Does this look like a twenty dollar burrito?
    Steven G.

Located at the intersection of Valencia and Houghton, in an area lacking for restaurants. A favorite of many, not sure why. Ambiance/Cleanliness-with the feel of a hotel bar meets lower level mall Mexican restaurant, the ambiance is severely lacking. It's clean...enough. 3 stars Service-Falls down flat...forgotten silverware, having to ask for drink refills, not BAD per se, just below average. 2 stars Food....When good, it's pretty good...slightly above average. The Big Daddy burrito I had yesterday with machaca would have been EXCELLENT, but the tortilla sucked...dry and crumbly....this leads to observation that attention to detail fails. 3 stars It's not a place I avoid, but one that I don't look forward to.

This place is a busy hidden gem on the east side. It's a smaller restaurant with great service. Their chips and salsa were very good. The salsa had great spice. I got a shredded beef chimi and it was good. Their refried beans had great flavor too. Staff were friendly and food came out quickly.

We've driven by a number of times and finally decided to try it out. Overall it was pretty good. Salsa is very good. Tamale fell apart but had decent flavor. Wife didn't like the chili relleno because the egg was burnt and tasted like the flat top. Chili inside was good though. Wife had a margarita and was happy with it. Waiter was very nice and efficient. I'm sure we'll be back.

Second time here and food was average. Ordered their special: birria tacos with rice & beans. Birria was a bit salty, rice tasted old, and beans were average. Service was friendly, but definitely slow. My husband had their enchiladas and enjoyed those with their crema sauce. Their salsa and chips were good, too, but i prefer something a liie more spicy. They have outdoor seating & cool looking interior. Overall, I'm not sure I would return.

Green chili hamburger with sourdough bread

This restaurant was halfway between us and some friends of ours, so we decided to meet for supper there, although none of us had eaten there before. We started with complimentary chips and salsa while we looked through the menu. They have a good menu with many delicious sounding meals. I chose the green chili hamburger. They were able to substitute sourdough bread for the bun, and I picked the side salad rather than the fries. The burger was tasty and juicy, the sourdough bread fried to be crispy, and the salad fresh with lots of cheese on top. I enjoyed it all. My dining companions all enjoyed their meals as well--chicken quesadilla, carne asada tacos, and chicken enchiladas. We all agreed we would definitely go back again.

At the recommendation of the desk host at my hotel this is where dinner was eaten greeted at the door by the hostess and lead to a table, next came the fresh chips and a smokey salsa with just tge right amiunt of flavors & smoke to make your tastebuds to want more. The dinner was very good and filled all the empty places. A clean playe was the final review with some ice tea to top it off myself. This place brings reminders of a step above family restaurant that makes you want to come back again!

Best Mexican and American food in this area. The staff is exceptional and the drinks are blender made. I love this place and recommend it

It was pretty busy when we arrived and they only had one waitress and the bartender. The bartender, Felicia, jumped in to help the other waitress. Both of them were fantastic and handled the crowd expertly. We had the appetizer sampler, which was delicious. However, they were out of pot stickers so we got extra jalapeño poppers. The Tuna Tataki was very tasty and quite a lot for one order. The chicken solo was very tasty also. We had to order the smoked salmon sashimi due to being out of the plain salmon, but it was still delish. The Japanese bagel roll aka Philly roll tasted much better than last time. It tasted freshly made as opposed to the last visit. We really enjoyed our cocktails which were refreshing and yummy. This was a much more enjoyable meal and we were impressed with the service and the food. Great job to all involved, especially our server, Felicia, and we will definitely be back again. I gave it a four only due to being out of two items, but otherwise outstanding.

Once inside, the music was so loud it made it hard to have a normal conversation with my wife about our day. Not a great start for a weeknight dinner. Service was uneven. My wife's food came out in a reasonable time, but my order (spicy tuna roll and sashimi salad) was significantly delayed. Long enough that her meal was getting cold while we waited. There was no communication, no apology, and staff avoided eye contact during the delay. The restaurant didn't appear understaffed, so the holdup was unclear. Food quality was mixed. The sashimi salad was solid and fresh. However, the spicy tuna roll had a noticeable canned-fish smell, which wasn't what I'd expect from a quality sushi roll. My wife's fried rice had an overpowering burnt soy sauce flavor. Between the loud atmosphere, lack of communication from staff, and inconsistent food quality, this wasn't a great experience. We likely won't return, especially with more authentic sushi options that we've had consistently better experiences with. Update: A generic copy/paste apology. No explanation for why my meal was delayed while my wife's got cold. No acknowledgment of staff avoiding communication. No response to the food quality concerns (spicy tuna smelled canned, fried rice tasted burnt). Asking me to email privately doesn't address the public service and quality issues described. Accountability would mean explaining what happened and how it's being corrected; not redirecting the conversation offline.

They have some really cool displays and I love the idea of actual mechanics working on actual hot rods in the garages below. Being a Sunday, no one was down there working but still an awesome idea. The food was average. I had a French dip which was good but not memorable. The menu says it is served with a creamy horseradish sauce however I detected absolutely no horseradish flavor. For my side I did the sweet potato puffs and I was shocked how tiny they were and that the portion was so small. Flavor was just whatever. My guy had a Philly cheesesteak and again, good but not memorable. His side was the mac & cheese. The cheese sauce was really good - tasted of green chiles - but the mac was swimming in it, really not enough macaroni. We had the funnel cake fries for dessert. Flavor was just ok. Dusted with powdered sugar and served with sides of honey, chocolate sauce and more powdered sugar. I'm not sure funnel cake works as fries. They were a little crispy and tough, not fluffy and crispy like a funnel cake. Unfortunately Hot Rods doesn't have a cocktail menu and when I asked if they had any fun drinks, I was told the bartender can make anything I want. I think if they had a cocktail menu with a few fun offerings sitting on the tables, more people would be interested in having something from the bar. Our server was sweet and did a great job. It was her first day and I have high compliments for her. The girl up front who greeted us was pleasant enough but she really didn't know much about the cars or racing memorabilia on display. When asked about the roped off upstairs lounge, she told us it was owned by a local pinball company and they use it for their pinball events. I'm not sure if Hot Rods gets busy but it looks like it could be a great community hangout for folks out that way.

Server Kristi was attentive and friendly. Could kill the country music for the gamecast, she tried after another table also asked haha. 8 TVs on bar side, 9 on the other, not very busy for a Sat night, just 3 other tables. Family side sepated by garage doors had 3 tables. There's a roomy covered Pit Stop patio with pool table, no TVs but heated. Closes early 8PM so make your plans but may cut off those later games.

The menu itself was surprising. For a restaurant advertising itself as Mexican, there were very few actual Mexican entrées to choose from. Instead, the menu was filled with things like hamburgers, hot dogs, wings, and seafood boils, which felt very out of place. Our table ordered a variety of different meals, and not a single person was impressed. My chicken was dry, rubbery, and chewy, and I couldn't even finish my meal because it was so unappetizing. It felt like a complete waste of money. Unfortunately, the poor food quality, questionable cleanliness, and lack of authentic Mexican options mean we won't be returning.
