We were looking for a restaurant in downtown Sonoma for dinner and came across El Dorado. It's a hotel/restaurant, with rooms upstairs and the restaurant spans the bottom floor and out into a patio area. We were seated outside in the patio area and the weather and ambiance were perfect. This review is for the El Dorado Cantina to-go/walk-up window. Seriously one of my fave things about having moved to Sonoma. Vegetarian options 5/5, and the veggie burrito is surprisingly well balanced, yummy slightly citrusy guac and lightly crisped tortilla on the outside. Can eat with your hands with minimal or no mess. Perfect for to go in the plaza or en route on a weekend walk. Oh! And they have churros.. yum! Staff is always super nice. It would be nice if they had smaller to-go bags for smaller orders. Visited a few days ago. We were remarkably pleased at the quality of the food and the service of the staff. I had the asparagus and prosciutto salad followed by the roasted chicken with polenta and mole. My lunch mate had the seared tuna salad. We both enjoyed our meals. I had the most lovely lunch at @eldoradokitchen in Sonoma to celebrate my Mom's birthday! Located in Sonoma square, Executive Chef Armando Navarro knows what he's doing. Everything we ordered was delicious and the service was excellent! I recommend trying this place after wine tasting. We started with the mixed greens salad with pickled vegetables and candied pecans. The dressing on the salad was to die for. We also enjoyed the tostada de pollo made with chicken thighs which was a fiesta in your mouth and not too spicy. The house-made fettuccine de Carbonara was outstanding and they used poblano pepper in the sauce. The hamburger was perfectly cooked with blue cheese and bacon with crispy fries. The paella was sooooo delicious but takes a lil longer to cook so be prepared but definitely worth the wait. This is the second time I've dinned here and each experience keeps getting better. Maybe they were short staffed? Not sure but it was a tad annoying. However we enjoyed our food alot. I had the Tuna Poke bowl which was packed with yummy things - Rice, brussels sprouts, edamame, seaweed, radish, cucumber, avocado, crema, sesame seeds, pepitas, soy marinade, lemon vinaigrette. Very large portion, had to take some home. Lovely presentation. My friend had the risotto - Sweet potatoes, brussels sprouts, pomegranate, mascarpone, parmesan. Very tasty as well. Our favorite was the roasted yellow beet appetizer - came out warm with bits of bacon - really really tasty! Wines by the glass were limited and pricey. Delicious! Arrive on a Wednesday evening thinking it would be quiet, but this place was busy and hopping! We were seated quickly in the back and immediately loved the ambiance of the restaurant. It was casual enough to walk in spontaneous after a day of site seeing, and elegant enough that a fancy date night dinner for two was perfect here too! The servers were knowledgeable and easily recommended gluten free options and the wine choices superb. We ordered a Seafood Paella and a Vegetarian Risotto both to die for! Wow, delicious!!! A group of us decided to have brunch here before visiting some wineries in the area last month. First of all, El Dorado Kitchen is located in the El Dorado Hotel both in downtown Sonoma. Parking can be found on the street or in the surrounding residential neighborhood. With more folks coming out to dine and visit wineries, this area has become much busier and it can be difficult to find parking, especially on the weekends. Once we checked in at the front station, we were directed to our table. Our large group was seated in the back left corner next to a couple of nice windows. We basically ordered what seemed like to be most of their menu to share family style. My favorites were the Truffle Fries, the Brioche French Toast, and the Fried Chicken. We literally did not have the room in our tummies to even think about ordering dessert, which we normally would have for certain. Our waiter and the staff were quite professional and fitting of a restaurant of this caliber. This is a great restaurant in the area for Brunch and New American cuisine. read more

So to start this night off my wife had a Blackberry Mule drink which she said was great Next up was the Butternut Squash soup which was outstanding. Next up we're our entrees. My wife had the Filet which was outstanding. I had the Seafood Paella. When it arrive it appeared the the rice portion of this dish was overcooked which it was. All if the outer portion of the rice was beyond consumption. The chicken sausage was over cooked too. But all if the seafood was amazingly great. So when I said something to the waitress about the rice being overcooked her response was beyond belief. She said that is how they want this dish to come out. How can you cook something that is partially inedible. Her attitude completely changed after that. This meal was not a cheap one to say the least. So my recommendation for this place is to be extremely careful if you decide to try it. I will not be coming back as there are to many other restaurants to try and who know how to cook rice and want your business. read more

