Luna is my favorite for Mexican cuisine in the Bay Area. Absolutely the top chile rellenos; what I love the best is the egg souffle cloud they rest in. They vary a little from time to time (some poblanos spicier than others, and sometimes the souffle cloud is crispier). But always wonderful. Yummy guacamole and salads. Flavorful, not over-sweet horchata. Just right atmosphere. And really wonderful service. James was our server at our most recent visit; he's got the competition (even compared to significantly pricier upscale restaurants) completely beat. Very attentive, especially to our two new-to-Luna companions. Very personable. Kept a constant, warm, presence with us. Good suggestions. This place is mid. We had the ceviche de camarón, watermelon agua fresca and the parrillada. They start you out with two salsas and chips. The salsas were okay, not too flavorful or memorable. The chips were oily and crushed with a ton of tiny pieces, hard to use for scooping ceviche. The chicken, sausage and carnitas on the parrillada were good, it just overall needed better seasoning or at least salt. The watermelon agua fresca was excellent. The service started out great but as the meal progressed we saw our server less and less. I love a hands off wait staff but by the end we had been waiting for a while past the time we were done. Also our waiter did not offer any dessert, but he offered it to the table next to us. So that's confusing but anyway, this place missed the mark for me. You know when you walk into a place, and you see an old lady making tortillas by hand, and putting them on a griddle, and making them fresh, it's going to be a great meal. I get a pit in my stomach just thinking about those fresh tortillas. I was here with some co-workers at the recommendation of a Sacramentoan who was familiar, and he won the prize for picking the best place of the trip. The plan was to get some appetizers then order a meal... but the appetizers were so good, that we just got more of those. The bacon wrapped shrimp were so good. Bacon and shrimp go together like bacon and eggs, bacon and turkey, bacon and LT, bacon and scallops, bacon and bacon, bacon and cottage cheese (try it before you judge), bacon and bloody Mary's, and bacon and chocolate. Where was I, oh yea, that appetizer... the shrimps stood up on their own but the red tomatoey sauce it came with was amazing! We also filled up on the chips and poblano sauce and the hearty quesadilla. And the classic margarita was fresh and simple and just right... the baby bear in my adult version of Goldilocks. The first time my husband and I dined here, the weather was quite hot, so we sat inside and had a nice experience. Our server was very friendly. He brought out plenty of chips and salsa, with eventually a refill (or two). The chips were so delicious, and their two sauces were addicting. The green sauce can be quite spicy depending on the batch of chiles they use. I started with a Paloma, which was served in a terracotta mug. It was slightly sweet and tangy, just the way I like my cocktails. For our main, we shared the Mixed Grill (chico) for two. The combination of meats and vegetables was tender but not seasoned. We used their wonderful sauces as the condiment for the dish. Their house-made corn tortillas were soft and held their shape when folded. My most recent visit was with a group of four girlfriends for a weekday lunch. We arrived at 11:00 a.m. and had just about every seat available to us. We decided to sit in the semi-enclosed patio, which was lovely since the weather was mildly warm. The only downside to this area was the curious flies. The overhead fans weren't enough to keep them at bay. Two of the ladies ordered the Chile Verde. It had big chunks of tender pork, but this time it was a little too tangy and lacked any spiciness. As I entered the restaurant there was the aroma of fresh tortillas being made. Upon sitting down I was presented with fresh homemade corn tortilla chips along with two salsas (mild and medium) Tortilla chips were thick with just the right amount of crunch. Tasting the green (mild?) salsa was my favorite. It had a great tomatillo flavor with a creamy spiciness. It was a good reprieve from my main dish. A Paloma was my drink of choice this time. I'll preface this by saying I'm not a fan of tequila but when presented with the cold clay mug rimmed with salt and topped with orange and grapefruit, I was impressed. It was delicious, so refreshing, fragrant, and cold! A nice counterbalance to my meal. Chilaquiles was a dish I wanted to try. They had delicious chips again cooked in salsa verde. Covered with eggs (any style) fresh crema, avocado, and onions the chilaquiles exceeded my expectations. So simple yet so flavorful. Mixing up quantities of ingredients in each bite made for a delicious experience. My favorite element being the sharpness of the onions which cut the richness of the dish. I'm generally not a fan of refried beans but these ones had such a unique and satisfying flavor which complimented the dish well. Loved the warm and inviting space with its charming banquettes, wrought iron chairs, and rustic wood tables, and couldn't have asked for more accommodating service as staff graciously allowed me to order from the lunch menu even though it was still breakfast time. The gluten-free Steak Salad (a quarter pound of all-natural hormone-free grilled skirt steak, organic mixed greens, roasted corn, avocado, cherry tomatoes, Point Reyes blue cheese, balsamic vinaigrette) hit my macros beautifully and was a joy to both my eyes and my stomach, while the complimentary housemade tortilla chips and salsa utterly destroyed said macros but were totally worth the sacrifice. :D read more

