sure the customers were satisfied. We asked for more salsa for our chips and we got salsa but was never asked if we wanted more chips. My food was so hot I couldn't eat it. Not sure why the plate was 4000 degrees but it made my food inedible. Not sure why this El Charro is so different than the Kent location but we won't be coming back. read more

The restaurant looked clean food came quickly and the portions were good size I enjoyed the sea food chimechanga and my bride had the #1 which is a steak sautéed in onions etc however it was LOADED. Overall Good food. I used to frequent often and could tell when the regular cook was off as the flavors where not as good, but, all in all everything I have ordered has been good. The only thing is portions. The order we received today looked like a kids meal, 1 enchilada and the rice and beans measured to be a little over 1 tablespoon... super odd and annoying. I had dinner here once before and really liked it, other then the chips. This is why I am giving it a 2 star versus just 1. I ordered the exact same thing the second time which was a taco salad, no sour cream, no gaucamole, no shell, extra lettuce. When my taco salad came there was barely any cheese and I do mean barely. The lettuce was about 1 cup of shredded lettuce over this very large amount of ground beef. I mixed this altogether and you could not even see any visible lettuce, it just looked like ground hamburger. I asked for more lettuce and was given about 3/4 cup which seemed to really put them out, even though they were not busy. I had a few bites after being careful not to mix it up again. I will never go there again. Not the cleanest place, poor service and they act like inexpensive iceberg lettuce is a priceless commodity. read more

Took a bit to get the chips and salsa. The chips had hot and cold in the basket. After that I waited a significant amount of time for my order to be taken. Ordered Enchiladas la crema. Not sure what the sauce was but it's supposed to be white and creamy. I got something that was white with orange shimmery stuff mixed in. I did not finish my meal. My server never refilled my water - although I watched her fill others. Never asked if I wanted another drink $$ never asked how my meal was. Some of the worst service I've experienced in awhile. I heard great things about this restaurant and was looking forward to trying it out but was very disappointed. They charge extra for even one refill of chips. The salsa is just hot. What mainly caused me to write the review was the fact that our order was wrong multiple times. I ordered veggie fajitas and got a burrito drowning in cheese. Our son ordered Street tacos...no issues there. Our daughter originally said grilled cheese but changed to macaroni and cheese. The server brought out the grilled cheese & we weren't sure who that was for. The restaurant wasn't busy at all but we had to ask for drink refills several times. I went three times, each time I ordered the "authentic chili rellano" off the menu and all three times they said they were out. Lived in Puyallup for 11 years, always go to Puerto Vallarta, but they were extraordinarily busy tonight. Decided to try El Charro. NEVER AGAIN. Took over 10 minutes for someone to take our order. Food is is bland and small portions. We had to ask for refills, and they weren't busy at all. We had to wait almost 10 minutes to pay, and we had a nasty surprise....there was only one refill allowed on sodas. We were charged extra. Had been to this Mexican restaurant once about 15yrs ago. My daughter and I were close by and had an Entertainment coupon for it so we stopped in for lunch. The first experience was not impressive, just recall thinking I could make much better myself at home, really bland. This visit was a little better thankfully but the service was really SLOW. The one salsa that looked like a salsa was decent, the other was more of a Pico chunk no sauce style looked less appetizing being off in vibrant color as if made a couple days earlier but tasted ok. Meals came out and much to our surprise looked really good. I ordered a Chalupa and Enchilada w/rice and beans. The chalupa was large and shell hot and perfectly crispy with chicken that although wasn't really spiced, was very juicy/tender. The cheese enchilada, beans and rice all pretty good, nothing real special but no complaints. My daughter had a seafood chimichanga w/rice and beans, she enjoyed it. I had a bite and thought it was on the fishy smell/taste side but as long as she liked it. The server did come did call out from a couple tables away if we wanted a soda refill and brought one on timely manner this time as the few other tables had cleared by then. She did apologize and thank us for our patience, so not sure if under staffed or what but service was a clear issue for our visit. We presented our coupon when she brought the bill only for her to tell us that since it was new owners recently they weren't honoring the coupon....seeing my added frustration she said she would go ahead an take off HALF the value of the coupon, meaning 5.50 instead of 11.00. My family stopped by this mexican restaurant for a quick bite to eat before seeing a play at the Manestage Theater. We were seated quickly as there were only a few tables occupied. The menu was expansive which was nice and we were able to find something quickly.The food, however was not good at all. I'll start with the mexican rice. Clumpy, bits of it hard as thought it had been sitting in a warming dish all day long and SUPER SUPER SALTY. I even mentioned it to our waiter since all 4 of us had the same problem, thinking he may want mention it to the cook. However he did not return to our table. Hubbys arroz con pollo was mediocre at best. And the kids 1/2 quesadillas with beans and rice would have been ok, had they not slathered the beans on top of the quesadilla and had a salt lick instead of mexican rice. $50.00 later we were on our way to never return. read more

