***this place isn't El Charro anymore** I grew up eating at El Charro and was sad to hear it closed last year. I heard recently that it reopened with new owners and a new menu. My husband and I paid a visit a couple of days ago for dinner and were pleasantly surprised. The staff went out of their way to help me and my husband pacify our 20 month old so we could enjoy our very tasty and boozy margaritas (well worth the price for a change) and our food seemed like higher quality then the previous owners/menu offers. It was a quick in and out but we will for sure be back! Yum! Side notes for people who frequented the previous El Charro. The booths were replaced so it gives the place a fresh feeling and menu prices are a bit more expensive but I feel it's higher quality. read more

I cannot praise this place enough! I went in as a vegan expecting to probably have a burrito with some beans, lettuce, and salsa. Not a chance. Flavio, whom I must admit is probably the most charismatic cook/owner/waiter I have ever met, told me he would make me a fantastic and vegan burrito that would blow my mind. He did not lie. My burrito was full of delicious, perfectly cooked vegetables and topped with extra vegetables with a perfect hot sauce across the top accompanied with rice and beans. DELICIOUS. This place was so much better when the elders owned it. As soon as they retired and sold to their younger family it went so down hill. It used to be the BEST Mexican restaurant and the BEST service. Now the food is horrible , salsa is the worst , service is terrible. I wish the grandpa would come back and put that place back in shape. I drive all the way to Orting for good Mexican good. So I have two major cons which rate this a 3 versus a 4: 1) the waitress did not clarify whether my son was getting the adult plate versus the child's plate so we were charged the adult price. 2) There was no real interaction with the greeter/waitress/check out guy other than taking our order. On the plus side, the food was delicious! They were able to accommodate our requests to add or subtract things to our burritos and I LOVE their mexican pizza appetizer! I am a sucker for most crispy/fried items! We will be visiting again and I hope next time the atmosphere has a more upbeat and positive vibe! read more

My rating is based on my takeout experiences as I haven't been able to dine in. I will say that their building is cute and I love all the roses they have planted around it. An enjoyable meal, my parents come to this Mexican restaurant a lot and we met them there for an early Father's Day dinner. First thing we noticed was the restaurant was very clean, chips were fresh and warm, salsa was fresh. Food was good, not the best Mexican I have ever had but really good. The only negative was the servers were not very attentive considering we were the only ones there before the dinner rush and slightly high prices for a Mexican place in a small community but we will defiantly be back. read more

Oh my was this a waste of money. I don't know where to start. Meals are overpriced for what they are, the asada is tasteless, the kids meals are $5-$6 bucks and does not come with rice or beans. It's alright. Food tastes like any other Mexican restaurant around the area. Service for someone to take your drink and food order is really slow. Getting the actual food didn't take very long though. And she did come check on us a few times throughout our meal. We were in and out within an hour, but it seemed as if they were short staffed both times I've been in, so the beginning of your time here isn't the fastest. Brief but informative!!! 7pm on a Friday night, had to loop the parking lot twice to find a spot. Waited a couple minutes to be seated. The house special that night happened to be my absolute favorite "Tacos El Pastor." Being as I have eaten this in several places and countries, I have a fair amount of experience as to what I should be getting. The El Pastor was FANTASTIC and the service was attentive and informative. Now if you know Renton, and you have eaten at La Hacienda which is another great South end Mexican restaurant then when I say El Charros is truly a great place for Mexican and has surpassed La Hacienda in my list of favorite places to eat, then you know it must be great. My first time trying el churro was for a family function. The service was awesome and food was ok to. It was the aftermath of it all. Not only did I but my sisters fiance both became ill with food poising, it was not fun times at all. Three years later and it being a local resturant I tried it again (something else) I asked if I could get my meal with flour tortillas instead of corn tortillas. he suggested a different dish.I understand the employee (the owners daughters husband) was making a suggestion but I asked him three times for flour tortillas. long story short I had a long day and decided to go with his suggestion. If I could give El Charro zero stars, I would. My company celebrates every birthday at a Mexican restaurant; we very recently moved from Auburn to Sumner and decided to give El Charro a chance. We will not be going back. My boss got a head count and called THE DAY BEFORE to inform them of our 22 person party and ask if they could handle that, as well as inquired if we could all pay separately, as we were used to doing at our old spot. She was told yes, no problem at all. It took almost 20 minutes before they came to take our order. 30 minutes later, food started coming out. About half our party got their food a good 20 minutes before the remaining people got theirs. One person never got their food at all (after being there for literally 2 hours) and 5 of us (myself included) got our food after everyone else at the table was done eating and ready to pay. We were never given refills on drinks, or even asked if we wanted them. We sat around for about 20 minutes without our checks being brought. My boss finally went to track someone down to get our bills. The waitress wanted each of us to come up to the register in the order we ordered our food. When one employee wanted to pay for herself and two other meals, she was asked to wait til the end of the line to do so. One person handed her a 20 dollar bill and was promptly asked if she had smaller bills (for an $11 tab). I personally used my debit card and was not given my copy of the receipt; when I asked for one, she acted as if it was a huge inconvenience. The man who never got his food was still charged for his drink. Some of the people who received their food late didn't have to pay, but others (myself included) did have to. The worst part, when we were all standing in line waiting our turn, she called another customer not in our party up to pay and let him cut in front of everyone. As a company, we will certainly not be going back. As someone who grew up in Sumner, and LOVES the atmosphere of this town, I am embarrassed at the experience we endured. This place is a joke. Screwed up my order last time with missing items. Ordered again via DoorDash (I guess I should have learned my lesson). 30 minutes later they canceled the order saying they are "now closed." They were open when we ordered at 5:30pm, and they were scheduled to be open until 9pm. They couldn't give us a courtesy call saying they were closing and couldn't honor the order? We ate there a few times before Covid, and their staff is pretty rude. I guess there's no surprise with this. Trying to be understanding during Covid, I've really tried to give this place a 3rd and 4th chance considering we live in Sumner. Needless to say this will be the last time we ever order anything from them. It's so unfortunately given the fact that we are so limited with Mexican food restaurants in our city. I ordered the carne asada and when I got my food, I noticed the smell of cigarettes. Being pregnant, I've been sensitive to smells, and assumed it was the guest that was getting up to leave behind me. I waited until they were gone to start eating. Upon my first bite, the meat tasted a bit charred and I smelled the after taste of cigarette smoke. Again, being pregnant, I thought it was just my hormones acting up. I figured the meat was just way over cooked, and coated it with the rice, beans and sour cream to try to cover up what I thought was over-cooked meat. After finishing 3/4 of it, I couldn't take it anymore. I had my husband try it and asked him if there was anything strange about it. Immediately he said it smelled like cigarettes!! I was so disgusted and upset with myself for assuming that it was just my hormones. I didn't want bring it up to the waitress because it would have made me too emotional and upset, so we promptly paid our bill and left. On the upside, I didn't end up getting sick that night. My husbands order of shrimp fajitas on the other hand was smoke free and tasted average. This also was on Valentine's Day (2018), a night you'd assume they'd be trying their best. read more