We drove to San Jose to try Luna Mexican Kitchen, and it was well worth the drive. The restaurant has plenty of tables available inside, outside, and under the covered patio. The food is authentic, healthy, and delicious. We started with the Fruta con Chile, which was perfectly soaked in chile and lemon. My skirt steak was great, and my wife loved her chicken bowl. This restaurant is my absolute favorite place to go whether families in town I'm going on a date or my girlfriend and I just wanna catch up The food is beyond delicious, very traditional, flavorful and very filling. Their camote appetizer is huge and is more than enough for four people to share and it's beyond delicious. I finally made it to LUNA on the Alameda for lunch today. I've been to the Pruneyard location several times, but have wanted to try this one for a while. It was busy at noon on a Saturday, but fortunately they have a large tented outdoor dining area, in addition to the regular indoor restaurant, to accommodate everyone. I was almost immediately seated and given water and chips and two types of salsa. Both were too spicy for me, but the chips tasted good. I ordered the steak salad, which is what I've had every time I've dined at the Pruneyard location. It was very good, although the steak portion was teeny tiny. That was disappointing. But the greens were fresh and delicious and I loved the fresh avocado and roasted corn on top. Even the salad dressing was perfection. A few random notes: My waiter was running around like crazy trying to help all of the diners at his tables, but still came by and checked on me a couple times. The restaurant is LOUD despite being outside. They allow dogs on leashes outside. The dedicated parking lot is small, but I was able to find a spot. If you are looking for date nights, or for casual dinners, this place works in both cases. We were served chips and salsa to begin with, the chips were slightly too oily for my preference but otherwise great. We started with the horchata, which was probably not the best horchata, but still not too terrible either. We ordered the Enchiladas Suizas and Mole poblano con pollo. The enchiladas were delicious, and the quantity did not disappoint either when I compare to some other mexican places in the similar price point. The chicken in the Mole poblano was a little dry, but shoutout to our server Ray, who replaced it for us. We then went with the Lamb Barbacoa which was terrific, it was juicy, tender and buttery. The server was very nice and patient with all the questions we had on the menu. Would definitely visit the place again. Note: Seems like there is a long wait time during the weekends, so I would advice on getting on the wait list early. As someone that likes being toasty more than cold, I was more than happy in the space. They had a number of options I wanted to try, and I'll definitely be back to make sure I try them. We came during the morning, expanding the choices to breakfast options. I got the steak and eggs option, and enjoyed everything on my plate. The meat was cooked to the temp I requested, as well as the eggs being cooked to preference. The meat was good, and wasn't tough at all. The beans were good. The nopal was also good; personally, I enjoy it when the nopal isn't too bitter/sour, so this was good for me. Texture was good as well. Really can't say anything bad about the main. We also got the tacos dorados to share, and they were good. They're also an eye catcher, as people looked over to see what it was. Hot chocolate was good, but do be careful as it is hot. From the dinner menu, the only vegan choices are the guacamole, most of the sides, and the Enchiladas El Vegan. The enchiladas are very sauce-heavy, which I personally love and appreciate. The filling inside is really well seasoned; I just wish they were filled a bit more, especially toward the middle. The amount was fine, but a little extra would have made them even better. I got arroz verde and black beans on the side. On their own, they were just okay. The beans tasted a bit plain and the arroz verde was slightly dry. However, once I mixed them together and added the green sauce from the enchiladas, they were honestly 10x better. The side portions were also very generous, which I appreciated. My order was ready right on time for pickup, which is always a plus. Hidden gems, soulful food, and one of the best vegetarian dishes I've ever eaten. I've been to Luna Mexican Kitchen before and always had a great time but honestly I didn't realize how to order here. This place has SERIOUS hidden gems that will absolutely blow your mind compared to most Mexican restaurants and I'm here to tell you exactly what they are. First the atmosphere. Luna is one of the cutest little spots. The small building with murals outside instantly sets the tone and the outdoor seating is perfect for a lazy weekend lunch. Inside is cozy and warm and you can actually watch fresh corn tortillas being made right there which already tells you you're in good hands. The service deserves a shoutout too. The servers know the menu really well, many speak Spanish, feel like locals guiding you toward the best dishes, and are genuinely warm and friendly. You can tell they actually care about the food. Now let's talk about the star dishes. Café de Olla Do not skip this. This is a traditional Mexican coffee brewed in a clay pot with piloncillo which is unrefined cane sugar, Mexican cinnamon, and a hint of citrus. The result is an earthy, smoky, gently sweet coffee that is incredibly comforting. The aroma alone of cinnamon, warm sugar, and subtle citrus makes the experience special. Just holding the cup and slowly sipping it instantly makes your