I have mixed feelings about this El Nopal location. It's located on busy Dixie Highway on the Valley Station end, there is another on the Shively end of Dixie. I came here after the lunch rush after another Mexican restaurant I wanted to try was closed, I took a seat at the bar since it was just myself. It did take some time to get waited on even though it was just me and a few others in the restaurant. I got the Swirl Margarita on special for $7.99 along with 3 of the cheese enchiladas. Chips and salsa are free and are always brought to you first just like any other El Nopal. Chips and Salsa were great. Now for the enchiladas, it didn't seem there was enough cheese in them but, still ate them because I was starving. Every El Nopal is different I know that. It also took awhile to get my check as well. I went to the bathroom before I left and the bathrooms were clean. And I do love the decor, I fancy Day of the Dead stuff. My reason for 3 stars, the service was good but they did take their time getting back to me on things, now the food came out quick like it always does at any other El Nopal. And the location on that part of Dixie you may have a difficult time getting in and out with the traffic but, that's Dixie for you. Also plan on going when it's not busy if you want good parking.

Pretty empty given today is a holiday. Food was hot, but lacking in taste. Kind of bland, beans were very very thin consistency. Dark lighting but was brighten up by the natural sunlight coming in.

The food was amazing, but our server wasn't friendly from the time we sat down, until we left. He was very short with us and we never said or did anything to him. We used to order to-go from this location all the time, but this was our first time dining in.

The parking lot was packed but no wait for our party of two. We got a waiter that failed to get or order correct. Never came back to refill Drinks. He failed to check on us at all. Just wasn't a very good visit. I live for weekends to eat with the hubby. This location let me down I will not return.

While this place can be hit or miss, my recent visit was a hit. Disclaimer- I love all Mexican food. Actually, my 9 year old son and I are obsessed with it. We've had Tex Mex, authentic, and have hit almost every place in town. You can't go wrong with El Nopal. Cheap and predictable! Chips and salsa are delicious. The chicken soup is amazing! Hot from jalapeños so be careful if you don't like spice. Kids meal provides a generous serving size! Arrive early for dinner for faster service!

    This burrito is humongous.

Gave it 4*. More like 3 1/2, but that's not an option. This place is as nice and as clean of a Mexican restaurant that you will find. The service is also very good. A little bit of a downer is the price. It isn't *expensive*, but it is more expensive than your usual Mexican restaurant. However, the food is really good. It won't blow your doors off, but you'll enjoy it. The bar is nice. Haven't sat there. But it looks nice. Overall - pretty good.

Steak/chicken fajitas for two. Comes with rice and beans, lettuce, pico, guacamole, and sour cream to top.

Never been to El Nopal before. But I was invited there for my best friend's birthday party on Dixie Highway. Hate driving on Dixie Highway so my neighbor said she would drive. Awesome! I ordered pitcher of mango margarita and it was excellent. Definitely refer that one. For dinner I had the steak and chicken fajitas for two, that way I could take some home for lunch the next day. Poncho, our waiter was great. We had a large party with kids and he had alot of patience. All of our food came out in a timely fashion and it was all correct. Lots of drinks flowing. The servers got together and sang Feliz Cupleanos for my best friends birthday. Then smacked a whip cream pie in her face! Too funny. Everyone had a great time. I will go back. Never been to any of the El Nopal before but worth it. Great time. Great food. Many choices. Pancho even helped some of us decide the best options. Dixie Hwy location rocks! Right off the highway. Hope all the El Nopals are as good and fun loving as this one!

We had a quickly planned family get together, family in from out of town. This location is small, and parking is not great, but the service was outstanding! We were in back room, for seating for large groups, it is tight fit to say the least, the room was being shared with another large group. Our server was great, our food order was served soo quickly, the only drawback on service was a little slow on drink orders, but again we had large group, soo we understood. Food was plentiful, and was introduced to their soup, which was excellent.

Yum....this dish was enough to feed 2 people with leftovers. It had chicken, shrimp, steak, pork, and chorizo.

