Came here on a saturday afternoon in search of a good happy hour deal. The nice thing about El Coco is that they do all day happy hour which includes $5 margs, $3 empanadas, and $4 tacos. Upon entering, we were able to get a table for 8 without making a reservation, which was great. We ended up ordering multiple margarita pitchers to share among us, and it did the trick! I also ordered the beef empanada, which was solid, but nothing showstopping. I enjoyed the ambience of the restaurant and found it to be a nice play to gather with my friends and have a drink. This place is really new so they still have a lot of kinks to work out. I love the idea that they have $5 margaritas all day. The cups are small and loaded with ice though so that may not be quite the deal that it's being presented to be. Nonetheless, the margaritas are mixed well and the flavors they offer are great. The chips tasted fresh like they were possibly made in house. That was a present surprise. I was a little disappointed by the small amount of guacamole provided for the guacamole order. I ordered the steak burrito. It was okay. They had a DJ playing live which I though was cute. You can see the upstairs booth from your table. The service was a bit clumsy. After we had finished our meal, two plates came to our table and we had to tell the servers we didn't order that. They seemed to be confused and it occurred to me that they have to count the tables in order to fingered which number table it is. Small fix- just label the tables. This happened multiple times during the visit and if they want to grow, this is something that's going to have to get ironed out pretty quickly. $7 a taco should not be a thing the food is fine but you should only go here if you're planning on not talking to anyone in ur group because u cannot hear a thing. Also the waiters were so pushy i was like damn stop rushing me. I'd be eating and they'd come over and be like "are you done with that? Are u done with that?" And stack the plates so loud right next to you. The ambiance could improve. Beat in mind the tacos are normal street sized tacos. Don't be fooled by that $7 price tag. My favorite was the barbacoa tacos, the chicken one was ok. The bowls looked really good but we didn't get those. The drinks were really good as well and did the job, you can order doubles as well. I'm digging this spot. Came by this weekend to catch up with a friend. My partner didn't want to come because he said the place looked 'too girly'. It's very loud in color palette. The outside and inside is mostly pink and green with bright pink chairs, bright pink neon sign about tacos. The main draw for me honestly was seeing they have $5 cocktails all day/night. In Chelsea that's unheard of. Anyway, I was skeptical because the drinks are kind of tiny. I tried both the regular margarita and pina colada. He said the pina colada was too strong and not mixed right. But he dumped it over crushed ice for me anyway. It was tasty. The margarita also wasn't too bad for being made with sour mix I had low expectations. My friend really liked his jalapeno marg which for flavors and a different cocktail it's marked at $8. Still not a bad deal. Frozen sangria was the only one I didn't get to on the $5 deal. And all bottled beers (mostly Mexican brands) are only $5. I tried some appetizers which the food is insanely cheap as well here. I think you can get like an entire burrito or burrito bowl for $7-9. I ended up going with the shrimp taco ($5) and a pizza empanada ($3). The shrimp taco wasn't worth it. It was a skimpy little thing stuffed with the world's tiniest shrimp. Something I'd find out of a trader joe's pre-cooked baby shrimp bag and wouldn't be surprised if that was where they came from. Adorned with cilantro, chives and a wedge of lime and that's it. Go the empanada or go the more bang for your buck with the burrito I'd say route. The empanada was quite good. The exterior of it had a really nice taste which is weird saying. I rarely comment on the quality of empanada pastry dough but I was really into it. Yeah, the bar is a little loud (flamboyant kind of loud). They were playing some Ricky Martin at one point. Everyone was super nice with service. I actually ended up returning later in the day because my partner got fomo. Go figure and we had a round there. I heard of El Coco online and thought it would be the perfect spot for my friend and I to catch up. We came around 6 pm and immediately felt the vibe. Tables were almost full, Bad Bunny was playing, and the pink walls with neon lights set up a fun and lively atmosphere. We sat outside- which was perfect considering the 72° weather. Both of us were shocked at how inexpensive the menu prices were. $5 margs all day? And they're strong too? That's something you don't find in NYC often. Can't complain. While ordering food I asked the server if they made Shirley temples she said yes, but my food came and still no drink to be found, kept asking her about it and she yelled "it's coming it's coming", After some time I asked again and she said "shrimp is coming", I corrected her and said I ordered a Shirley temple drink not shrimp but she claims she doesn't know what that is. I checked out El Coco's Chelsea location last night and truly enjoyed everything from the service, to the food, and especially the drinks. Our server was Carlos and he was a great help when we asked for recommendations or suggestions off of the menu. We tried the El Coco Margarita which is a coconut flavored margarita (as per his recommendation) and it was delicious! Definitely will order again when I go back. My favorite was the empanadas - especially the spinach and cheese and shrimp and crab meat. Delicious! They have all day happy hour with $5 margaritas - you really can't beat that. It's so beautiful inside & of course they play