The theme of the restaurant is so cool. It's like you're on a big ship. They have fresh fish in a boat near the kitchen. The service was great, very attentive. The drinks were delicious. I ordered a maracuya margarita and asked them to make it spicy with jalapeños. He asked how spicy and I said very spicy! It was so delicious and spicy! I ordered the shrimp ceviche. It didn't have much flavor. I added lots of lime and hot sauce. My friend's food was also bland. He ordered some salmon dish. The waiter was great. Excellent service, attentive. They took our group pictures. They surprised our friend with a song & dessert. The bathrooms are really interesting & fun. The food was a little pricey for being bland. I was really expecting it to be good. It was a Friday night and the restaurant was mostly empty. There was a playground right next to where we sat. Not a great view. Don't waste your money on food. Had Jesus as our waiter and he is fantastic!!! Service here is always superb! Had a birthday celebration. Normally they bring a cupcake and sparkler presentation, but I ordered a cake from the bakery (Tere Cazola) from across the highway. Turned out perfect!!!! If you ever happen to be in Playa Del Carmen Mexico I would highly recommend visiting this roadside restaurant. It is on the way to the dolphin encounters. We wanted to cleanse our palates from the $hitty meal at Mi Pueblo the night before, so we hit El Oasis that was recommended by our driver. EO specializes in mariscos, and is frequented primarily by locals. We started w/ the calamares fritos (110 pesos @ 17.75 exch rate), and ceviche de camarones y pulpo (120). First of all, the calamares were OK. I thought they were a bit too uniform for the eye: 3 Stars. On the other hand, the seafood in the ceviche was super fresh, and it was topped w/ guac like it should be: 4 Stars. For our entrees, I had the pulpo panka (180 | braised octopus), while my rellies had paella (160), filete relleno (175), and steamed filete (180 | the latter 3 not pictured). My rellies all liked their entrees, esp the one who ordered the paella. I had a bite and the shrimp were big and fresh: 4 Stars. Likewise, when my pulpo finally arrived, it was tender and went well w/ the tortillas: 4 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, its aire libre (open air) and they have good music playing in the background. In addition, there are a lot of whimsical nuances inc a white shark in front that you can take pics with: 4 Stars. In contrast, the service was a bit mixed. The waiter was a nice guy, but when I asked him for English menus for my rellies, they did not arrive. I had to ask the hostess. Additionally, my ceviche came w/ the other entrees, and my entree came much later. Thirdly, the waiter offered bread & tortillas, but they arrived after my rellies had been eating their entrees a while. Lastly, I asked the hostess to call a taxi. However, it wasn't until the Mgr, Roger asked me if we needed a taxi did I notice a sense of urgency: 5 Stars for Roger, 3 Stars for the waiter, and 2 Stars for the hostess and kitchen. Despite the mixed service, I would return in a heartbeat. The food is very good, and its outside the touristy area so locals come here. When traveling, its always best to go where the locals go. read more

Truly well done .. this must be my 7th visit here .. today i had the Boquinete the whole fish in al mojo de ajo and i asked for some ajillo sauce on the side .. eveything came in perfect texture and taste .. served with a dish of vegetables and rice .. the sauces were exquisite .. the fish cooked "a la plancha" and to perfection.. I was pleasantly surprised as I have been ordering the sea food Ceviches and other less sophisticated dishes during my previous visits .. Also, I have been noticing service has come a long way here .. the last 3 times waiters went out of their way to make sure all is fine at my table .. You Must Come Here! We just found it by Yelp. Only locals.. but very inviting and the people are simply the absolute BEST. Roger was so helpful and welcoming. The food was so fresh it was almost still swimming. They start you with seafood broth. It is free and piping Hot. It was the best thing I have Ever Tasted! I had to have a whole bowl of it. But that was a bad Idea because I couldn't finish my Grilled Octopus/ Pulpo. The Pulpo was too Die for. You can get it with different sauces. There are too many to list. But I wanted to taste it. It was delicious. My husdand had the Grilled Grouper it was moist and the grilled veggies were amazing. They served it with mashed potatoes and those I could have eaten 4 lbs. My friend had the Coconut Shrimp and there was about 8 or more served in a Coconut half. This place just has all the seafood you could want. If we had time we would all go back. After reading the favorable reviews on Yelp, I visited El Oasis with a big group of friends during our stay in Playa del Carmen. The food and service were both phenomenal. We loved the interior AND the exterior of the restaurant, which has very cute, authentic vibe. Caribbean Fish Fillet dish was one of the best dishes I've had during our trip. Coming from the coast of California and as an avid fisherwoman, I can say that this seafood is top-notch! We did the mixed ceviche (mixto ceviche) and the portion was extremely generous. Could've been our whole meal. Super fresh. Next we had the seafood special paella and it was great. We each had caipiroska and you cannot skip these! A spin on the caipirnha but with vodka. This was my favorite restaurant, so far, in playa del Carmen. The atmosphere was festive, the wait staff spoke "just enough" English, but were patient while I practiced my Spanish. The Marlin taco appetizer, and main course paella, were excellent. When I asked them what the local drink "horchata" was they brought me a small glass to taste. I could eat there every day. Shocked by the good reviews. #1- they brought us chips and mayonnaise, tamarind and habanero. We tried it, thought it was gross. When we asked for salsa or pick de gallo they said it would be extra which we said is fine, and they never brought it. Tacos were mediocre. Staff was rude. read more

