I also tried their habenero sauce on the side which was firey good. Knowing it's a bit far from home. I duped my order and ordered a wet carnitas burrito as well for dinner that evening. I came here for Cinco de Mayo and got the Surf and Turf burrito, a potato Taco and the Pineapple drink. You get to pick and choose your ingredients and they are very generous about how much the put inside your burritos. Everything tasted freshly cooked and they had 4 kinds of hot sauce at the table to enhance the flavors. I was very happy with my food. I appreciate that someone came to check up on us while we were eating. El Jefe is a small joint that would probably fit less than 20 people. I got the Surf and Turf burrito. It was all right. It was a little on the wet side and could have used a little better balance of ingredients so that it wasn't so soupy. It got the job done. It was steak, it was shrimp, checked those boxes. I got the hottest hot sauce they had and it could have been hotter. Also, it was over $20 for the burrito after tax and a modest tip. I know things are getting more expensive these days, but that was maybe $3 higher than I was expecting. Parking is a little tough. They have a private lot, but at lunchtime it fills up pretty fast. I might try another one of their burritos that isn't a Surf and Turf just to give them another try. Long Beach has a lot of great burrito options. This place used to be called The Boss Burritos and has been on my queue for a while. I ordered three breakfast burritos and they had two sizes... small (which is actually the regular tortilla size you typically see) and large (if you are absolutely hungry because "WOA"). When you order a burrito you order the "base" and then you can add what you want from a plethora of options. Kind of like Chipotle but WAY better. The service is fantastic to boot! Our boss treated us to lunch and said this place was really good! We ordered food here but took it back to our office to eat. Came here on a Saturday around 10am no wait to order. Plenty of seating one tv. Sauces on tables. And canned and bottle drinks. No restroom from what I saw small parking lot. Ordered the small breakfast burrito it was good and eggs made there and then. The small al pastor burrito was good too. Got the Boss Burrito with Asada. Once the protein has finished cooking, you will let them know what you want to accompany your burrito. I chose beans, guacamole, cheese, pico de gallo and cilantro. Guy on the phone was friendly, communication was clear. I ordered a chorizo breakfast burrito and asked what comes in it--he said beans and rice. Cool. I asked for no rice. Figured it'd be chorizo, eggs, beans, maybe some salsa. I also added guacamole just to mix it up. Pulled up right as they were wrapping my burrito--perfect timing. Place looked clean, kitchen looked clean, staff was friendly. Took a few bites... flavor was decent, but then I started noticing stuff that threw me off. There was shredded lettuce in it (not a fan at all), then corn, and I think sour cream too. Basically ended up being one of those loaded "everything in it" burritos, which isn't what I asked for. There was a line... but it went smoothly... even a police officer was getting food! Inside it was airy and even though it's small it felt more spacious than before. Nicely painted. Cafeteria style. You can see all the fresh ingredients to choose from right in front of you. Cooks preparing meats cooked to order. I ordered customized chicken nachos and it was hooked up just as any other time I've ordered. Food is great. Vibes are great. Owner/workers are great. The eggs are made fresh to order, so there can be a bit of a wait if there's a line--but it's definitely worth it. Everything tastes great, and the salsas are a highlight. I am very disappointed, I read the reviews and thought I was coming to get good tacos and a deal after I also spoke with someone over the phone and they told me they had $1 taco Tuesday. This place is delicious! The location is small and in a busy plaza. They have a pretty unique layout opposed to other Mexican places. They have a line where you choose what goes into your burrito. I was not excited about the people hanging out in the parking lot, however, the restaurant was very nice and clean. i was greeted by Esteban S, he answered all my questions and offered tasty suggestions. i really did not know what i wanted. I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to eat at this establishment as often as I do, and you should not pass up the opportunity to do the same. I finally tried it out this week and WOW! It was so delicious. I got the Boss Bean Burrito and it was only $6 bucks! They have a smaller size too for only $5 bucks. I am not so sure what the hype is with this place. First time I ordered from here my burrito was extremely messy and wrapped horribly. The food came cold and the meat was mostly gristle. So a year or more has passed and I thought to try them out again because their ratings seem to be high. Maybe the last time they just had a bad night but no that is not the case at all! I ordered a burrito and flautas. The burritos tortilla was soggy, cold, and mushy as you chewed it. Putting the tortilla on a flat top to brown a bit would help this issue completely. Then the meat was the same horrible quality with mostly gristle. I believe they have so many sauce options just to mask the lack of quality of their ingredients. You don't need all of that crap if your ingredients are of decent quality. I'm not even expecting top notch meat cause I fully understand where I am ordering from. What they charge should give better quality than what they provide. Now the flautas were soggy, cold, mushy, and just all around disgusting and I don't use the word disgusting lightly and feel a little bad writing it but I cannot tell a lie. Disgusting!!! PERIOD!! FULL STOP!!! I ordered chicken and beef and when I tell you I couldn't even tell whether I was eating chicken or beef!!! The only reason I knew is because it was written on the container. I just cannot!!! Then of course you have all that sauce to cover crappy food that is badly prepared and cooked!!! I threw most of the food away and I spent almost 70 dollars. This place is proof that food can completely suck and have good ratings. Just because something is big or portions are huge does not mean the food is good. Size does not mean good quality. Loved it. Super personable people working there. Was my first time, I knew parking could be funky in that area but they do have a small lot in front if you can grab a space. My friend and I both got box size burritos which look extremely massive with the amount of stuff you can get inside of them, but you can totally eat it yourself or share it with someone. It's kind of like a subway build your own burrito once you pick the type of meat you want. Has a very small sitting space with a few tables, but my friend and I literally sat there for about 3 1/2 hours and nobody kicked us out nobody asked us when we were gonna leave even though we are done with our food they just let us sit and chat so it was a great time I'll definitely be back food was 10 out of 10 read more
