This was our first time dining here, and my wife and I came with a friend who has enjoyed this restaurant several times in the past. The service was good overall, but the biggest disappointment was the food. Three of us ordered the Coastal Fish Bowl, a dish our friend had always enjoyed during his previous visits. While the combination of vegetables, black beans, and cheese had pleasant flavors, the fish was the main issue. The menu describes the dish as featuring sea bass, but the fish served was actually swai (also known as basa), a much less expensive farm-raised freshwater fish. I am very familiar with swai and could immediately recognize that it was not the fish described on the menu. Additionally, the menu stated that the fish was grilled, but it was actually lightly battered and deep-fried. The description also mentioned that the dish came with tortillas, but none were provided. Overall, the menu description was significantly misleading and did not accurately represent what was served. While our experience was not ruined by the service, it was only adequate and did not make up for the disappointment with the food. A restaurant's menu should accurately reflect the ingredients and preparation methods so guests can have the experience they are expecting. read more

We actually were kind of blown away by how awesome she was. She was so friendly and accommodating with our silly little questions and special requests. She said it was no problem to make it less sweet and it turned out delicious. We sat out on the patio, which was surprisingly lovely given the strip mall location. In the past, Agave has been consistent and prepared only with fresh ingredients. The other evening I decided to treat myself to a Door Dash delivery of a taco salad. First, the dasher didn't read the specific instructions for finding my house. He ended up leaving my order by the garage door.... I love taco salad, and that's what I ordered, al pastor. My friends and I came here because I woke a dinner and tequila pairing as an auction item. Diego, the manager, made this dinner very special and our waitress was swet,attentive, and very helpful. It's a nice venue with plenty of seating both inside and out. We started with the chips and salsa, then guacamole. The red was definitely spicier than the green and the guacamole was very fresh. The chips were thicker than I prefer though good. 2nd course was the house salad, again very fresh with lots of flavor and not over dressed. They brought out a plate of seasoned crickets and spiced peanuts to pair with the tequila. Don't knock it until you try it. The crickets have a salty/citrus taste and the with peanuts are seriously addicting. Next was an oyster on the half shell which was sweet and flavorful. The main was a traditional chicken mole that was the Grandmother's recipe served with rice and beans. I was impressed with the flavors and beautifully cooked chicken. First, the service was outstanding, and everyone represented the restaurant well. I ordered a chilli relleno, and my wife split a chicken chimichanga with other members of our party. The order came out quickly, and the presentation was great. The chimichanga was very good, but my chili relleno was okay. The pepper was too firm, and it lacked any real flavor. The beans and rice were lukewarm but had good flavor. The prices were reasonable, and the overall experience was good. I would eat there again, but I would not make a special trip to go there again. You have to like molle sauce, and I do, otherwise you will not like the chili relleno. They let you know when you order, and it has a good flavor. The people who work there are five-star! read more

Right to the point Service was great. Now, the salsa tasted like spiced tomato sauce. There wasn't an onion or pepper to be found. It was awful. We ordered a side of guacamole. Same as the salsa, overly blended avocados, that's it. My wife ordered a steak fajita salad. She liked it but it had far too many uncooked bell peppers. I love a good Mole. Haven't had one in years and years. But this Mole Negro looked good. A chicken leg quarter covered in Mole. The sauce was delicious but there wasn't any meat on the chicken. It was all bone. I am not exaggerating but I got maybe 5 bites of chicken off the whole thing. The bones that were left were no smaller than when it came to me in the first place. The food, the service, the ambiance... everything was wonderful. I have struggled to find a dine in Mexican restaurant that I enjoyed this much. I appreciated that they kept it spicy ! I wish I took a photo of my drink. I believe it was the Don Juan. It was superb. Our waiter spoke so highly of their special at the time, chicken empanadas, even going out of her way to show us photos of it on her phone. They did not disappoint! Great atmosphere, warm service, with fresh ingredients in the food and drinks is a winning combo every time, and I can't wait to go back again when we're nearby. Calling themselves "The Best Oaxacan Cuisine in Sonoma County", they certainly set themselves apart from the many other typical Mexican restaurants and taco trucks. Located in a strip mall near Safeway with a view of the parking lot about 3 blocks west of the Plaza, they have a cute outdoor patio with umbrellas and plants and indoors features a new redwood bar. We choose to sit outside since it was cooler than inside on a summer night (only fans inside). Service was fast and friendly. The complimentary homemade chips with red and green salsa were a nice touch. We got the house margarita which had a rim of flavored spices and packed a