Nastiest place I've ever eaten ate. As a matter of fact, it was so nasty I couldn't even finish my food. The "fresh oysters" had a swamp taste, if you are into that, then this place is for you. So first, I cannot fathom coming to Mexico and ordering a hamburger or a Caesar salad, but you do you. The food and service at El Oasis were terrific, with Mari and Ulysses answering our questions and making sure we wanted for nothing. The tamarind with chipotle salsa served with the totopos is addictive. A little sweet and smoky with a small amount of heat, it could be my new favorite thing. I had a shrimp and jicama tostada that was much larger than I expected. The base was a slice of jicama and the shrimp were breaded and fried. It is dribbled with a spicy sauce. Overall it was very good. I also ordered the paella and brought most of it home, very delicious and filled with tender octopus, calimari, shrimp, fish and shrimp. They showed a smaller option in the menu, but we were told they do not do that now. Hubby had the grilled octopi and loved every bite! It was served with rice and veg. One friend had the paella as well and the other had the shrimp in three cheese sauce. He said the shrimp was great, but the sauce was more of a cream sauce than cheese. It also came with rice and veg. Glam for dessert was excellent and rich. The dessert tray is a work of art! We will definitely be going back before we go home. read more

Wow, this place outdid itself. It was a rainy Saturday & we had scoped out the place online already, checked out the menu, figured out how to get there, etc. We got there pretty early for Mexican time but they were open & ready for us. We were the only ones there besides about a dozen staff. Our waiter was very attentive & the food was incredible. My husband had a beer (or 2) & I had a very tasty lemonade & then ordered apps. I had the medium shrimp cocktail (that was huge & full of this sweet & savory cocktail sauce & a ton of juicy shrimp. My husband ordered 3 marlin tacos (thinking they'd be like San Diego street tacos) & they were huge with just marlin cooked in something delicious. For lunch, I had a marlin taco & carb taco & they bring out these 3 sauces; one habanero & not too spicy, one like a Mexican tarter sauce, & this other smokey one. So with each bite, I had a choice. Ben ordered the Pulpo Chamuscado which was this lovely octopus just missing the head blackened with some savory sauce that enhanced the tenderness of the octopus. It was served with this potato dish that was au gratin in flavor. This place is pretty funky with decor & thatched roof, all kinds of beachy decor including a really cook restroom with rust ship's doors & these sinks where the faucet is a real conch shell. I have no idea why the great ratings for this restaurant. We should have left as soon as we saw how many items were on the menu. Too many items on a menu almost always assures mediocrity. Another indication was the woman working for the restaurant scamming photos. She walked table to table asking if she could take a photo for the restaurant and then tried to sell them back to diners. I found some of the seafood in my paella to be fresh but not all. Some had that overly fishy taste which overpowered the paella. The bass fillet was fresh and good, so I help my wife finish that. She was less thrilled because she was told it would be flaky but it was more of a softer Caribbean fish. That should be expected of warmer water fish. The fillet is served with Peruvian rice which is also good. The vegetables were bland. The restaurant is not a great value and we could not finish our food even though we were hungry. For value and quality comparison, at approximately $25 US more, we had a white table cloth style, homemade past and fresh sea food dinner at Cenacolo Playa. Cenacolo is both top end for experience and food. read more