Came for dinner with some friends after being in the square. Our waiter was very friendly and helped us pick what we wanted to eat. We always get some truffle fries because the ones here are just the best! We also ordered some wagyu beef carpaccio because our friends had not tried it yet and they really liked it. For dinner I got Housemade Fettuccini the sauce was just amazing on it. The poblano cream gives it a very distinct flavor and just goes well with the rest of the ingredients. My go to drink here is the clear conscience but be careful because it feels like you are just having cucumber water. We ended with their take of the creme brulee and the short bread cookie just makes it that much better. Prices are very reasonable for the amount of food that you get. It is on the pricier side but it in on the square so we were expecting that. We will definitely be back. read more

Pictured: Butterfly cocktail with a poured over purple tea, the interior- I love a good open concept and warm lighting, and seafood paella- tasty and huge! Yes, it's a hotel and a restaurant. No, you don't have to stay here to eat here. Yes, it's excellent and frequently busy -- even though it's bigger than it looks. Four of us showed up for 6:30 reservations and were seated promptly in the back room. Despite being busy, we were quickly offered choice of tap, still, or sparkling water -- nice. We brought a bottle of wine to share and were told it has a $50 corkage fee; that might be challenging for some diners. For every bottle of wine you buy, they waive one corkage fee. We were also reminded that bread service costs extra but passed on it (we'd had a late lunch). The pork belly was the perfect umami: appropriately crunchy on the outside and tender & savory on the inside. As a bonus, there were side scallops. The daily soup was butternut squash and it was quite good. The mixed green salad was also solid, although the fried brussel sprouts were an unexpected inclusion. I chose the chicken breast because I'm partial to mole. I liked it but didn't love it. The chanterelle mushrooms were a nice touch and the polenta was tasty. The risotto was a good choice, with added flavor from truffle oil and an appealing crunch from pomegranate seeds. One of our diners added grilled chicken to her risotto order and it was a very generous portion. Another one splurged. He ordered the filet with 1/2 lobster tail that was offered as a special. With bone marrow and blue cheese creme fraiche, it was a decadent choice which he thoroughly enjoyed. Had a great night at El Dorado Kitchen this weekend. A little rain made street parking simple, so we went in for our 7:30PM Friday night reservation ready to explore the menu. We started with the bread service, roasted maitake mushrooms, truffle fries and a dozen oysters. A glass of the prosecco complimented the oysters perfectly, which was a 1/2 and 1/2 of Atlantic and Pacific varieties. Delish. The truffle fries were as expected, but not as truffle-y as some places make them (read this as a plus). The maitake mushrooms were the surprising standout, presented with a great pesto sauce that we used some of the bread to lap up. The bread itself was great, though, presented with butter and black volcanic salt. For a cocktail between appetizers and entrees, I went with the Switchblade - a mezcal, poblano pepper, pineapple and lime concoction that was really delicious. Smoky but balanced, I could toss a few of these back! For dinner, my mother-in-law and I both had the seafood paella (she added the lobster tail) while my wife had the usual go-to, fettucine carbonara with a poblano twist. I usually go with the pasta, which is phenomenal, but enjoyed the paella. The rice was a little overdone, but the chorizo was perfect - much less greasy than typical chorizo - and the mussels, salmon and shrimp were on point. The standout were the perfectly executed scallops - I could eat a tray of just those. Desserts looked amazing, but at this point we were stuffed to the gills. We'll be back again - don't you worry about that, dessert menu. Great ambiance, terrific service and delicious food make this a must stop when visiting Sonoma. read more

I can to El Dorado Kitchen with some friends back in August. It was my first time ever visiting Sonoma from the east Bay Area. The service was great, they were very patient with us as it was our first time and had a lot of questions. Most of the dishes have small portions so I ordered the homemade fettuccine and added chicken to it and let me say it was the best pasta I ever had! For appetizers, we ordered the wagyu carpaccio, burrata, tuna tartare, and the focaccia and cornbread- all delicious with the carpaccio being the highlight. We were seated in the front room of the restaurant and it was a lot quieter than the other area of the restaurant. My friend had the salmon and loved it. Lastly, for dessert I had the chocolate mousse cake with ice cream. It was really good except the ice cream was melted by the time it got to us. I'll be returning in February to celebrate my sister's upcoming wedding. Looking forward to it! read more