day better. I've had cocktails here before which are great, but this coffee is something truly special, especially for brunch. It is slightly hidden on the menu and I had never noticed it before which was a big mistake on my part. Fruta con Chile This sounds simple but it is done perfectly. Super crisp Jícama, cucumber, pineapple, raw mango, orange, lime, house made chamoy, and Tajín. Refreshing, bright, and balanced. It is the perfect way to start your meal. Simple street food executed beautifully. Vegetarian Chile Relleno (Calabacitas) This might honestly be one of the best vegetarian dishes I have eaten in my life. When you think chile relleno you usually imagine something deep fried, heavy, and stuffed with cheese. This version is completely different and incredible. A fire roasted poblano pepper stuffed with chayote squash, seasonal squash known as calabacitas, fire roasted corn, and just enough melted cheese to add depth without overpowering the vegetables. It is served over a warm and comforting salsa ranchera alongside black beans cooked with epazote and fluffy quinoa. The flavors were explosive yet balanced. Smoky, earthy, comforting, and fresh all at once. I did not leave a single bite on the plate. I usually order meat forward dishes at Mexican restaurants but I would order this again and again without hesitation. This dish truly respects vegetables and what they can become when treated thoughtfully. If you step back for a moment this dish is also incredibly nutritious with complex carbs, beans, and multiple vegetables working together in a way that feels both satisfying and light. It is rare to find food that is this healthy and this delicious at the same time. They do have a meat version of the chile relleno as well but the vegetarian version is something special. Tamales Soft, moist, and flavorful with great texture. You do not see many places doing tamales properly anymore and these were very well executed. The toppings and salsas paired beautifully. Chicken Protein Bowl A solid and flavorful bowl with avocado, black beans, chicken, and rice. Balanced, comforting, and well seasoned. Aguas Frescas We tried the Jamaica which is hibiscus and it was refreshing, vibrant, and delicious. Love that it's full of antioxidants! Churros Save room for these. These are some of the best churros I have had in the South Bay. Not the typical heavy extruded kind but more like a blend between Mexican and Spanish style churros. Light, crisp, coated in cinnamon sugar, served with whipped cream, warm melted chocolate, and a charred slice of orange that you can squeeze on top. I left feeling genuinely happy and light after eating an incredibly flavorful and thoughtfully balanced meal which is rare. My biggest tip is not to order the standard fare. Look for the hidden gems on the menu. Also order the freshly made corn tortillas. They are soft, warm, and absolutely worth it. I got the chicken enchiladas, smothered, and green sauce. Great flavor throughout the whole entire dish. The weight was not too bad, but might be a little bit difficult to find parking especially on a weekend when they are significantly busy. Good food, especially the jalapeño salsa served with the nacho, it really grows on you. I even set aside my lime dressing because the salsa was that good! The cauliflower florets pair better with the salsa than with the lime dressing, too. Overall, both the food and the service were great. There's plenty of seating, including a heated outdoor area, which is a nice touch. I'll definitely be coming back to try more items from their menu. read more

I have loved Luna Mexican kitchen in Campbell for quite some time, but was finally able to try the Alameda location. We ordered from the breakfast menu, which they conveniently serve until 3pm, and WOW! I can't wait to go back and try out more dishes. The indoor section of the location is much smaller than Campbell's, but they have a large outdoor (tented) seating too.They had very strong heaters in the tent section so we were toasty warm. The service was great, with a very nice and attentive server. We ordered the horchata French toast and it was delicious! The texture was perfect-- the kind you only get when it's made in-house. The sweetness level was just right (not too sweet). The horchata taste was somewhat muted, which might come down to preference, but I loved it! A good house-made whipped cream topping is truly the key to my heart and this one was exceptional. It was silky, fluffy, and perfectly balanced the rest of the dish. Only complaint is I would have liked a little more berries. Overall great experience. I can't wait to come back to Luna to try the rest of their breakfast menu! read more

We'd heard a lot about this Luna and how it's even better than the Campbell location, so we were excited to try it. We came in on a Sunday Funday after being at Hop & Vine, where the service was honestly amazing--so maybe that made the difference feel even bigger. We just came for drinks and apps, but the service here was really off. Our server Sergio V seemed like he was having a bad day--everything felt short and kind of attitude-y, which just made the whole experience uncomfortable. It's a bummer because we go to the Luna Mexican Kitchen Campbelllocation all the time and the people there are always so friendly and welcoming. We've never had a bad experience over there. Because of this, we probably won't come back to this location. read more

We've to this place before with my friends. The atmosphere and the location is very fun and exciting. The food is really good. The only thing is the way is pretty long. Especially if you were to come on the weekend it will be an hour or more wait. read more
