Came for lunch, had 4 tacos and a tostada total :$16.00 For the price I could have had a lot better - flavor wise not that good , their tacos are over priced & they are stingy with the meat , their salsa is bland at best ., shrimp tostada was 80% lettuce 10% avocado 10% shrimp . You only get one chance to make a good first impression and this taqueria sure nailed it. I came here with my one friend who suggested it after I said I'm down to get burritos. I was a lil skeptical at first because it may not look like much when you first see it but I promise you this taqueria is amazing. I ordered a burrito with lengua and a side of refried beans. I also ordered a horchata. The lady gave me a generous sample of the horchata before to try, how nice of her. Also came with a nice amount of tortilla chips and saunces. This was my go-to place back in high school and I still make the trip every time I'm in town. Not my favorite place to get Mexican food in San Jose, but it has the best chicken nachos ever! I don't know what they put in it, but it is so addicting. It's definitely the only place I get chicken over beef although their carne asada nachos are really good, as well. They have really fast service and are really friendly. However, they don't have a salsa bar and are a bit frugal about their hot sauce when you order togo. read more

Was really disappointed with the burrito. Not a good value for the money.

First of all, the picture provided on this profile isn't the correct one for the El Grullense located on Julian. The El Grullense located on Julian isn't a drive-thru, but it doesn't matter because the small inconvenience of having to walk into the restaurant is worth it. It's also much better than the El Grullense drive-thru seen in the picture. From what I understand, they aren't affiliated, and you can tell by the difference in the quality and the taste of the food. Overall, all of the food is great and affordably priced. I used to live in the condos located right behind the shopping center El Grullense is situated in, and let me tell you, El Grullense became like a close family friend during those days of the dreaded hangover. Their soup was delicious and helped nurse me back to health on more than one occasion. Although all of the food is delicious, my favorite dish is their super chicken burrito. So far, in my search for the ultimate burrito, this burrito ranks first on my list. I have traveled well over twenty minutes to get their burrito, passing other taquerias and Mexican restaurants along the way. The belly wants what the belly wants. Their super chicken burrito is just that--super! It's super delicious and super big! The chicken is boiled in this delicious red sauce with just a hint of bay leaf. It makes the burrito so much juicier--much better than grilled chicken, which usually leaves burritos dry and bland. It's also loaded with Spanish rice, beans, lettuce, guacamole and sour cream. I guess, overall, it's just a burrito, but their technique is unique, and therefore, it leaves you craving more. You would think that San Jose would be the burrito capital of the bay area, but they really are hard to find. By the way, if you decide to dine in, the service is pretty good, and the food is made and served quickly. Oh, and one more thing, I'm ranking the burrito five stars. i've been meaning to create a list called san joséana, which will feature all the traditional places that (like almost) define san josé culture, places that r (kind of) "must hit" spots, places where you feel like you hang out at _because_ you _grew_up_ in san josé, et cetera. for example, falafel's drive in totally makes this list. also, obviously la vic's makes this list. what else? uhm, well, i _personally_ would put yiasoo on this list n'... i think i would put like lee's sn'wiches on the list. hrm... i think i would put myuhngdong soondubujip on the list because we've _got_ to rep santa clara koreatown (k.town). what else? oh, obviously, pizza my heart would be on the list. _that_'s _such_ a piece of san joséana. i know many of these campbell/bascom places would probably make the list since local print publications tend to focus so much on the campbell/pruneyard/bascom ra n' santana row because they tend not to understn' the more ethnic ras of the silicon valley like little saigon, the taiwanese side of cupertino/saratoga, n' koreatown; you know? well, if i ever get around to making this list (which is probably but not definite since i have a copy of the book _getting_things_done_, with a bookmark that has remained on page 19 for the past 6 months), i'll be sure to add some colour to it n' not let it be as whitewashed as those "best of" lists that the local print publications put out. however, i know i'll have some explaining to do. anyway, yah... after my first visit to el grullense, i get a feeling that it should be on the list of artifacts of san joséana. i know la vic's is a big aprés