A surprising number of places I wanted to stop at on my way back to Wisconsin were closed at 8pm on Friday night, but El Famous Burrito was luckily still open and not far off Hwy 41. I ordered a double carne burrito with steak (asada) for the meat and got it with no tomato and rice instead of beans. It wasn't the most flavorful burrito I've ever had, but it was huge and they made it quickly. The restaurant does have a drive-thru, which is convenient. They no longer offer the Ultimate Burrito which is what set them apart from every other competitor. It's still on their website but not offered. Maybe someone should update the website. Food was ok. Buy the double meat. They've gotten very stingy on filling their burritos. Had a steak burrito. There was a LOT of gristle; unchewable/inedible. Definitely not the El Famous of the old days. Walking in they are cash only. Steak burrito was honestly great but the dinner option is not worth it. The Mexican rice was not done all the way, and the beans were normal refried beans. You will be able to get your own agua Fresca and horchata but refills are a dollar. We were not given cilantro, onions or lime with any of our meals. The chips weren't great but the man who was cleaning was incredibly nice. Would definitely recommend tipping the cleaning men because they were nicer than the teenagers in the front. read more

I get my love for burritos and chimichangas from my dad, 100%. So, when we had the opportunity to check out El Famous Burrito for their chimichangas being in the area, I couldn't pass it up! This place offers various burritos, tacos, tostadas, tortas, sopes, tamales, as well as those who want burgers. Proteins include asada, puerco, steak & pork combo, pollo, picadillo, chorizo, and chile relleno. For those who are really wanting to meat up, they have a double-meat option, too. I had the carne asada chimichanga, deep-fried, and only wanted beans and cheese inside; this came with a side of refried beans, rice, and some shredded lettuce and tomatoes. The chimichanga itself was a bit overly fried, so it was a little touch. The inside, while generously filled, was just not good. The beef had an old dish rag/mildew-ish odor and taste to it, which made it inedible to eat. I actually had to spit out my first bit, too. They do give ample amount of hot sauce and salsa, so that's a plus. But, the plus just stops there. Service is a little gruff, and slightly sarcastic, which is a little unnecessary. Tables and seating could be maintained better in terms of being wiped down for customers. No dice, El Famous. I have mixed feelings about this place. I haven't been here in quite some time. It's more of a 3.5 for the food but I rounded it up because of their horchata. The horchata checks off all I look for in horchata. Smooth, creamy sweet and no chalky aftertaste. You can get three different sizes for cups and they charge $1 for refill if you're dining in. To note this place only accepts cash. They have an ATM but if you're not trying to pay service charges on a ATM make sure to bring cash. It's called El Famous Burrito so might as well get a burrito right? It's huge and stuffed with your choice of meat, beans, lettuce, tomato and cheese. Nothing fancy about it but it will fill you up. I was sad to find out they don't serve the spicy carrots and peppers in the side anymore. The steak was a bit chewy in places but overall decent. The rice was bland. I poured salsa into it to give it some kind of flavoring. The chicken taco was pretty decent too. They have a drive through which is convenient. Also the space to sit inside is plenty if you'd rather dine in. Honestly this could just be a go get horchata place for me as there are many other places I'd rather get food from. I would like to start of by saying this is just my taste others might have a different experience. The shrimp tacos were just not good. The fish taco was better but still not the best. Not pictured was a burrito that I tried and that was good. It just doesn't taste like authentic mexican food to me. It's my second time giving this place a try probably won't come back again. Great in every sense of the word, the atmosphere to the food, now there are some meals that can be a hit or miss. For instance, you may not have a good time if you can't handle a gargantuan-sized burrito like my previous experiences. Another thing that can turn patrons away is the eatery's insistence on utilizing its cash-only policy. Still, that alone isn't an issue for me, given the minor inconvenience is easily fixed with the help of an ATM in the buidling. Aside from those two factors, the question asked is, how is the food at El Famous Burrito? This visit around, I had the pleasure of ordering their Torta de Milanesa; the waitress was willing to be accommodating while, at the same time, the service was tremendous but essential to the smooth transaction. The taste and texture of the Mexican Sandwich are, without a shadow of a doubt, phenomenal, with the cross-section having one cheese pull you must experience yourself! I came alongside two relatives, and they had nothing but good things to say about their meals, with one having Lengua Tacos and recommended I try that the next visit, which I may. But what else can I say? At this stop, the restaurant and restroom were clean, and the food was delicious; it is inciting to return here again and give another try to this place. I've been coming here since I was little and I feel like the recipe has never changed. I ordered chicken tacos. They usually come shredded in a tomato sauce. Similar to tinga. Holy Burrito Batman! My husband ordered a steak burrito and it was as large as his head (and his head is ginormous - melon like). For a counter service establishment, the menu is extensive and portions are generous - you can split most items with another adult. Spices are on point and everything is perfectly fresh. Huge portions here. Going for the combo with the rice and beans will just take you over the edge. I ordered the "carne asada" burrito. Maybe it's a regional thing, but what I ordered didn't have carne asada. Sure it's meat, but not the seasoned steak meat I'm used to in Southern California, where they would beat you down with a stick, if you get a burrito wrong. I love el famous burrito, they used to have one in Vernon Hills but it shut down. So the next closest one is either Wheeling or Waukegan.