Ok so I am beginning to think that I would only rate a Mexican place bad if they didn't have cheese dip. LOL. OR possibly a long wait and being dirty, other than that I am always happy with Mexican food. I eat a lot of Mexican food. I like the more authentic stuff, but I also dig a chimichanga covered in cheese dip. El Nopal did not disappoint. The food was very delicious. Our dish came with guacamole as a side, and that was forgot, so I had to ask for that, but our server was very accommodating for everything I requested (extra napkins, side of sour cream, and the missing guac). The restaurant is decorated nice, new interior, and clean.

I had been wanting to go for quite some time to try the Birria because I heard it is so amazing, and it really lived up to the Hype! Oh, did I mention they have the viral soft serve margaritas!?!?! I got the strawberry, it was so pretty, excellent presentation and absolutely delicious! I will say it was more like a dessert to me and I would have preferred to have it after my meal instead if before but that's just me. We got there between 6:30 and 7:00 and it was really busy, luckily our friends got there first and grabbed a table. They had already had a round of drinks while waiting on us but it took a while for anyone to come over to greet us or refill their drinks but again it was busy and everyone was helping everyone. We ended up splitting the birria platter and still had plenty of food to take home which we just ate last night as leftovers and were still absolutely fire!! I think the egg roll and quesadillas were my favorite over the tacos bc I love the melty cheese. I also ordered a small side of queso which was surprisingly a little spicy which I really enjoyed. They even surprised us when my BIL ordered a small margarita and it came out in a fish glass (see photo). It was so unexpected but also so cute at the same time ... it's really the little things like this that bring joy, okay? LOL This place was absolutely amazing and I can't wait to try it again.

When we arrived we had a brief wait before we checked in, and were seated on the second level. Our server was excellent, our service was quick and he was always around without hovering. It was bitter cold outside so instead of my usual margarita ($14+) I opted for a beer ($6). We started with the salsa trio, one of my favorites with handmade assorted chips. It includes three salsas, somewhat spicy, sweet tomato and tomatillo - the spicy and sweet were my favorites. Next we ordered the tacos el carbon and carbon burrito - pricing is expensive! We both ordered our steaks medium rare. My tacos had a beautiful presentation, the meat came out on a skewer and smoking from the hot coals. All toppings were repeated on the plate. The steak was overcooked and tough though. Had a nice smoke to it, but very chewy. My husband enjoyed his burrito but wasn't the best he's ever had. They also had a mariachi band walk around but they had "tips" all over their instruments and clothes. Overall we had a nice meal but the price point doesn't equal the food quality.

We were leaving for the second leg of our trip and were running late, as usual. We decided to run across the street for a sit down lunch, what's another hour? Two smiling faces greeted us at the door. They offered a high top but my hip was absolutely not digging it nor a table up the flight of steep stairs. Once seated, we were greeted promptly and had water in front of us almost immediately. We each ordered soup and then a sandwich to share. I had the Sopa de Pollo . A hot bowl thick with thin noodles and lots of chunks of chicken. The chunks were too big to eat without being cut up which was a challenge in a bowl of broth. It was so hot that I had to wait a while to try it and even then had to blow on it. It was delicious. Unless the soup is your meal, order a cup. I still took nearly a pint of soup back with me. My husband ordered the Frijole Negro - a huge bowl of black beans that was served with a large pile of raw onions on top. Like the chicken soup, it was burn your mouth hot and a very large serving. He said it was good but he'd not order it again. Moving on to the sandwich. We had the Cubano. I'm not even going to describe it - just trust me - order the Cubano. Do not look at the rest of the menu - order the Cubano. Don't even bother looking at the ingredients, just order the Cubano. Have you ordered it yet? Do it already. The Cubano is huge. We split one half and had the other when we arrived at our next stop. Do consider that we had soup first; otherwise, we'd have eaten the whole thing. The accompanying plantain chips were worthy of their own review. They were wonderful. Who knows if and when we'll be back to Louisville but when we are, La Bodeguita will be the first place we stop. BTW, have you ordered the Cubano yet? What are you waiting for? Put your phone done and order it! Enjoy!!