We came here after reading Terri O's review. After a near hour long drive and arriving about 25 minutes before close, they turned off the open sign as we pulled into the lot. The good people of Yelp decided to delete my review because it didn't qualify as a "Customer Experience." Personally, I think people should know when a business is unreliable, and closing early is unreliable. That said, we did come back a month later, I didn't update my review because the food was average at best and not a good value as the portion was small and we didn't even get our chip basket refilled. It was slow that afternoon and we only saw two other parties there, but the young attractive server never checked on us, hence no refills of drinks, chips and salsa. I know good Mexican and am no stranger to southern California. There is no spirit, heritage or authenticity to the flavor here. Growing up in Tucson, AZ, El Charro is a legend. The nation's oldest mexican food restaurant to be owned by the same family since it opened, the birthplace of the chimichanga, and a dependable source for fantastic mexican food. That said, El Charro in Sumner has absolutely nothing to do with El Charro in Tucson. It's certainly not as good. It still serves up some very decent grub though. Huge burritos, kind staff, and the family oriented feel really help this place out. So-so salsa served in a plastic jar, long waits for food, and some interesting ingredient choices bring the place down. Interesting ingredient choices = putting parmesan cheese on a burrito. Cotija can even be purchased as Safeway these days... I'm not sure what the problem is. Not as good as the El Charro I grew up adoring, but a friendly place to have some Mexican food. read more

Tonight we were in Sumner and decided to try the El Charro restaurants. When I have had discussions on what makes a good restaurant - besides the normal things (food) - I always say it is the greeter. They set the mood for the experience. On a scale of 1-5 - the greeter gets a 1 (5 being the high). They were not busy - only one or two other tables - and a simple "Hi - thanks for coming in" would have been nice. All we got from him was "Two - OK follow me". Sort of the personality of the phone voice that tells you "press one for English two for non-English." He marched us to the table - sat us and said, "What kind of drinks could I get you". Perhaps a simple, "nice night outside " or something could have helped - after a little more of this I finally asked him if we were inconveniencing him by coming in - think arriving at a restaurant 4 minutes before they close and they all want to go home attitude. Fortunately the waitress made up for it. Friendly, happy and helpful. She did a great job. The food at best is bland. I am not one for spicy or hot food but this food would work well in a nursing home - no upset stomachs. In summary - the greeter is misnamed, the waitress was great and the food OK. read more

New owners, I believe out of California took over this restaurant, and the food is authentic and excellent. I have been there five or six times and have not been disappointed. If you like spice, ask for their "Tapatio" it is made right there, and it is awesome! Not too hot and excellent flavor. The service is good. We were taken care of, however the waitress is not very friendly. Makes me think she doesn't really like her job, however others are friendly and helpful. You will find a lot if items on their menu that you won't find in your typical Mexican restaurant chain. Definitely worth checking out! read more

The server also stood in the front greeting area and picked her teeth with a tooth pick. The water glasses are to small (especially when your table is not visited often by the server), the salsa comes out in a tiny jar like dish, the chips barely fits into the salsa dish.