great music! They have a location on the UWS and and Hell's Kitchen. I'd come back as a walk in and sit at the bar for the tacos but that's it Visited the 8th st location recently with a group of six, we had a 9:30 reservation on a Saturday night and had to wait for around 25 minutes before we were sat. There was no host, We weren't greeted by anyone when we walked in and had to flag down one of only like three servers that were all running around, and two bartenders. This place is apparently known for their $5 margaritas and inexpensive food. The margaritas came in very small glasses that were filled with ice, I finished my first drink after like 4 sips. They also have frozen pina coladas that were tasty but none of the drinks are strong. I ordered about 5 drinks and left feeling pretty sober. The tacos were delicious, especially the shrimp and steak taco. We were served two different types of empanadas which was odd. The first ones we received were in a rather hard crunchy crumbly shell and the filling was kind of bland. The next ones we received were in a traditional wrapping and the filling tasted better and looked like the photos online. We ended up being here less than an hour and we're rushed to order drinks as soon as we arrived because the bar was closing before 10pm but they supposedly close at 11... we weren't told why until we were getting ready to leave I asked and they said there was a pipe burst in the kitchen.. I know this place opened recently, so there may be growing pains, but there are quite a few. The quesadilla was very boring (and why was the rice inside?) and barely tasted like it had been on the grill. It came with a couple of chips and a side of sour cream but no salsa, which I had to ask for. I also didn't understand how the menu was put together, which I learned wasn't my fault because, according to the bartender, they printed the menu incorrectly, so he had to explain to me how to order. The frozen piña colada machine wasn't working so I just got sort of a half frozen piña colada. The only thing I enjoyed here was the spinach and cheese empanada, which would be the only thing I would recommend. The place was very empty, but at one point I counted seven employees who were just standing around talking or were on their phones. The bartender was the only one who was actually doing any work of any kind. The music was really loud for an empty restaurant. I wish them luck but this is not a place I will go back to. read more

We decided to go get drinks at El coco since we read great reviews about their drinks however, Jazmin the bartender was very rude and received us with mean looks and proceeded to tell us we arrived early and it was closed And wouldn't stop questioning us. It was 12:05 so we asked why she was mad when we just wanted to get good customer service. Her tone was disgusting dirty as you can see on this picture she arrived to the job scene dirty. Her black top was fully dirty with white stains. We wondered why she was so hostile and mean and asked her. She just told us in a bad manner we should leave. This pretty place is really popular, bar as well as main room. Food is inexpensive and tasty. My chicken 'burrito bowl' was a tu that - no burrito, just a bowl, with chicken, jack cheese, black beans and roasted corn. Guacamole was out so they brought me perfectly ripe slices. My friends had rice and shrimp, and rice and chicken - both large and delicious portions. Dessert was a bit strange - rice pudding was actually soup-like, but yummy. Flan and churro took a while longer to be served "so they're cooked fresh", but we wished we could have ordered them earlier in that case. But both were perfect. The churro, cut in half with bitter chocolate sauce on the side, was slim, fresh and hot. The flan was simple perfection. Two missteps - the music is so loud table talk needs to be shouted - our server tried to lower it a bit. That same lovely server disappeared mid-meal, to be reassigned elsewhere. We discovered the staff routinely'rotates' for some reason. To us, this was a bit jarring and we'd have preferred his service throughout. Be warned - tables are really cramped together, stairs down to the washrooms are steep and small...hold the handrail or risk a tumble. They don't serve coffee!!! Who does that? Would have gone so well with desserts. But on the whole El Coco (with three other locations) has a winning formula....good food, friendly service, decent prices. read more

I was walking by this place last month on the way to a doctor's appointment and decided to go in and get something to go (since I was fasting before the appointment and couldn't eat right then). It was a weekday around 2pm so the place was pretty much empty. I ordered from the bartender, who was a nice gentleman, and it was pretty quick. I got a few different empanadas and they were all pretty good when I got a chance to eat them later. Can't speak to any of the other food or drinks. Came here very last minute to meet up with my mom. We were in such a deep conversation i forgot to take pictures of the food. I still wanted to leave a review, because the service was excellent. I must say it's a good deal . The drinks are small so plan to buy a few to get a buzz lol i love me some margaritas. My mom ordered arroz con pollo ( chicken with rice) that was a decent size she couldn't finish it. Boxed it up to go. I had two chicken tacos they are like tapas size. They were good. The chicken empanadas i did not like. I didn't realize it was corn breading. I don't like that. It was small but a decent size for the price. Chips and guacamole was delicious. He refilled the chips. Carlos was our waiter and he was phenomenal. Will definitely come again. I only reason i didn't give 5 stars is because the bathroom is behind the bar almost and you have to go down a steep staircase.
