I approached him; smiled and said "hello, two for dinner please", he became visibly angry, then pointed to a server that was busy setting food on a table for someone. Then he dismissed me. The dinner was good! I came in for the first time on a slow evening. There wasn't many customers eating and there were two waitresses working. I question whether the restaurant owner has expressed to the waitress's that they would like them to stay "busy" while at work. Meaning they are cleaning and doing something at all times even when business is slow. I have worked in restaurants like this. The downside to that is when the restaurant is slow there should not be any cleaning while people are eating. The smell of cleaning products is very unpleasant. There should not be Windex at the bar, cleaning liquor bottles. And there should not be floor cleaner and mopping taking place. read more

Satisfied my craving We are from S. California and were craving Mexican food while up in Long Beach over the holidays and decided to give this restaurant a try. Their food concepts are a little different looking than what I'm used to, but it tastes the same and is good too! See my photo of Flautas...they look very different to what I'm accustomed too but tasted great. Service was good - even at a busy time. Food was what we expected. Honestly the only semi negative thing I can say is the salsa was watery and bland. At least the chips were fresh and warm. Also, the restrooms need updating. We decided to eat here after reading some of the reviews. We barely beat the dinner rush as the place was empty when we arrived, but VERY QUICKLY filled to max occupancy. The one waitress (Victoria?) totally ran the place, and literally ran to help everyone. Even though there were others working, she took all but one order. The drinks were standard and quickly delivered, but we felt a little lost in the croud when we asked for some bean dip for our chips but didn't receive any. The food was excellent and much better than we expected it would be. I agree with Michael H. that the refried beans (so creamy) are worth going out of your way for. We will be making it part of our tradition to stop and eat here every future trip to long Beach. read more

Update: 8/31/22 This is probably my fourth time at El Compadre. It might be my last. The chips were better tonight than on previous occasions, but the food was marginal. But what really caused the reduction in stars for El Compadre was the service tonight. Our server was aloof, lacking personality. But when my wife asked to have her water refilled, he said, 'I guess so.' WTH?!? You guess so?!? Maybe if you were paying attention and refilling people's water, we wouldn't have to ask. We've driven by so many times & always busy. We decided to drive down & give it a shot for dinner in a Friday night. Parking lot was till but we got a table right away. The menus are in the table / thought it was super cool at guest but then not because although I had to pull out my glasses, was a strain to see everything clearly. Margaritas had great fruit flavor but it's on me to make sure to ask next time if there are multiple tequila options or just one kind (as didn't appear to be a bar but later saw a small one in the opposite side of the building)...Food order was also taken & delivered quickly for the busyness. Hands down best Chicken Tortilla soup I've ever had! Highly Highly recommend it. The shrimp cocktail comprise was interesting "warm & soup like" that I'm not entirely sure about...The fajita quesadilla was gigantic & I loved the presentation with the rice & bean holders. Dessert had to be ordered because it was flan...pretty good size portion for the price...I generally am not a fan (in general husband is though) but I gave it a shot. Stopped off for lunch as we hit the edge of town. When you walk in you're hit with colors and decor. Very bright and authentic. The menu was packed with options. I tested out the Pollo en Molle. I fell in love with it in Mexico City and try it out wherever I go. The portions were smaller than most places, and still a decent size. The tortillas seemed fresh and were hot. The molle was good, but not the best. My wife got the enchiladas and that was a good serving. She took half of it home. Our friends enjoyed their burritos. Overall a good place to stop and eat if you want some Mexican in Long Beach. read more

We hit this restaurant because it shared a parking lot with our hotel. First thing we noticed was that they had placed menus under the glass tops of the tables. That's some good thinking in these strange times. No one handling them and easy to read. The margaritas were good and strong. The second round even better. The food was exactly what you expect in a place like this. Good and plentiful. Of course there were chips and salsa. My only complaint is that the chicken chimichanga was quite dry inside a little sauce would have gone a long way. If American style Mexican food is what you like this is the place for you.
