Solid, unassuming Mexican place that's all about the fun ambience. As someone else wrote, this restaurant is HOPPING -- we ended up sitting in what's almost of a storefront because of the size of our group (6), although there's a nicer dining area inside as well as a whole bar area. Service could not have been better or nicer. Chips and salsa both excellent; the folks in our group who'd been here before ordered the guacamole even before we sat down. I love how guacamole is slightly different in each restaurant -- this guac is super fresh and really delicious! One friend wasn't super hungry and so got the chicken tortilla soup -- just know their portions are LARGE. So soup truly is a meal in itself! Two of us got salads -- a friend got the taco salad, and I got the chicken tortilla salad. Honestly, I'd probably get the taco salad next time, but not in the tortilla -- the chicken in my salad was deep fried (I know, I'm in a Mexican place, what did I expect?) and so it kind of overpowered everything. An authentic drive-thru Mexican restaurant with an amazing bar this place is a must-visit! I stopped by one night for a burrito and a margarita and was blown away. Since it was December, they had a holiday drink special, and the Grinch margarita was to die for strong, bold, and packed with great flavor. The chips and salsa are some of the best you'll find, and the burrito hit just right. The servers were friendly, attentive, and super helpful. El Gallo Negro was recommend by my barber, Joel. His girlfriend's uncle I believe owns this place. Took the wife here and really enjoyed the cantina styled ambiance. You can sit in an enclosed area that houses the bar or enjoy a more traditional dining setting. Can't go wrong with either. I ordered the quesabirrias which were fire! Wifey ordered the shrimp burrito and had no complaints. Drinks were good, everything was reasonably priced and I'm going to put it on my agenda to return in the near future. read more

We have come here many times, their mole and margaritas keep me coming back. This time I tried new things though!! I had the morenita cocktail and it was yummy. I added a splash of water to cut the sweetness. I had the carnitas plate and it was just right, just bummed that I was charged $1 for some lime, which I feel should have come with the dish. It was a substantial serving and I had carnitas left over. My friend only ate half of her grilled veggie burrito so I put my carnitas in her burrito for lunch the next day. Hubs had the Gallo wrap and he was very happy with it. Moist and flavorful. We sat in the bar and they had the world series on. I didn't care for the teams, but hubs is a Yankee fan so he was stoked. Server was Alicia, she was 10/10, very nice and very helpful! She had to leave for the day after I ordered, and she told me someone would check on it for me. Well 20 minutes went by, and 4-5 cars in drive-thru and no one had come to check with me. I peeped my head around the corner and all the staff were sitting in the back of the restaurant with their phones on the table. Only when they saw me did they approach and check on my order. I've been here a couple times now, most recently with my in-laws for my MIL's birthday. I recommended it, and everyone had a good time and loved their food. Staff was very friendly and professional. Food was fresh ad delicious. Burritos were huge. Everything was big portions and I was impressed with the way the guacamole came to the table looking really beautiful and artistic with veggies poking out like a big flower. It was super cold so we ate indoors, but the first time I was here with my mom, we ate outside on the patio and I highly recommend that if the weather is good and/or you dress for outdoor dining. I then call back and they tell me they can't remake the order the kitchen is closed. I then drive there and walk in and the same lady on the phone is placing an order for takeout. Food is delicious, drinks are beautiful, service is great but drink prices are astronomical and they are getting a little skimpy with the meat. Everything is still tasty but you can definitely tell some corners are being cut. I also think no margarita on the rocks should cost $18. However the salsa and chips are so fresh and light! So when requesting for my husband's soda that he ordered with his meal and had to ask for it at the end and more water or a box to go she got sidetracked with other customers. The dining area was comfortable and we had a big party. The bathrooms were clean. That's important to me especially because we have a 9 year old daughter. No one likes taking their kid into a nasty bathroom. The service was good, and chips and salsa came quickly. This place had an amazing super burrito. We ordered the chicken and steak. It is probably the best burrito I've had in a long time. The flavor is insanely good and the meat was cooked perfectly. Their guacamole was fantastic. I was disappointed that the prices on the website do not match the prices on their restaurant menus. We paid more than expected. I would give this restaurant 4 stars and deduct a star for the menu inconsistency but we forgot a bag with our iPhone in it and they made sure we got it back. For a get together with friends or for happy hour I do recommend this restaurant. Ambiance is nice, crowd not too noisy just average. The sitting area out outside is my favorite to enjoy the evening with good drinks and good company. I have not had their selection of food as I always go for drinks and appetizers, I always get the Nachos with half carnitas and half Pollo Desebrado, I'll let you know when I try something new. For the drinks we got the strawberry margarita, the mango margarita, el Corazón and the Maracuyá margarita all were so tasty and refreshing and with the right amount of tequila meaning if we are not heavy drinkers one is enough. Love this place for Girlfriends little get together. As far as the waiting for out drinks they did take their time bringing the drinks this and all the other times I've come here so if you are on a rush or don't like to wait these is not the place to go. If one is patient ye I do recommend this place but if you are not then this is not the place to go. Drinks really good as well as the nachos and salsas. I want to give a HUGE shot out to Alma and the rest of the crew at El Gallo! We planned my mother in laws surprise 75th birthday and for weeks, Alma was amazing, communicating, accommodating and made the night so special. I showed up early and they helped me decorate, they greeted the family as if they were their own family and made the night so memorable for everyone. I usually only come with coworkers after work for happy hour and seating is always quick, prices are fairly reasonable and service is always great. Since my first time visiting I've stuck to the same order of Chicken Avocado Salad (extra avocado). The chicken is always cooked to perfection and the dressing is so flavorful! I've tried most of the apps as well and they are all solid picks. The cocktails are usually on the stronger side in my opinion but that has never been a complaint for me or anyone on my team. 10/10 for happy hour or after work cocktails. read more

We were served water when we asked after we ordered, but despite multiple requests for a refill during our meal, they never came back with water. If this was just for the Guacamole, then it would be a 5 star review. The fish tacos were decent, the quesadilla with barbacoa good too. The shrimp soup was spicy (hence the requests for water) and was supposed to be served with rice like it says on the menu. When it arrived and we asked about the rice, we were told it wasn't a thing. I really think this place is severely underrated. I am born and raised in San Diego, with extended family from Rosarito. My young adult years were spent eating tacos & drinking margaritas from streetside vendors in TJ. I am a salsa aficionado, and love Jamaica. So, getting the fish taco combo with a "hibiscus" drink was like being home in Northern California. Everything was delicious. The salsa was exactly what I expect from a classic-style Mexican restaurant. The service was great, the place was beautiful, and the music felt like home. I had mixed feelings about how few were there during a regular dinner period because it was great to get seated quickly, but a real bummer to not see more people enjoyed their great food. My kids were fairly happy, and I was very pleased. Too bad they don't have a location down in LA where I now live, since it would make a killing. read more
