So my family had been going here for twenty year at least. Last night I ordered five entrees and two appetizers - including guacamole. We asked this - does the guac come with chips and salsa? We just celebrated my husband's birthday this weekend. There were 20 of us in attendance. The staff did an excellent job accommodating us. Our waitress went above and beyond taking orders and serving everyone. She was constantly making sure everyone's drinks were refilled, bringing us extra napkins, etc. when the cake was brought out their singer brought his harp and sang the mayanitas. We went to the El Mexicali Cafe II on a whim. We were staying at the Wyndham Indio for the weekend. Once we got there, we walked in to put our name on the list. There was this nice and humble man who was the security guard. He made our visit very pleasant and enjoyed our food. That we came back the next night for dinner. Mexicali Cafe has adapted to the virus quite well. they now have about 18 tables situated outside of the main dining room and have very attentive service for the tables. We consider Mexicali Cafe II to have the best "authentic " Mexican food in the area. the food is not Tex Mex nor Cali Mex; rather it is similar to a good Baja restaurant. The menu is VERY extensive and the selections run from appetizing starters to postres at the conclusion of the meal. The wait staff have worked there for years and their friendliness is obvious from entering.. Drinks are large and the Pina Coladas are super. Like flan? This is real Mexican flan! Soooooo my husband and I are going on strike from this restaurant. I try to add a lil' humor to my reviews, but not this one. Uh-huh. We got here for happy hour (this past Wednesday) and were seated at a booth. Now there's only two things we expect to make it a decent experience: ~Have our order taken within 5-10 minutes of being seated ~Bring our drinks and ask the husband if he wants a refill (he's a soda addict) Welp, that wasn't happening this particular evening. Arrive here at 5:35pm and yes, we were seated quickly. Our drink order was taken and I order a watermelon margarita w/a tajin rim and the husband orders a Long Island and a Dr. Pepper. Drinks come, extremely watered down, but that's okay with me because I usually only take 1 drink and I'll nurse that all night long if it's too strong. My husband's drink is filled 3/4 of the way and he isn't too happy about it. My margarita looks completely different than the last time I ordered it (was there this past Saturday with the family) and no tajin or salt on the rim. Okay, not a big deal. We start off with apps and aren't sure if we're going to share a plate of food or not. We order some shrimp chile gueritos and nachos. About 30 minutes later, we're still waiting. Not happy. When we see our food items being brought out by the manager, he brings them to the table BEHIND us and who had just taken their seats about 5 minutes prior. Our waitress comes up and has a confused look on her face and points out to him that those items should have been delivered to our table. The husband is not happy and ready to leave. Ugh! The manager, having nearly set down our nachos at the other table- but not quite- then drops them by at our table. He doesn't say a word to us and scolds the waitress in Spanish, for not telling him the correct table. Strange. Our waitress isn't attending to the table behind us, it's someone else. Now here's what I can't stand: 1. As a manager, I uphold you to a higher standard because that's the position you're in. If you can't apologize, why should your employees? Even if you're embarrassed, you should acknowledge the mistake. That didn't happen here. 2. Don't scold employees in front of me. I don't wanna hear that noise. Save it for the back of the kitchen where it belongs. It doesn't do anything for me or fix the situation, and all it really does is demean your employee and make you look like an inadequate leader. Don't do that. So by the time we leave the restaurant, it's 1 hour and 15 minutes later and all we had were drinks and apps and had to rush them to get our check. On another note, the table behind us was complaining all night long that they wanted happy hour prices even though it was approaching 7pm (happy hour ends at 6pm). They refused to order anything before 6pm because they were waiting for members of their party and each time the waitress came over to them, they kept making her reassure them that they'd get the discounted prices and yes, she agreed to it. On one hand, I feel bad for the waitress. You're stuck between a rock and a hard place, I get it. I have to deal with clients like that and you have to walk that tight rope of not being rude or a push-over. The problem with acquiescing to that request is, where does it end? Can the entire restaurant do this? When my husband and I lift our self-imposed ban on this place, can we go and demand happy hour prices at 11am or 9pm? Fix the service, train your staff a bit better, and make sure that the manager is a leader and communicates with the patrons and maybe even apologize if something goes wrong. Gasp! read more

I visited El Mexicali Cafe 2 on Tuesday for lunch. This place is more of a sit down restaurant than the type of taco shop I have been looking for. I would give them a solid 3.5 stars, heading towards a 4. The building is a nice building in a clean strip mall that is just south of the 10 on Monroe. The restaurant itself is decorated in a cute southwestern motif and is very clean. The staff is very friendly and greets you with a smile. They seem to like working there. The place was pretty full at lunch. I did notice that they had some traditional up scale Mexican recipes, but the menu was certainly Americanized. I went with 2 a la carte tacos at $2.50 each and I decided to do a shredded beef and a carne asada. The carne asada was served on nice fresh tortillas. It was overloaded, so the meat fell out. This was definitely a good sized taco. It was topped with pico de gallo and guacamole. The proportion of toppings to meat was decent. The meat was okay, but not the best. The shredded beef came in a crispy shell and it was under-filled wit meat. The meat tasted very good, but it was over powered by the toppings of lettuce, onion and tomato. Looking around the proper meals looked wonderful and my wife had a lunch special that was pretty good. I am going to put this in my list of sit down Mexican restaurants but it is not a great place to grab a taco. read more

We go often to El Mexicali and are always welcomed with friendly service and excellent food! Our fav is happy hour! Margaritas are strong and the chiles gueritos are deelish! Rosa was a fantastic server, prompt and sweet, full of smiles even when busy with a full section of customers. Food came fast, was well prepared, and nicely plated, tasted out of this world!! Went there on Father's day and we were expecting to wait, but the wait was only 20 minutes. Our waiter was a comedic genius and had us laughing throughout our dinner. The wife and I had a mangonada margarita which was amazing!! Which I would have taken a picture to post, but we drank it so fast!