clubbing venue n' is so popular with the sjsu kids. i did my master of science in mechanical engineering at san josé state, so i know about la vic's, yah. i'm sure _some_ may argue that there's only room for _one_ late night mexican joint for the aprés clubbing crowd, but... well, i personally am frustrated that we don't have a kogi korean taco truck up here in the silicon valley (as they do in l.a.), so in an act of angst, i'm going to insist on placing a second late night mexican joint on the san joséana list. i like el grullense. i think i first heard about it from my sister who lives in willow glen. i passed by it many times but never went there until this past friday after the yelp elite event at the who's _tommy_ musical, which played at city lights theatre in downtown san jo, in the south of san carlos neighbourhood. oh, do they call that ra sofa? south first? is that what you call that neighbourhood? i'm not sure. anyway, at a little after 10 o.clock pm, my wife n' i couldn't find parking around any la vic's, so i started driving away from downtown n' remembered that el grullense was nearby. cool! well, we showed up to find it not too crowded. a few cars were in line a the drive.thru; but we wanted to eat there anyway. we walked up to the walk.up window; no line. we happy with the selection: burritos, tacos, nachos, quesadillas, tortas, sopes, enchiladas... they all sounded great! to be honest, the prices were not supercheap or anything. i mean, they were okay, but... i guess their popularity probably drove the prices up because they weren't like "hole.in.wall" prices. well, my wife wanted a carnitas quesadilla, so she got that. i wanted a carne asada sope n' a lengua super taco. oh yah, they had run out of some meats at that time... like, i think they were out of uh... al pastor n'... some kind of pollo... maybe pollo asado. anyway, we got those things. i made a point of ordering the _super_ taco because when i visited the highly praised nick's crispy tacos in sf, i was so disappointed with my food but later heard that i was _supposed_ to have ordered my tacos "nick's way." however, it was just that i didn't have enough cash on me that day. i really don't it when places r "cash only." oh, which reminds me that tk noodles surely makes the san joséana list! well, the super taco was pretty big... big n' messy! how do you fit all that on a couple of corn tortillas, you know? well, delicious nonetheless. sitting under those sodium streetlamps rendered us virtually colourblind, so we couldn't tell exactly what we were eating or whether the salsa we were using was red or green; but we knew we had two cups of each of those n' four lime slices, two in each of two dimesack bags. that's what you call those little zip.lock baggies that druggies carry, right? sorry, i'm just not 3@*(%!#& "hardcore" enough to know that $#!+. i grew up in almaden n' graduated from leland. i'm not going to be a yanksta wanksta wannabe n' pretend i _do_ know to have "5 on" anything. i don't. i just know that cute, little lime slices at el grullense come in little, plastic, zip.lock baggies. 1tym, a friend of mine hired a taco truck to come n' cook fresh "street" tacos at her house for her husbn''s birthday. the lengua in _those_ tacos was very chewy. here it's more moist and tender. read more

For vegetarians: They make a delicious Burrito Vegetariano and Tostada Vegetariana. Always very fresh ingredients. Not spicy, but they give you a choice of salsas (green or red) to add more flavor and/or heat. Spanish and English spoken here. read more

I used to love this place but after eating there today I've lost all confidence in their food. Everything we got was cold and very bland. The carne asada had absolutely no flavor what so ever. I called to place a simple order which was two plain tacos for my son and an order of shrimp. Upon calling the girl who answered asked me what would I like to order, the moment I started ordering she said oh let me place you on hold. I heard on the background as she was taking other orders and then another lady got back to me. I repeated myself and she repeated back my order. I get there and paid. When I arrived home my son's tacos were missing and I called back. The first girl who picked up said I only charged you for the shrimp . So I asked do you see the tacos written down? She said yes and she never apologized or said It was an error from their end . I mean she saw it written down but didn't charge me! I told her my mom was headed there to pick up her order and if she could add it to hers. Well it turns out they prepared the tacos and not plain as I asked for the third time. Bron and raised in San Jose so I know about Mexican food! El Grullense is the best taqueria in town. Fair prices and great variety. The employees always smile instead of rushing you and snatching your money like some OTHER (Chipotle) places I know! Plus- its real Mexican food- not Americanized.
