Well-made Mexican dishes with beautifully balanced flavors in the sauces. The chicharrones and eggs had fattier rather than crunchier pork rinds, fun runny eggs, and too runny beans. The best element was the sauce that was well suited to every other part of the dish. The chilaquiles with carne asada had evenly-coated chips in the chilaquiles. Stopped here on the drive from Phoenix to San Diego, as I was hoping for some good Mexican food being this far south. I was sorely disappointed. The tortilla chips were stale. The salsa was fairly spicy, but lacked other flavor than heat. I got the enchilada and taco combination plate. The taco shell was very hard. The meat in the taco was dry. The cheese enchilada would have been decent had I ordered a narrow quesadilla. There was very little enchilada sauce (Which means to me that it wasn't cooked in the sauce.) and what sauce was there lacked in flavor. The refried beans were okay. Beyond all this, it took what I consider an overly-long time to have lunch. We were seated promptly and got drinks quickly, but it took a really long time for the food to arrive. I purchased food and alcohol TOGO. 4 margaritas were a total of 91$ (Not including FOOD) The food was about a 4/10, do yourselves a favor and go to Maracas or Mariachi Mexican cuisine much better food, service, & alcohol. When we got home the margaritas were not drinkable. They were BITTER, and came out of FIRST STREET MARGARITA MIX. How do you justify 21$ margaritas and you use smart and final mix? YOURE A JOKE. I called multiple times but the restaurant was CLOSED. So I decided to leave the other 3 as they were given to me and wait for the next day. I called again the following day to only be told that they would not be able to do anything about it. I spoke to 2 different managers one of them was a female and then a male that ended up being the OWNERS SON. I explained the situation and asked for a refund of 3 of the margaritas because I had opened one to drink and poured about half into a cup of ice, when I realized they were DISGUSTING. And I told him I wanted the bartender to keep the tip provided to her. I just felt that it was not okay for me to pay for 3 of the margaritas as then were just not consumable, and that I would pay for the one I had opened no problem. He proceeded to tell me that "people do some really shady things to try to get there money back." ! HA! I replied by saying that I had taken every step possible to make sure I was not part of that. And even kept the beverages from the night before to take to them the following day so they would see what I was talking about. And I had my call log screen shot to prove the multiple calls I had made the night before. The back and forth ended up being him trying to give me a 20% discount on my next visit. My mother decided she was going to go over and take the beverages, to only have the OWNERS SON tell her "mire señora ahuevo su hija quiere su dinero para atrás, y YO AHUEVO no se lo rembolsare" Do better, for a restaurant who genuinely try's to say that they are part of the community and do so much for it. Shrimp Stuffed Peppers were good. So with a recommendation from a colleague, we came to order the shrimp stuffed peppers, and they arrived with a bottle of soy sauce--Really Good. We ordered lunch: fried red-snapper and chile rellenos. I felt the fish had been a little over-fried, and the flavor was lacking. The chile rellenos were in need of help, maybe some sauce, but the cheese was a little bland. We had a great time here. The staff was very helpful and attentive. We had the Mexicali tostada (which is a taco salad-have it with black beans), enchiladas con pollo verde and tacos carne asada. BEWARE of this location, I just had the most horrible restaurant experience of a lifetime, hard to believe this place is open for business and only one other time i remember feeling ANGRY leaving a restaurant!!! Service: it took twenty five minutes for someone to take our order and about another 45 minutes for our food to be served. After 20 mins eating time it was An hour and a half experience that should have been half of that! We had to work hard to get the attention of any servers throughout our stay and ended up engaging 4 different people by the time we left. There was a name of one server on our ticket but i don't know why because no one seemed to be acting like they knew why we were there. When They finally brought my wife and i a shared fajita platter (after asking TWICE for our food) but NO PLATES so we were made to ASK FOR (and wait for) plates while they were hurriedly walking away - hello!!! Some girl brought ONE plate so i asked for another one and NEVER received - unbelievable!!!! Only 3 of the 4 at our table had silverware so i was made to ASK FOR (and wait again!) for utensils - what the ...? I asked three different people for more chips/salsa during the first hour and never received!!! I reluctantly paid my $100+ bill and left a small tip to be polite even though i don't think anyone deserved my money especially the owners. Food Quality: worst fajitas we've ever encountered. The meat quality was noticeably poor and the plate mostly piled with a gross onions - i dont think there was any other veggies. Between my wife and i we ate about HALF a $20 plate and left the rest for the trash can where it belongs. My friend ordered carne asada and it looked like prison food, i felt so bad that we invited them to come with us. There are SO MANY alternatives for Mexican food in this city that its hard to believe they get EVERY THING wrong and still survive. Please spare yourself and go to Taco Bell!!!! read more

My husband Mike and I came to El Mexicalli on Monroe in Indio per the recommendation of our friends Abby and Rich. They guaranteed it would be worth our drive from La Quinta Resort area. Wow, they were right. I had the fish soup which was over the top!! My husband had some sort of delicious pork dish that was amazing. I'm sorry I cant remember the name but the picture is in the menu! We each had a Cadillac Marguarita, and they were the best we have ever had! Our waiter was Chris and he was extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I heard this place was really good so we gave it a try on a Tuesday night at 5:30. It was super busy, a good sign, but service was very slow. I realize that's par for the course these days so we touched it out. It took about 10 min before someone took our order. Then, after 18 min with no word from the waitress we sought her out to get an estimate on our order. She said it would be soon. It would have been nice if she had checked in with us on her own. After another 11 minutes the food came. It was pretty mundane, not bad at all, but nothing special. Given the really delicious places in the neighborhood I don't think we'll go back. read more

First time there. Food was very good. We went early evening on a Friday and were seated right away. When we left people were waiting outside. Obviously a very popular place. My wife had the Fiatias combination and I had Sopes with chicken and beef.. Great flavor. The shrimp were especially tasty. Only suggestion: they could use more help. We sat in the bar area and our waiter was working furiously to keep up. All in all, a great place.. We plan to go back soon read more