kick. I ordered the Enmoladas, the closest to a chicken enchilada. It came with two tortillas filled with braised chicken topped with Mole de Oaxaca (sweet mole sauce), queso fresco, black beans, rice ($19). It was really great, tender and mouth watering, similar to other Oaxacan I've had in SoCal. Husband had the Camarones a la Diabla, which were large prawns in housemade diabla sauce, onions, bell peppers, rice, black beans, and tortillas ($21). He said they were pretty good but wasn't wowed by them. We were hurrying to a show at Coyote Sonoma across the street so didn't have time to hang out, but the restaurant was packed and many people were lingering and having a great time. Everything here was amazing! Two years in a row we have ventured to Healdsburg for an Autumn excursion. My brother and his wife from Orange County and me, from Dallas. This restaurant is in a Safeway shopping center and is unassuming. We stopped in last year after a long drive from OC and decided to take a chance. Well it turned out to be our favorite restaurant in the valley! The people working here must be well taken care of by the owners, as they're all so friendly and nice. This year we had Stephanie for our server and bartender as well. She is an absolute treasure! You would think that she owned the place, the way she raved about the food and cocktails. We took her suggestions on ordering and loved each and every thing we ordered! She even gave us a lot of information about Mezcal, as none of us were familiar with it. They have several margaritas with Mezcal rather than tequila. We tried one and it was very very good! We loved Stephanie SO much that we told her we would come back another night before we left, just to see her and get our "fix" of Agave's food before leaving for home. Their Mole sauce is amazing and they sell it in jars in the restaurant. I regret not getting a few, and next time I will definitely bring some home. Nothing negative to say whatsoever about Agave. Authentic Oazacan cuisine in an outdoor shopping plaza experience, Agave puts affordable dining in the heart of wine country in the Dry Creek Valley on notice! Located in the Vineyard Shopping Center in Healdsburg, California, which itself is a posh town located in the heart of Sonoma County's wine country, Agave has been a fixture of Healdsburg's dining scene for over fourteen years, thanks to the entrepreneurship of owner and chef Octavio Diaz. Diaz, along with his brother Pedro also owns the Casa de Mole taqueria, has really brought the mole to the masses so we can say, so much so they actually sell it by the sixteen ounce jar to customers. What brought a friend and I here was the fact that after an afternoon of wine tasting we were looking for a nice food respite in wine country that wasn't going to break the bank. After looking for Mexican Food under my trusty app, what would be the first thing to pop-up but Agave. After taking a glance at their menu, we saw that prices were affordable and their entrées were varied enough for an enjoyable meal. Being able to dine in their front patio was another plus, as the day was warm but not too overbearing. The menu at Agave is separated into categories including Botanas or Appetizers, Del Mar or Seafood entrées, Platos Features Tradicionals or strong traditional plates, Bowl or Burrito, Ensaladas, Sides and Drinks, which included an extensive cocktail menu. We began with their cocktails, and I ordered the Vintner's Favorite which featured watermelon, strawberry thyme syrup, chile ancho liquor, citrus, and 400 conejos mezcal. My friend ordered their Vamos which consisted of cantaloupe puree, habanero shrub, fresh grapefruit juice, orange bitters, citrus, and 400 conejos mezcal. To start our meal they offered multiple rounds of complimentary tortilla chips, served with a multitude of dipping sauces, including verde, rojo, and an orange dipping sauce that was super spicy on the tongue. We opted to add their Guacamole to our order as it was made with fresh avocado, onion, cilantro, and fresh lime and radishes. And for our entrée neither of us were very hungry so we opted to split their Diego's Burrito which featured their famous pastor, BBQ pork which is prepared in house on a daily basis, grilled onions and peppers, mushrooms, potatoes, sour cream, avocado, and melted Monterey jack cheese. It wouldn't take too long for our Guacamole to be brought out first, which was so rich with flavor that when paired with their tortilla chips was a meal unto itself. And then our Diego's Burrito was served, split into two plates, and presented with such artisanal flair that even the green onion garnish that was served as garnish was grilled. I made sure to put both the rojo and verde sauces on top of my burrito so that when dined elegantly with a knife and fork, I could not be stopped. Ironically, our cocktails came out as the final portion of our meal, and the smokey taste of mezcal came through with every sip. Our total bill came to $57.76 which was reasonable considering how much food and cocktails we were able to enjoy on this one visit. We both had enough food to take home, so they were nice enough to give us an extra serving of tortilla chips and dipping sauces with our takeout boxes, which in this day and age is going above and beyond our expectations of what we are to leave home with. A return visit is a must to Agave, with plenty of parking, great service provided by our server Hector, and most importantly delicious authentic Oaxacan cuisine that many in wine country cannot find, it's a win-win or ganar-ganar situation for all involved! read more