Delicious food. Spicy salsa, great sauces, crispy hot chips, tasty drinks, fluffy rice, consistently prepared and all for a great price. I have been going here for years and it stays the same, which is so nice when business's seems to shut down and reopen as something else all the time. The staff is extremely welcoming and friendly. The food comes out fast and hot. The mole is the best I have ever had. They have a good variety on the menu as well, so there is always something new to try. Awful. I ordered a chicken burrito and got what I would call a chicken enchilada. It was canned, unseasoned and barely warm in a flour tortilla covered in enchilada sauce and cheese. Rice and beans on the side. No lettuce, no sour cream. This was not a burrito and it was an awful enchilada. My husband had their spinach burrito and it was nothing more than frozen spinach wrapped in a flour tortilla with canned green sauce on top. I don't think this place actually makes any fresh food or has any imagination regarding their recipes. I will not be eating at this "restaurant " again. read more

My husband and I went here yesterday for a late lunch. The hostess greeted us as soon as we entered. She sat as at a nice, clean booth with a view of the street. We were promptly served waters, chips and salsa. Shortly after the chips arrived our waitress came over, she was sitting at another table eating when we came in so that felt a little odd, but she was very prompt. I had the pollo la crema and it was absolutely delightful. The sauce was great, the chicken was lean and all white meat and there was an ample amount of mushrooms. Our first time here and we were pleasantly surprised. From some of the reviews we were a little leary, but glad we tried it. Our food was very good, the chips came with salsa and a type of pico that was very good. The waitress was very nice and attentive. The food was wonderful as always, service however, was ridiculous. The woman didn't refill our drinks, didn't ask how our food was, never brought my side of sour cream. There was only three tables in the whole restaurant, not busy at all. My boyfriend and I are in our mid twenties so I figured she probably just thought we weren't worth the service since younger people have a tendency not to tip as well? Who knows! I'm a server myself and it KILLS me when someone can give full service to one table and not to another based off of whatever opinion they may have for whatever reason. The first time we went to eat here, I was with my son who is 2 and we had a great time and awesome service. The food was good. We just went today and we had unsatisfactory service. I ordered from the kids menu from what I thought, for my children and they brought my son's food on a oven hot plate. He is 6, and before I could stop him he grabbed it and burned his fingers. I took him in the bathroom and ran cold water over his hands and then asked if my other son who is 2 quesadilla could come on a cold plate. She did tell me that all the plates come that hot. I hope they change that when it comes to their kids menu. Also getting a $5 quesadilla that doesn't come with rice or beans, which I thought you got to choose beans and rice or French fries. I had to add a additional $4 for rice and beans. I had to grab napkins and silverware from the other table and then my kids went up front to ask for a box and once again to pay. I wasn't too happy. I also never write bad reviews because I am a waitress & know that not all experiences out to eat are perfect and sometimes people make mistakes, but this didn't even get any sympathy or apology for the service or my son burning both his hands. I won't go back. I felt really bad for my son. The only reason I'd like to post this review is so future parents can have caution about the plates so their children don't get hurt. read more

Probably one of the worst Mexican places I've been to. The food was okay... the cheese in my enchilada wasn't melted so that was a huge turn off. By far this is the worst service at any restaurant!!! First we weren't brought chips, only salsa and we had to go find someone after waiting for 15 minutes to get chips. Then probably three people walked by before we then had to get up and find someone to refill our salsa and drinks. Not impressed at all with the service.
