I've eaten at countless restaurants over the years, and I can honestly say this was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. We waited 1.5 hours to be seated while half the restaurant sat empty. After we were seated, it took about 30 minutes for anyone to ask if we wanted drinks, another 30 minutes before our order was taken, and then an hour for the food to arrive. Throughout the wait, several servers were gathered in the corner talking and laughing while tables--including ours--were left unattended. Unfortunately, the food didn't make up for the service. The meat was dry, lacked flavor, and the shrimp was so chewy that I couldn't finish it. It was honestly one of the worst shrimp dishes I've ever been served. I've seen countless influencers giving this place glowing reviews, and after eating here, I simply don't believe them. My experience was the complete opposite. Went to go check out Tulum Mexican Kitchen located in San Jose Vietnam Town. Our waiter Sandra was very nice and attentive. We enjoyed the food especially the Chicken tinga and everything is very instagram worthy . Unlike many other trendy Mexican restaurants, the big difference we noticed is they don't have ear-busting music They had traditional Mariachi and trio music playing at a comfortable volume which was nice. The reviews are very mixed on Yelp with a 3.8 average rating. However I did notice some of the low reviews mentioned that they didn't think a Mexican restaurant should be in Vietnam Town so I would discount those sentiments. First of all, the restaurant is beautiful inside. Definitely has a nice ambiance and appeared to have a second floor I did not get to see. We ordered the Camarones En Chipotle, Green Chicken Enchiladas, The Dinner Molcajete, and Carne Asada Fries. They even made a breakfast dish for my niece. Everything tasted fresh and was delicious. Our reservation to another place didn't work out for us so I called Tulum the afternoon before our holiday outing and the woman on the phone picked up promptly and noted they could accommodate a 12 person group at opening. This made it so seamless to reserve here. Our group got there at opening and our table was ready and most of the group was already seated when we got there. Drink orders were flowing as the waitress caught up to me and I got a cafe de olla. We browsed the menu and the more I looked the harder it was to pick one thing. I ended up choosing chilaquiles with a bandera sauce and carne asada as the added protein. The rest of the table got all different types of dishes from carne en su jugo to birria to omelettes. While we enjoyed each other's company sipping on our cafecito I enjoyed the ambiance of the space. Nicely decorated for the holidays. Since it was opening time it wasn't as loud as I imagine it can get in there. The sun did shine on the faces of those facing the windows which was not enjoyable for them. There was no way to cover the sun either since it was coming in from the top windows with no shade. My food came out along with the rest of the plates and we went right in to enjoy them. My favorite chilaquiles was covered in the white sauce. The red and green were good but the white sauce was my favorite. The carne was cooked well but I could taste it wasn't marinated or lacked flavor. I didn't get a knife to cut the meat so it was very difficult to enjoy a piece with my chilaquiles. It was hard to cut with a butter knife. I thought it would be a piece of steak but it was a piece of carne asada. Eggs were scrambled and cooked well. The whole plate was filling, had flavor, and was a good portion. The cafe de olla had a good flavor but a tad sweet for my preference. The space in here is a vibe. A fun place to enjoy large gatherings. I came for breakfast but will update when I come back to visit for dinner. Bathrooms are clean. Staff was welcoming and efficient in taking care of our group. Hospitality was a 10/10. Parking in the am was a breeze but at prime time I can see it being a complete nightmare so plan accordingly. Was skeptical of the 3.8 rating at this restaurant but was pleasantly surprised to find the environment authentic and welcoming. It is in a crowded shopping complex, but definitely worth the wait. Since they didn't do anything to change the interior of this place from the previous business this restaurant looks really nice. Been meaning to try this spot out for a while. The owners of this restaurant is very bold to open a Mexican spot in a more Asian dominant location. The service here is just ok. After I finish my beer it took them a while to ask me for another drink. And it was like only another table dining in. I end up ordering the molcajete dish that came with a variety of meats and also comes with a side of beans, rice and