The melt in your mouth short rib omelette was perfectly cooked as it cut like butter with flavorful and tender ribs. Truly the best omelette I've ever tasted. I know that this place usually gets great reviews, but our experience was less than stellar. First of all, this was not a good place for large groups. We had a group of 8 and they sat us at a shared table in the center with these huge centerpieces and it was insanely loud. Then our waiter did the one thing my dad hates the most - he told us 'we have a lot of large parties tonight (they didn't) so the chef would appreciate if you ordered your appetizers and entrees up front' We reluctantly ordered everything and everything was fine but nothing was spectacular. I probably had the worst thing at the table though - I had the ravioli and the sauce wasn't very flavorful, the pasta was gummy, there was a really high pasta to filling ratio. I was definitely disappointed, especially for how expensive this dinner was. read more

The one time I ate inside the restauran we were seated very close to the kitchen which initially I was concerned about the volumn, however it turned out to be fine. We lucked out and were seated on the patio without a wait, and we enjoyed the energy all around us. Colorful drinks, people clearly having fun, beautiful weather, etc... attentive service as well. We ordered a round of cocktails and some oysters... all delicious and went down easy. We enjoyed our time there so much, but alas, we had to leave for a dinner reservation. I have reduced this to two stars. - rudest waitress in years - greasy, frozen sourced fries and dips - very overpriced for the quality and $14 french fries were horrible. - not what it used to be and that falls on the Chef, who should do a better job on quality instead of serving mundane and sub par appetizers. For the extremely high prices that this restaurant charges, everything should be excellent. I would not recommend this restaurant with the current chef or the wait staff, and I used to be a big fan but was embarrassed when I brought friends here recently. You guys. I have been fortunate enough to eat at several Michelin star restaurants. I think this is my favorite restaurant EVER. I don't say that lightly. We started with some cocktails, had the beet salad and Dungeness crab salad. Both were so light, refreshing, and absolutely delicious! My husband and I shared the risotto and filet and they were both so rich, so delicious, so dreamy. I mean, I was just in a food coma and food ecstasy. I left so freaking satisfied. We have eaten here several times, and the food is quite good. This past weekend we booked an outside table since we have a dog, and were promptly told that they no longer allow dogs even outside, (they did seat us this time) we are talking about street tables not some contained patio. As a dog owner and customer, this is not OK with me. Wine country is very dog friendly and I think this was a huge mistake in policy. Also, nowhere does it say no dogs allowed at an outside table when I was booking the reservation, in fact, these days it's the norm to have dogs dining with us outside. This is a marvelous establishment! We had 7:30pm reservations and we called to see if we could come earlier and they fit us in! Perhaps it was because it was on a Wednesday but we were grateful. We started by getting drinks and the Wagyu Beef Carpaccio. I must say that we cannot recommend the Carpaccio highly enough! It was really delicious and worth every penny! The drinks were okay hence the missing star. I got the Sunflower and my husband got a beer. They were tasty however I would not phone home about either of them. Our entrees came in a perfectly timed manner and we enjoyed them. My husband got the spare rib pasta special and I got the vegetarian risotto. I really enjoyed mine! Both were decadent in taste and did not require seasoning. We were so full that we couldn't eat another bite! Sadly we did not get dessert because of how full we were. Went for my 37th birthday and I really enjoyed my meal. My server was really attentive, dang happy birthday low key( I was alone so I appreciated that) and made sure that my water was filled, food was great and that I was satisfied. Truffle fries--I chose this place because I was craving truffle fries! And they were soooo delicious! Salmon-- The salmon was crispy on the outside and nice and moist on the inside. Cooked very well with a lot of flavor. The sauce with the greens on the bottom was very tasty! They also have an outside area to dine in, a couple of candles on the table and a really nice ambiance. I've visited multiple times and have always enjoyed my meal. My review is from yesterday's Christmas Eve dinner. I had a 6:30 pm reservation and we were seated promptly. The restaurant was pretty packed and that made the service a tad slow but it's understood. Claudia was our waitress and she was great. She recommended the mezcal drink which was different than anything I had before. For my started I got the tuna crudo and it was good. I was expecting it to be spicier so that could've made it better. A maybe a bit more acid to balance our all the flavors. The house made fettuccini carbonara was ok. i enjoyed it but it wasn't anything memorable.
