The 4 star rating is for Mexican restaurants.I love the ambiance especially in the winter with the big wood burning fire pit in the center.The wood smells really good and takes me back long ago to rural Virginia.I usually get the shrimp enchiladas and they're always tasty.The restaurant is run by a family and all the waitstaff are friendly and do a good job of making you feel at home.I also like to watch people come in and try to figure out who's local,who's Canadian and who's from down the hill.The beer selection is meh but it is a Mexican restaurant.I intend to try the Huevos Rancheros next time because I've heard good things about it.Recommended for families absolutely. read more

After living in Ramona for a year and a half, we finally decided to try this place. From the outside it looks very dated, but when you step inside, the size is overwhelming and there is an amazingly huge fire pit right in the center. The service has gotten to be very poor and very slow. We have come here for years and the service used to be very good (water refills and plenty of chips and salsa) with hot food provided very quickly. We always looked forward to eating here. The last four times we have been here since late October 2016, the wait times for the food have been 30 to 40 minutes or more, the food is warm rather than hot, no one comes by to refill water, and the chips barely cover the bottom of the basket. We had the taco / enchilada combo plates with rice and beans, tasted better than expected. Big fire pit in the middle of the barn like room, but was not cold enough to run, hear that's for cold nights. We stopped here on the way back from Julian and hoped for some excellent Mexican since the reviews seemed to be very good. I must say that the guacamole was the worst we ever experienced. In fact, we sent it back. It was a very pale green, soupy and looked as if it came out of a can or was mixed in a blender. The carnitas was very tender yet oversalted. The rice and beans were typical. The restaurant is large and spacious with very outdated old chinka chanka stuff everywhere. Not the best Mexican in Ramona. But easily the most expensive that I've had. Was told by a couple different people that it was great. I was excited to try it out. As we walked in a satisfied couple was coming out. They told us what they got: 49: asada burrito and fish taco. $12 35: enchilada taco and two rolled tacos. $11 I was rather excited. Hoped to find a new fave here in town. I was sorely disappointed. It felt more American than Mexican. Chips and salsa are essentially my fave food. Theirs weren't bad. Just ok. Chips were really salty. Salsa was very stewed tomato-like. Not bad. Just ok. The rice was dry. The beans were good. The carne asada burrito was TINY!!! It was a small tortilla with fairly dry tiny cubes of asada. And nothing else. I was dumbfounded. The fish taco was good but tasted like it was made with...um...miracle whip. Yeesh. My wife's food wasnt bad. None of it was bad. But it was expensive for ok food. We had a 20% off coupon. Still, with no drinks, two meals and a tip it was $24. And I had no leftovers!!!! Which was probably fine cuz the food wasn't great. Had I to do it all over again I would go a couple blocks over and get the Aidas burrito at La Cocina. FUN place with good home cooking and a really great staff! VERY casual, you probably will see friends and neighbors there at a table near you! The food is fresh, comforting "home cooking"! The atmosphere and the food made me feel like I was back sitting in my grandma's patio with friends or eating with friends in one of those great Mexican casual diners. The Chile Relleno was GREAT. It was served like it should be, simply, with the sauce and not a bunch of distractions on top. You get to enjoy the flavors of the sauce, the chile and the cheese and it is GOOD. The beans taste homemade like they should be and they make their own FLAN there. We of course had to have some and it comes with real whip cream and a cherry on top. We got the carne asada soft taco with guacamole (2 of them!) and they were GOOD. I had a shredded beef tostada and I loved that it tasted like my mom or grandma would make. Nothing was over sauced, over salted, overdone or mushy like you get sometimes. It was all just FRESH, GOOD food that you can tell they make fresh every day. It isn't real spicy for those who just want to taste the food without burning, but they do have hot sauce for those of us that like the heat! The servers are very nice and friendly, and helpful. I have lived in Ramona for 23 years and have been here twice, both times a mistake. I have no clue how this place has the ratings that it does. The first time was ok and my little boy really liked the fire place but the food was ick. Many, many years later I went again and not only was the food awful but the service was worse if that is possible. The older lady the owner (?) saw us standing in the doorway and tossed two menus on a table and yelled " over here". We should have walked out then, but my son (now a man) was hungry. The young lady who served us was sweet but was not a good waitress. The beer was not cold and when I asked for a cold glass was told they don't have them. She actually came back when we were waiting for our check and all the plates sitting on the table asked what our order was???? The food is gross, I am sorry to say this as I live in Ramona but I have zero clue why people like this Taco Bell type mexican place. read more

I love El Mich........it never changes. The firepit is wonderful in winter or crisp fall evenings. The food is great; I especially love the ground beef tostada (super tostada, I think it is $ 6.25) or the ground beef taco which is about $ 2.00. The salsa is delicious and they always serve frozen mugs for the beer; which is icy cold when delivered. The staff is friendly and it is very relaxed. There are lots of menu choices and the prices are great. Their pico is so fresh and just delicious and my husband loves the flautas. No Fajitas here, but they have a type of steak or chicken or shrimp that is sauteed with tomatoes, onions and peppers and served with rice and beans. GREAT times here; we always see people we know.....it is a neighborhood gathering spot that is too much fun, ESPECIALLY when that big fire is crackling! Best Mexican Food in Ramona, Family run, Family friendly, reasonable prices and great food. Many Many menu choices, I eat here frequently and recommend anything with their red sauce. I prefer their enchiladas, chili relleno and beef tacos, Throw in a Bohemia beer and you have gone to Mexican Heaven!!!!! The building is located in Old Ramona in the old Levin Building which was originally a car dealership. The large open area which contains the restaurant is perfect for all the wall decorations, there is a large fire pit located in the center of the restaurant which during cooler evenings is always stoked with oak fire wood that keeps the place nice and toasty warm (but not too hot). Don't miss this place if you are going through Ramona on your way to Julian. The place is huge, don't let the small sign and doors fool you it a A++++++ place to eat.
