I never write reviews but I have to shout out the best tacos in my area (and suddenly there is a LOT of taco spots) but this hidden gem is hands down my favorite. Tuesday morning: holy cwap it is 45 degrees F and 30 degrees cooler than yesterday; workout,coffee, pick up platters for Mom's lunch with her friends and then I did a Yelp current location search by Mom's house in New Hyde Park and found El Manguito Deli. In the Yelp From the Business and Meet the Owner section, Amil wrote: "This is a family business. After working in different areas of the food field, my mother and myself decided to open up a place where anyone from different cultures can come in and enjoy our variety of dishes from vegetarian all the way to great steaks and chicken dishes. I saw a photo of this gorgeous salmon, quinoa and veggie dish and walked in with it on my phone. I loved the aroma of the delicious food as I walked in and saw a bunch of folks enjoying their meals and happy. Walked past the beautiful freshly prepared dishes and asked about the salmon. Got to meet Amil who was just so polite and kind. He said he could definitely make it and it would be 30 minutes. I threw another quarter in the meter, put on some Bocelli and Enya and pushed the seat back. 30 minutes later I had the healthiest, tastiest and probably the best salmon, quinoa and veggie lunch platter( with pico de gallo and lemons) I have ever had. Only $12 for this quality and taste!! I have never tasted quinoa so flavorful and fresh; the salmon was done just right. The cauliflower, broccoli and carrots were spot on. The pico de gallo was chug worthy. Amil said he could make some fish tacos next time as he gave me a menu and asked me to call 30 minutes ahead. The chicken looked divine. The meat dishes looked really appetizing. Everything really!!! Plenty of soda, juice,drink and chip options. Lots of seats inside. Loved the music playing. Loved the packaged cakes and dessert options. El Manguito was spotless. The entire food area was immaculate. Had a great meal, got so much love from Amil and all of his employees and could not wait to tell you all and plan to head back for breakfast soon as they open at 5:30 am. There were a few tables and a counter, a hot buffet showcased the foodsFood at these hole in the wall delis is usually pretty good, but El Manguito fell a bit short. I ordered the special of the day, which was roasted chicken. I got it with rice, mushrooms, and fried yuca. All these items were in the hot buffet, but they werent great. The chicken, rice, and yuca were dry. The mushrooms were OK, but a bit bland. The lime went a long way. I ordered a chicarrone pupusa. Stopped in to get lunch on a hot July afternoon. Ordered two pupusas (revuelto, beans and cheese with bell pepper; and one just cheese). They were delicious. Pupusas, the national dish of El Salvador, are made from corn masa, and stuffed, and these were superb. The service was very friendly, and I was charged two dollars for each. What a bargain! For a deli, el Manguito has a lot to offer on the menu. A lot of it is mostly chicken. They do have beef stew, tilapia fish fry and pork chops but majority chicken ! Empanadas are made with corn dough, so empanadas are dryer. El manguito has a good variety of DIFFERENT natural juices such as maracañon, from my understanding it's a cashew juice. Overall, el manguito is good, from beginning to the end. The person taking my order was very patient, efficient, delivery was just as good, I asked for them to call once they arrive and they did. Just as an example, we walked in on Monday had the beef soup and came back on Wednesday ... 2 days later ... and had the BBQ ribs for me and he had stuffed chayote for him. Wow! We were in from Providence RI on business and looking for a quick lunch that wasn't a chain restaurant. We walked in and were immediately rewarded with some great smelling food. The Young owner behind the counter was friendly and informative...but when I saw the older woman in the back hand making and grilling the papusa's I was sold!
