I am very unhappy with everything this evening. The service was terrible. She never came back to check in our table. Our drinks were never refilled. The plates are usually hot to the touch. They were not even warm. Now to the food....it was awful. The food was tepid as best. Now getting checked out. The register guy looked annoyed that he had to stop his conversation with a young lady. I had a $10.00 off coupon. He didn't apply my coupon and looked miffed when I said something. He told me, " I don't want to void the credit card transaction". So I'll just give you the $10.00. Listen, if you're advertising birria anything then make sure it's authentic. The consome literally had more of a lard/grease flavor than anything. I'm pretty sure it's because the chose to use pork instead of chuck steak. Cannot taste any of the peppers or onion or garlic or apple cider vinegar or cinnamon or cilantro. Those missing or seemingly not so present ingredients is what makes birria exactly that Birria! Do better folks! I have been coming here for the time I have been living here, a year. I love their food. I get a lot of Chicken fajitas, and they are definitely the best I've had in Kentucky. My husband gets different plates here, and he is very happy they taste real good. The atmosphere here is very nice, and it's a family own business. I have mixed feelings about this El Nopal location. It's located on busy Dixie Highway on the Valley Station end, there is another on the Shively end of Dixie. I came here after the lunch rush after another Mexican restaurant I wanted to try was closed, I took a seat at the bar since it was just myself. It did take some time to get waited on even though it was just me and a few others in the restaurant. I got the Swirl Margarita on special for $7.99 along with 3 of the cheese enchiladas. Chips and salsa are free and are always brought to you first just like any other El Nopal. Chips and Salsa were great. Now for the enchiladas, it didn't seem there was enough cheese in them but, still ate them because I was starving. Every El Nopal is different I know that. It also took awhile to get my check as well. I went to the bathroom before I left and the bathrooms were clean. And I do love the decor, I fancy Day of the Dead stuff. My reason for 3 stars, the service was good but they did take their time getting back to me on things, now the food came out quick like it always does at any other El Nopal. And the location on that part of Dixie you may have a difficult time getting in and out with the traffic but, that's Dixie for you. Place was empty when we arrived, nobody there to greet us or get us a table. When we finally were greeted and led to our table it was Definately a chore for this person. Once we did get a table server was rude and could barely be heard. Food came out fast and was ok. Would not return based on customer service. I've been to a couple El Nopal's in Louisville with success, so while I was in the neighborhood I decided to stop by for dinner. There were three tables with customers so it was not busy at all. We were seated immediately and brought chips and salsa. The first shock of the evening was that you only get 1 free refill on regular drinks (soft drinks, tea, etc) The next one was the price gouging for the quality of food. Fajita quesadilla is $17.50 and fajita nachos $16 My boyfriend and I looked over the menu for a good 5 minutes without anyone greeting us or taking our drink order. My boyfriend had to use the restroom so I said if we are not greeted by the he came back we were leaving. Needless to say I can't comment on the food, drinks or service because we walked out. Gave it 4*. More like 3 1/2, but that's not an option. This place is as nice and as clean of a Mexican restaurant that you will find. The service is also very good. A little bit of a downer is the price. It isn't *expensive*, but it is more expensive than your usual Mexican restaurant. However, the food is really good. Never been to El Nopal before. But I was invited there for my best friend's birthday party on Dixie Highway. Hate driving on Dixie Highway so my neighbor said she would drive. Awesome! I ordered pitcher of mango margarita and it was excellent. Definitely refer that one. For dinner I had the steak and chicken fajitas for two, that way I could take some home for lunch the next day. Poncho, our waiter was great. We had a large party with kids and he had alot of patience. All of our food came out in a timely fashion and it was all correct. Lots of drinks flowing. The servers got together and sang Feliz Cupleanos for my best friends birthday. Then smacked a whip cream pie in her face! Too funny. Everyone had a great time. I will go back. Ordered food for take out order. I got my usual monika plate and my wife got chicken fajitas. The chicken on my plate was hard on the ends and my wifes fajitas had absolutely no seasoning and her chicken was dry and hard as well. This was the el nepol in Shively by the Watterson on dixie hwy. I called to complain and management got very nasty with me and didnt care. Guys dont go the food is horrible. They are not even worth 1 star for a rating. read more

We had a quickly planned family get together, family in from out of town. This location is small, and parking is not great, but the service was outstanding! We were in back room, for seating for large groups, it is tight fit to say the least, the room was being shared with another large group. Our server was great, our food order was served soo quickly, the only drawback on service was a little slow on drink orders, but again we had large group, soo we understood. Ok so I am beginning to think that I would only rate a Mexican place bad if they didn't have cheese dip. LOL. OR possibly a long wait and being dirty, other than that I am always happy with Mexican food. I eat a lot of Mexican food. I like the more authentic stuff, but I also dig a chimichanga covered in cheese dip. El Nopal did not disappoint. The food was very delicious. Our dish came with guacamole as a side, and that was forgot, so I had to ask for that, but our server was very accommodating for everything I requested (extra napkins, side of sour cream, and the missing guac). They have beer specials before 6 miller,coors light and jumbo margaritas are $4.99. The traditional chips and salsa are brought out when you're seated. We were promptly asked for our drink orders. We only waited 15 minutes for our food. My husband had pollo poncho which included rice, grilled vegetables, chicken, crab, all covered with queso. Seafood was good chicken was dry. I ordered the combination 20 meal which includes chile rellano tostada and a beer taco, this is very similar to other Mexican restaurants. My daughter had the el nopal chicken which is rice, grilled chicken, and queso with a side of tortillas, this was also very similar to Mexican restaurants. My son had a beef soft taco with rice and beans, this is also similar to other Mexican restaurants. Unlike many other restaurants, they have Big Red on fountain. This restaurant serves many items that are served in a traditional Mexican restaurant but at a higher price point. The restaurant is spacious, the establishment is clean, and the atmosphere okay, but the food tends to all taste the same regardless of what you order. Some of the seats in the booths are showing wear, and some of the wait staff needs additional training. The only reason I have restaurant two stars was because the waiters were ok. First of all, when you walk into a Mexican restaurant you don't expect to hear country music blaring like it's Texas Roadhouse. The fajitas were very under seasoned. Cute place but miscommunication always seems to happen when we dine here. Sweet servers but they can't get the order right 70% of the time and the vegetarian menu (even the lunch) is way over priced for the joke of a meal that you get. $8.95 for a pile of onions and lettuce rolled in a tortilla at 12pm is kind of ridiculous.