tortillas. The flavor was nothing special but the chicken and beef was extremely dry. You can tell the meat was already cooked and was just reheated. We tried a new spot for dinner in Vietnam Town called Tulum, a Mexican restaurant with such a wonderful vibe the moment you walk in. From the outside it looks huge, but inside the space is beautifully designed with two levels of seating, eye catching decor, and a warm, welcoming atmosphere. We started with the mango ceviche, which I really enjoyed. If you prefer something less sweet, I would recommend going with the regular ceviche instead. For our main dish, we ordered the molcajete and it was absolutely amazing. It came packed with seafood, chicken, and steak all simmering together in a heated stone bowl with melted mozzarella inside. The red sauce was rich and flavorful, and since the stone kept the dish hot the entire meal, every bite was just as good as the first. The tortillas on the side made it fun to eat like tacos and the flavors were out of this world. The only thing to keep in mind is that the food does take a little longer to come out, so be prepared for a wait if you are really hungry. That said, it was worth every minute, and while we were waiting we kept noticing other guests getting equally unique and sizzling dishes served in stone bowls. Tulum is such a fun addition to San Jose dining and I cannot wait to go back and try more of their menu. read more

Came in early and they weren't really busy. Was told they would get my table ready as they had many available upstairs. The hostess left and came back several times. Not sure what the delay was, or if she just forgot about me. But after about 10 minutes another worker asked if I had been helped and I told her the hostess said she was getting the tanke ready for me already but I wasn't sure what happened. She went to go check the status and came back immediately and told me the table was ready for me. Maybe the hostess got busy? But seemed like she did forget about me. After getting seated upstairs it took another 6-7 minutes for someone to come up to my table and ask if I wanted anything to drink in spanish. I had asked if she spoke English and she did. She took my order for the michelada and left. Two other parties got seated after me (including a party of four with two adults and two children , and another party that had four adults). I waited and waited and the table that arrived AFTER I placed my drink order with the children actually got their drinks before mine (which included one michelada as well) and their appetizer. My waitress still hadn't come back to get my food order. Eventually I got my drink and within another 2-3 minutes the waitress came up to take my order. I had to ask her again if she could speak English to me (I know i know, it's a Mexican restaurant but unfortunately I dont know how to speak spanish). Over all the service was slow, the waitress smiled and seemed nice but she kept speaking Spanish to me after multiple requests to speak English. I waited a long time while the two other tables seated after me got better and quicker service. I was pretty disappointed with the service overall and dont plan on going back. Our server was Juliana and she was very kind and help us out with the menu. She was very polite the whole time and patient, we love people like her. Truly one of the best versions I've ever had. I also ordered the café de olla, and it was the perfect cozy complement- warm, spiced just right, and so comforting. My friend had the green chilaquiles with steak and couldn't stop raving. The flavors were bold and vibrant, the steak was tender and perfectly cooked, and the whole dish was incredibly satisfying. She paired it with the horchata, which she said was the most authentic horchata she's ever had- creamy, just the right amount of sweetness, and beautifully spiced. All the reels on IG look good, but it wasn't worth the hype. The atmosphere was cool, music isn't so loud you have to yell to have a conversation. Tables clean, but they do clean the seating with the same towel they use on the tables. I always bring wipes. We were seated right away, service was ok. They took our drink order, about 10 min later they took our food order. We ordered the Chilaquiles (bandera style), there was one layer of chips on half the plate (probably 12 chips) $18 seemed too pricey for the amount given. And we got El Trio $19, each item was about 3-4 oz, 1) Menudo has good flavor, no hominy or meat, only tripe & too much of it. It was a bit oily too. 2) Barbacoa good flavor too, but too much fatty pieces in it. I had half meat & half fat, not so appetizing. 3) Pozole, good flavor too, mine had more hominy than pork, that was a bummer. But loved the fresh tortillas, those were delish. read more
